Student career path recommendation in engineering stream based on three-dimensional model

In the current scenario, students remain in dilemma to choose right career path in their lives. Many students have chosen their career path without receiving proper guidance from suitable professionals or services. This can potentially cause mismatch among personality, interest, and skill of students. Relative to this context, this paper proposes a comprehensive student-centric recommendation system based on research analytics framework for choosing best career path. More specifically, this system utilizes the multiple measurements from three-dimensional model, that is, preference, fuzzy logic, and influence. By integrating these measurements with the relative weighted set generated using Analysis Hierarchical Process (AHP) decision system, a desire score of student related to each career oriented engineering stream is computed. The results of user based evaluation demonstrates that our proposed approach generates more satisfactory career based path recommendations as compared to other baseline methods.

Examination of Career Expectations of First-Year Students in the Faculty of Engineering

In this research, it is aimed to examine the opinions of the first year students studying at the Faculty of Engineering about their career expectations. For this purpose, the phenomenological model, which is one of the qualitative research methods, is used. As a result of the literature review on the subject, 5 interview questions related to the career expectation of 15 1st year students studying at the Faculty of Engineering were prepared and data were obtained through the interview technique with these students. Content analysis method was used to analyze the data collected through faceto-face interviews. The findings obtained as a result of the analysis, ''Career development process theme'', ''The theme of factors affecting career decision'', ''Skills theme'', ''Desired life theme'', ''The theme of obstacles in the career line'' categorized as. As a result, the opinions of the interviewed students about career planning are mostly in the form of pre-planning and taking action. While students' individual goals and environmental impact are important in terms of factors that determine the future; According to the students' opinions in the professional process, personal and technical issues were seen as qualifications that should be improved. The findings of the research were discussed within the framework of the literature and related studies, and suggestions were presented regarding the results.
This research focuses on different aspects of engineering graduates' career planning decisions as an important activity for their business and empowers continuous curriculum improvements to integrate academic programs outcomes and technical skills that conforms Iraqi job and employing requirements. Data is collected according to questionnaire conducted for majority of " Production Engineering and Metallurgy department disciplines at the University of Technology " graduates' as a case study that may be used later in human resources planning. Bar graphs are used as a statistical tool to display and analyze the results for three generations of grandaunts (80s, 90s, and above 2000s). Results revealed that despite private recruitment have been raised in Iraq at the last decade; governmental sector is still the main target for graduates employment through the three decades covered in this study. Also, results declare that leading role is dominated by male engineers for almost two out of the three decades covered in this research. The results also showed graduate's tendency to additional sciences and practical skills beside general and basic engineering sciences that are already available in their academic program. Internet is generally their major resource of consultations for the engineers' followed by other resources (academic professors, and books).
A career is an individual's journey through learning, work, & other aspects of life. Oxford English Dictionary define, "Career is a person's course or progress throughout life, more clearly an individual's life, learning & work". In professional concept, career is described, as an occupation or a profession that usually involves special training or formal education & is considered as a person's life in working environment. Today, we talk a lot about career, career education, career opportunities & career guidance. Post economic liberalization created globalization and privatization, has taken a very prominent role in today society. Privatization in Education popularized the doctrine of professional education and vocational education and we have 70% of school passing youth, who are joining professional education. There are 3 million young man & woman are graduating from professional education institutions every year in our country. The only objective of these graduates is to become successful in their future career. Therefore, career consciousness has become a very indispensable concept for them as well as their parents. Since parents are investing huge in giving quality professional education to their wards, their involvement in the career choice of their children is justified. However, a recent study conducted by a reputed NGO reveals that only 47% of the graduates are getting employment, which does not mean that others are not eligible/interested. More over, 23% of freshers change their company in first year itself. Only 12% complete 2 years in a company. There are many reasons for these problems.

Believing that any student, if given the right kind of inspiration, motivation, training and exposure, will certainly be able to realize his/her potential, the Career Vision Approach program is an integrated and comprehensive program across first year orientation for all incoming undergraduate students of engineering, with an emphasis on student success, learning and earliest introduction into career. First year students are in many ways the most vulnerable group in our institute. Through orientation, peer mentoring and transition, the program is aimed at supporting new students to become successful university learners, prepared to achieve their personal and career goals. This paper focuses on answering two questions: first, „why consider strategic approaches to the first year in Engineering education?‟ and second, „how can we be more strategic about supporting the first year experience‟?
A Review of Knowledge Management Based Career Exploration System in Engineering Education

Knowledge sharing has become an important tool in every organization's success story today. Various knowledge management applications has been carried out recently in many sector like health care, university, banking, construction etc. and it has brought significant improvements. However minimal research is done on career development and as such Knowledge management in career exploration in Engineering Education has not been carried out till date. In India, most of the curriculum and pedagogy does not suit with the real time job environment and this caused many graduates to remain unemployed every year. To meet the gap, this paper attempts to highlight the works on the various existing career exploration and knowledge management techniques. The author collected relevant literature from 2010 to 2015 with the objective to find out a way to combine the two disciplines of career exploration and knowledge management to enhance the career awareness and career exploration system with the application of knowledge management techniques. From the study, the researcher found four conclusions: (i). Education and work/career are separated into different world; (ii). Career exploration enhances student's career awareness; (iii). Knowledge management technique adds efficiency and enhances curriculum; (iv). The research efforts in knowledge management (KM) and career exploration are sparse and no such literatures are available on knowledge management in career exploration currently. This research may add to the development of an efficient knowledge management based career exploration system for engineering education.
Career Planning and Progression for Engineering Management Graduates: An Exploratory Study
When faced with the decision of selecting an advanced degree, many engineers opt for management related studies rather than further specialization in a technical field. This article attempts to highlight the reasons behind such choices, and explores the role that a Master’s degree in Engineering Management (MEM) plays in career planning and progression. A survey of 58 MEM graduates, who completed their studies at a prominent university in Lebanon between 1992 and 2009, reveals that the majority of the respondents follow a linear career path, rapidly paving the way towards managerial positions. For most of the respondents, earning a graduate degree in engineering management played a primary role in, or at least contributed to, making this shift. The article concludes with a diagram sketching the possible career paths for MEM graduates. By showing the number of years spent at different career stages, the diagram serves as a career-planning tool for MEM graduates, engineers, managers, and researchers.
