Modernization of Public Libraries in India: The Importance of ICT Applications

The concept of library and librarianship has undergone several changes incorporating the growing requirements of the society all over the world. The public library as a local gateway to knowledge should facilitate lifelong learning, independent decision-making and cultural development of the individual and social groups. The advantages of these ICT applications to the libraries are immense and visible in terms of automation of library in-house operations, increased number of digital resources. The paper described various issues and challenges faced by the public libraries in modernizing their collection and services to users. The status of ICT applications in public libraries is discussed highlighting the areas of modernization, mentioning the possible solutions. At the end it is suggested to provide a consortium based network for public libraries also to strengthen their collection and services.

PRESENT SITUATION OF ICT ENABLED MODERNIZED SERVICES IN THE COLLEGE LIBRARIES UNDER WEST BENGAL STATE UNIVERSITY

In general, a college library is regarded as an institution of higher learning, which usually offers a three years or a four years course after school leading to a bachelor’s degree. Beside the traditional services library renders new services like automated circulation, web-OPAC and use of e-resources 24 hours from home, e-CAS facility etc to make library services updated with the new era and to satisfy the ever growing need of the users today. In general staff of any library is divided into four types: Professional, Semi – professional, non – professional and Technical staff. Among the 42 govt. and govt. aided general degree colleges 16 colleges are surveyed from which 15 colleges responded to the survey. Among the colleges responded to our survey there are 3 Govt. Degree colleges and 12 govt. aided general degree colleges. This study is done through the survey method and a questionnaire was given to each college. The data collected from the survey are analyzed and concluded through the results and recommendations for future scope of research in this area.

APPLICATION OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY (IT) IN CENTENNIAL PUBLIC LIBRARIES IN VIDARBHA REGION

Public libraries in India are facing challenges in coping with the changing environment in Library and Information Science field. Even Centennial public libraries whom have crossed more than 100 years of their age are also struggling for the same. Considering the importance of IT applications in public libraries, this paper examines the status of IT applications in centennial public libraries in Vidarbha region in Maharashtra. It also tries to substantiate the possible reasons behind the development gap in IT applications at these public libraries. In conclusion, the importance of IT applications and suggestions on its application are included.

The Scenario of Library and Information Science (LIS) in India - Past, Present and Future perspectives

Paradigm shift in Resources, Services and Products: A case study of Maulana Azad Library System, AMU Aligarh

Maulana Azad Library is the Central Library of the Aligarh Muslim University which caters to the educational, research and extension needs of the University. The Library holds invaluable collection of books and journals in almost all the disciplines of study. It is world famous for manuscripts and rare books in Oriental Languages and ranked the largest library system of India and second largest in Asia with over 110 satellite libraries. The Information Technology (IT) played a vital role in the advancement of each and every segment of our society. Now a days, libraries are capable of and trying to accomplish the new IT based services to fulfil the information needs of the patrons in more enhanced and speedy manner. This paper is aimed to highlight the developments and modernization activities of Maulana Azad Library system of AMU. It elaborates as how with the use and impact of IT, the huge traditional library system has swiftly turned into a modern and advanced library system in a short span of time and there is a paradigm shift in its resources, services and products. The study also talks about social networking tools, currently used for engaging directly with the people/patrons.

Conventional to Modern Libraries: Changing Practices and Changing Roles of Information Professionals in the PG Colleges of University of Kerala, India

Librarians diffusely feel their role absolutely altered by the advent of the Internet and electronic resources posing tremendous challenges to libraries and their professionals. The key purpose of this research study is to find out the role of information professionals in managing modernized libraries in the PG colleges under University of Kerala, India. The data was collected through structured questionnaire as well as observation and personal interviews. More particularly, questionnaires were distributed among 118 librarians of post graduate colleges under University of Kerala. But only 103 (87.28%) of them responded.

A Review of Library Services with the introduction of ICT in Libraries

The advent of Information & Communication Technology has affected all spheres oflife. As information technology is becoming the important part of every organization, it is bringing great changes in the organization"s structure and management and delivery practices. ICT have transformed Library & Information services globally. This paper explores the various library services in which ICT plays an important role. The study endeavors to identify various components of ICT being used in libraries and information centers to enhance the library services. The paper highlights changing dimensions of library services and challenges libraries have to face in the implementation of ICT.
