Search for Down-Type Fourth Generation Quarks with the ATLAS Detector in Events with One Lepton and Hadronically Decaying W Bosons

Physical Review Letters, 2012

This paper presents a search for the t-channel exchange of an R-parity violating scalar top quark (t) in the e ± µ ∓ continuum using 2.1 fb −1 of data collected by the ATLAS detector in √ s = 7 TeV pp collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. Data are found to be consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model backgrounds. Limits on R-parity-violating couplings at 95% C.L. are calculated as a function of the scalar top mass (mt). The upper limits on the production cross section for pp → eµX, through the t-channel exchange of a scalar top quark, ranges from 170 fb for mt = 95 GeV to 30 fb for mt = 1000 GeV.

Measurement of W-Boson Polarization in Top-Quark Decay in pp[over ¯] Collisions at sqrt[s]=1.96 TeV

Physical Review Letters, 2010

This paper presents measurements of the polarization of W bosons in top quark decays, derived from tt events with missing transverse momentum, one charged lepton and at least four jets, or two charged leptons and at least two jets. Data from pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV were collected with the ATLAS experiment at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 1.04 fb −1 . The measured fractions of longitudinally, left-and right-handed polarization are F 0 = 0.67 ± 0.07, F L = 0.32 ± 0.04 and F R = 0.01 ± 0.05, in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. As the polarization of the W bosons in top quark decays is sensitive to the W tb vertex Lorentz structure and couplings, the measurements were used to set limits on anomalous contributions to the W tb couplings.

Measurement of Wγ and Zγ production in proton-proton collisions at TeV with the ATLAS detector

2011

Abstract We present studies of W and Z bosons with associated high energy photons produced in pp collisions at TeV. The analysis uses 35 pb− 1 of data collected by the ATLAS experiment in 2010. The event selection requires W and Z bosons decaying into high p T leptons (electrons or muons) and a photon with ET> 15 GeV separated from the lepton (s) by a distance∆ R (l, γ)> 0.7 in η-ϕ space. A total of 95 (97) pp→ e±νγ+ X (pp→ μ±νγ+ X) and 25 (23) pp→ e+ e− γ+ X (pp→ μ+ μ− γ+ X) event candidates are selected.

Measurement of ZZ production in pp collisions at $ \sqrt{s}=7 $ TeV and limits on anomalous ZZZ and ZZγ couplings with the ATLAS detector

Journal of High Energy Physics, 2013

A measurement of the ZZ production cross section in proton-proton collisions at √ s = 7 TeV using data recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider is presented. In a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4.6 fb −1 collected in 2011, events are selected that are consistent either with two Z bosons decaying to electrons or muons or with one Z boson decaying to electrons or muons and a second Z boson decaying to neutrinos. The ZZ ( * ) → + − + − and ZZ → + − νν cross sections are measured in restricted phase-space regions. These results are then used to derive the total cross section for ZZ events produced with both Z bosons in the mass range 66 to 116 GeV, σ tot ZZ = 6.7 ± 0.7 (stat.) +0.4 −0.3 (syst.) ± 0.3 (lumi.) pb, which is consistent with the Standard Model prediction of 5.89 +0.22 −0.18 pb calculated at next-to-leading order in QCD. The normalized differential cross sections in bins of various kinematic variables are presented. Finally, the differential event yield as a function of the transverse momentum of the leading Z boson is used to set limits on anomalous neutral triple gauge boson couplings in ZZ production.
