Mobile computing devices facilitate mobility and face-to-face interaction when compared with desktop computing, but lacks of the computing power of the latter. Therefore, a key aspect to ensure success of a learning supporting mobile application is whether mobility is really needed for the activity it supports and if mobile devices do really represent an added value compared with the same application implemented on non-mobile devices. In this work we first analyze the best known collaborative learning practices trying to find out which are the real need for mobility and faceto-face interaction and then design and develop an application called MC-Supporter implementing a, problem-based, collaborative learning application based on these requirements.
Work in progress — Support for mobile Collaborative Learning applications

This work is intended to describe a framework aimed to address the challenges in the development of mobile Collaborative Learning applications. Firstly, the paper offers an overview of some of the main principles of Collaborative Learning that will be the basis of the framework, which is based on three main pillars: collaboration and communication among students; context-awareness (gathering users' data, such as geolocation, movements, academic information, and history) to provide personalize information and services; and interoperability with e-learning as many organizations use them. Evaluation will be conducted with a group of students of a "Professional Expert Course on Mobile Programming" that will use the framework to build their applications.

In an educational context, technological applications and their supporting infrastructures have been evolved in a way that the use of learning objects is no longer limited to a personal computer, but has been extended to a number of mobile devices (PDA, phone, Smartphone, and Tablet PC). Such evolution leads to the creation of a technological model called m-learning that offers great benefits to education. This educational model has been developed over the recent years, which resulted in several research projects and some commercial products. This paper describes the (re)use of an adapted platform from an API of MLE (Mobile Learning Engine), to create tests, quizzes, forums, SMS, audio, video, mobile learning objects, in combination with a learning platform in a particular setting. MLE (Mobile Learning Engine) is a special m-learning application for mobile phones (a J2ME application) that can access a LMS (Learning Management System) and use most of its activities and resources, and add new, even innovative, activities. With J2ME one can store, use content and learn without the need of further network access and even use interactive questions that can be directly solved on mobile devices.

With deployment of modern technologies, interest of people have diverted from Computer-Supported learning to mobile-supported learning. Mobile learning is greatly demanded in educational organizations to demonstrate the pedagogical activities. Some of MCL supportive frameworks and applications have been introduced in numerous fields to advance the activities of those organizations but they require more succinct standard to sustain collaboration successfully. This paper introduces the new marking and heuristic evaluation method that provides educational support and gives entire picture for developing new educational group application for MCL. The features of application support asynchronous and synchronous collaboration. To authenticate various features of application, usability testing is conducted that helps to find the feedback of users. Further, application aims to improve learning impact and educate people at anytime and anywhere.
Designing a Mobile-app-based Collaborative Learning System

An important aspect of education is to promote higher-order thinking skills to learners. However, in the lecture environment, learners are passively engaged and it is unlikely for higher-order thinking to occur. Although interventions such as "clickers" can be used to increase engagement in lectures, this does not necessarily promote higher-order thinking. Approaches such as collaborative learning are better suited for this but there is little room to use such methods in the short time frame of a lecture.

The use of handheld computers in educational contexts has increased considerably in recent years and their value as a teaching tool has been confirmed by many positive experiences, particular within collaborative learning systems (MCSCL). The cost of the devices has hindered widespread use in schools, however, and cell phones have emerged as an attractive alternative. To test the functionality of cell phones as a platform for collaborative educational activities, the authors adapted an existing PDA application for use on cell phones equipped with Wi-Fi. This article examines the problems of developing applications for this alternative technology and reports on a usability analysis of a collaborative classroom activity for teaching physics. The results confirm the viability of the cell phone platform, with due account taken of the device's processing, network and interface limitations. With an appropriate design, users quickly master the technology, though a certain decline in efficiency relative to PDAs was observed.
mCLT: an application for collaborative learning on a mobile telephone

Mobile technologies offer new opportunities for distance learning and enable people to collaborate anywhere. This paper introduces an innovative mobile platform for computer-supported collaborative learning in which traditional methodologies of collaboration have been improved, based on 3rd-generation mobile telephones. Students can collect and share live data immediately, anywhere and at any time. This enables them to play an active role in the knowledge-building process. The mCLT is potentially an application for ubiquitous collaborative learning.

Literature points out new perspectives for collaborative learning through the use of mobile devices.
