Multi ethnic approach as the Social capital in promoting Heritage conservation in Semarang city”, (towards “A Heroic heritage conservation”)

Semarang as a heritage city can use a Multi ethnic approach in promoting its Heritage sites. That means we can deconstruct the old colonial concept of Divide et Impera that ever been manifest in city-planning of Semarang olden times. By using the Indonesian Nation motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika means Unity in diversity we can manage the heritage movement in Semarang in such a way. Either the rising heritage awareness in Kotalama (the Dutch area), we can trigger many other heritage movements on many other historical sites such on Kauman, Kanjengan, Pekojan, Kampoeng Melayu etc. We can Involve the youth and the Next-generation as what they have done many events at Kotalama. There we can arrange many up-to-date events that welcome young generation to come, as the complement of those Old heritages traditional festivals perform there. That movement can be another trigger to a bigger movement in promoting Indonesian traditional Moderate Islam festivals that the entire world can see what we do...

Strategies for Revitalisation of Semarang Heritage Area: a Stakeholders Perspective

The old City of Semarang as a heritage area has a significant historical value. Since Independence Day of Indonesia, that area has been abandoned and unoccupied without maintenance. Lack of activity makes the heritage area become a dead city and broad to some issues, environmental, buildings defects, social and institutional governance. The revitalisation activities of cultural heritage in some countries are unique to the technical, socio-economic and cultural aspects. Often the parties could not be generalised due to issues of the authorities, financial capabilities, readiness of stakeholders, and the complexity of its heritage buildings. In one of the SEAMEO-SPAFA assembly (Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Project of Archeology and Fine Arts), it is said that managing cultural resources is just like managing a common economical venture.It has to start with a clear concept. Without it, we cannot explain the scope of the work. Without proper process and technique, we cannot define the steps to reach a quality objective. Resource that lacks quality cannot be developed. From a living city to a World Heritage City: authorised heritage conservation and development and its impact on the local community

The excessive spread of tourism in urban neighborhoods and centers has led to a situation that is known as overtourism. The role of local communities in the development of excessive tourism has long been perceived as important. Locals in smaller destinations, in particular, have felt the effect of increasing tourism which they have been forced to deal with pressure with the disruption from the influx of tourists. Therefore, the aim of the study is to explain the impact of overtourism on the local community in heritage city. The objectives of this research are; i. To determine the changes of local community' self-efficacy from the impacts of overtourism, ii. To evaluate the impact of overtourism towards the local community. This research is conducted at Bandar Hilir, Melaka by using quantitative descriptive analysis technique. Findings show that most of the respondents agreed that overtourism give a high level of comfort and satisfaction to them. With that, this study proposes viable information for stakeholders in heritage city to ensure the proper tourism planning and management, especially towards the local community.

Community Participatory for Sustaining Heritage Environments: Case Study Mansoura City

Mansoura City is the capital of Dakahlia Governorate in Egypt with more than 900,000 residents. As Mansoura city is expanding, many of the rural areas around the city have been urbanized in the last ten years or so. This differentiation of mix-mode or urbanrural flavor gave the city a wide range of community experiences. Up till the sixties, a number of foreigners (mainly Greeks, Italians, and Lebanese, among other nationalities) lived in the city and worked in many professions mostly connected with trade. Therefore Mansoura is a city of contrasts but famous for its architectural style ranged from traditional areas and buildings on one hand and new part that was planned in the late 19 th century which is characterized by western buildings and luxurious villas with every modern convenience on the other hand.

Community Participation in Heritage Tourism for Gresik Resilience

Preservation act of the heritage area in Gresik is still in draft, and many heritage objects are yet formally legalised. This situation affect to the decrease of heritage objects from 500 units to 125 units for the last 20 years. The heritage area that situated in urban area has many values while their advantage are not yet maximalised in urban development process. This article is part of Gresik preservation concept research which aiming in building criterion for preservation concepts by grounding up perception and values that lies in the community either who lives in an urban heritage area of Gresik, Kampung Kemasan, and the remote community who are connected to Kampung Kemasan but may not live there in present. Preservation concept that build from the locals may describe the community participation level to preserve a city's heritage area and lead them into a heritage tourism through any capacity. This capacity represent the city's resilience through tourism. The resiliency aspect are then examined through social capacity that exist in Kampung Kemasan community related to heritage tourism. This article are using qualitative approach in building factors that affected the heritage tourism through the social capacity indicators. Focus groups discussions and in-depth interviews were held as a method to ground up perception, and a set of trancript data are analysed through content analysis method. The finding reveals some factors related to social capacity description which consists of local community daily activities that mostly situated in or near the Kampung Kemasan and also their commitment to held any annual activities that seen as a potencial aspect to involve the locals in urban heritage management; the existence of a social capital through space and time they have managed together to discuss things about their settlements; the existence of Nyi Ageng Pinatih and Nyi Ageng Arem-Arem's tomb (the former figures of Kampung Kemasan) as a focus of attraction for religious visit; and the aesthetic and originality factors of every building in Kampung Kemasan that tells many stories about the histories of Kampung Kemasan.

The municipality of Semarang as the capital of Central Java has been established since 1547 AD. Therefore, it has many historical heritages. Heritage has even existed since the Hindu Buddhist period. The legacy of the colonial period in Semarang is also abundant. One of the monumental is the old city area of Semarang. This historical legacy has a strategic meaning in strengthening people's identities. However, there are always problems found in preserving historical heritage in the city of Semarang. One of the issues that is often encountered is environmental problems. At some point, environmental problems are found, such as tidal flood, slum environment, to vandalism. This problem is an obstacle in preserving historical heritage in Semarang.

A Spatial Dialogue of Heritage Village Between Kauman in Semarang and Seochon in Seoul Toward Preservation Development

Semarang is one of big cities in Indonesia contains of multy ethnics. They traditionally settled down inside a group of villages. Kauman is the cultural heritage of Muslim settlement in Semarang. The peculiarity of local Muslims in Java’s coastline and the strong social cohesion colour the people’s daily life. Seochon in Seoul is a historic area and is the home for more than 670 hanoks. In 2008, Seoul Metropolitan Government issued a conservation plan and recruited a team of architects and academics to observe and investigate Seochon’s condition and discover the possibilities of conservation there. The urban village is a settlement that was established in the early period of the formation city and is the embryo of Semarang. Melayu Village is a heritage area where the existing heritage assets is inseparable from the history of the past. The enviromental of Melayu Village is quality conditions suffered environmental degradation because the threat of catastrophic tidal flood, the level of residential density is high, and there are several old buildings that were damaged.
