Literary Cinematic Tourism: New clues of the Brazilian Literature influences on Film Tourism development in Brazil

PASOS. Revista de Turismo y Patrimonio Cultural

The relationship between cinema and literature is permanent from film’s beginnings, with film adaptations stealing fire from great works. This paper analyses the relationship between film and tourism, focusing on the role of Brazilian literature’s influences in this context. Storytelling as a tool and the relevance of “travel with a purpose” are additional subjects discussed in relation to this type of tourism. This is an exploratory study that uses textual analysis (word clouds and similarity analysis). The textual corpus is formed by the synopsis of films based on Brazilian literature (n=25). The results show new clues for the understanding of a promising market niche in audiovisual tourism in Brazil: Literary Film Tourism (LCT in Brazilian).

Global Perspectives on Literary Tourism and film-induced tourism - Book review by Graham Busby

Her&mus: Heritage and Museology, 2023

What a welcome volume, bringing together contributions from a number of countries, addressing the concepts of literary and film-induced tourism. It is only in the last ten to fifteen years that there has been a significant increase in the number of pertinent publications (Arcos-Pumarola et al., 2020); therefore, this edited collection is timely. For any reviewer, the challenge is to describe and discuss the content given a small word limit. The approach adopted is to consider this collection with recollection of the twenty plus journal articles or book chapters personally published since 2000. Not surprisingly, with sixteen chapters in this book, some are reviewed in more detail than others.

The potential of literature in creating tourist experiences in Portugal (Atena Editora)

The potential of literature in creating tourist experiences in Portugal (Atena Editora), 2022

Tourist destinations tend to bet more and more on niche products that attract visitors who want to live a unique, enriching and differentiating experience. Art, culture and literature are intrinsic elements of each destination, with the potential to be explored, either independently, or in conjunction with other endogenous products, such as gastronomy or wine. In any case, learning and immersion in the local culture are at the base of the motivations of the visitors who seek them out. In Portugal, several regions bet on the uniqueness of their endogenous products, allied to literature, organizing itineraries, events or festivals. The house-museums of a particular author, the literary hotels, the cafes that evoke memories of literary gatherings are stages for these initiatives. This article explores the relationship between tourism and literature, based on the assumption that both the work and the life of a writer can serve as a basis for the creation of itineraries and literary places capable of enhancing tourism in the places where they will be developed, promoting an intercultural experience and the perpetuation of the memory of works and authors. Combining literature with endogenous products, such as gastronomy or wines, is another potential explored in Portugal, in the sense of providing a differentiating, sustainable experience that stimulates the senses of its visitors, which will be addressed in this article.

LITERARY TOURISM: FOLLOW IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF YOUR FAVOURITE AUTHORS

Literary tourism is a type of cultural tourism that deals with places related to the lives and the works of writers. Starting from a corpus analysis, this dissertation shall illustrate the manipulative techniques of the language employed in literary tourism websites. In the first part of this paper, some brief theoretical information will be given, since literary tourism has a quite long history and has already been studied by a large number of scholars. In the second part, a small corpus of texts collected from websites about this topic shall be examined. Firstly, the method used for this research will be described and secondly, the results will be presented. The third and last part of this work, then, concerns the analysis of two pictures and of a particular extract taken from one of the texts used for the corpus. Finally, the conclusion will explain the choice of the title given to this paper and will summarize the most common techniques used by tourism stakeholders in order to lure possible tourists into buying what they offer .

Narration and placement of tourist spaces in Spanish fiction cinema (1951-1977)

Revista Latina de Comunicación Social, 70, 2015

Abstract The importance of the tourism industry in Spain is unquestionable. Long before the emergence of the so-called film commissions, the use of the audiovisual industry, and in particular of cinema, as an instrument for the promotion of tourist destinations was noticeable. Based on this premise, the objective of this research study is to analyse the placement of tourist space as a product placed in the narrative and dramatic structure of the tourism-themed films produced during the life of the Spanish Ministry of Information and Tourism (1951-1977). This study, therefore, focuses on the analysis of the audiovisual narrative. The results show how the representation of the tourist space is materialised in tourist views, is associated to certain intangible values, sometimes by contrast to other spaces, and can produce a digression from the story or can be fully integrated in its dramatic structure. Keywords Cinema; tourism promotion; audiovisual narrative; product placement.

Textworlds in interplay: The rhetoric of film induced tourism

2017

The main goal of this paper is to examine how Lyme Regis, a coastal town in the South of England is portrayed in the film The French Lieutenant’s Woman, directed by Karel Reizs (1981), based on the novel by the same name by John Fowles, and how this dramatic and breathtaking depiction contributes to the marketing of the image of the location as a tourist destination (Beeton, 2005). The reason underlying the selection of the film, unlike other films researched by studies on film-induced tourism (e.g. Carvalho, Vieira & Sousa, 2013, 2014; Sousa & Carvalho, 2016; Sousa & Marinho, 2014), owes to the fact that it is a fictional story set in Lyme Regis focusing on character and plot rather than on location. Yet, as will be shown, the film succeeds in giving viewers an appealing image of the town through a combination of language and symbols, both verbal and non-verbal (visual), as well as affect combined with cognitive triggering (Buckland, 2003 [2000]). It is thus a second goal of this p...
