The Management of Green Areas in the Urban Environment
2011
In the simple meaning of green areas nature is expected to carry out many functions in an urban context, which are useful to explain the descriptive characters needed for the analysis and comprehension of specific phenomena. Besides being a significant component of the urban scene, vegetation is also one of the most appreciated: generally speaking, vegetation is synonymous with quality. The structural pattern of green areas, which apparently occupies uneven spaces among buildings, regulates in fact the planning order of the fabric of the city, as an organic system, in which its matrix organises and shows the social mechanisms of the city itself. Starting from a general scheme, the research has to discover the criteria which determined the structure of the environmental and “naturalistic” scene of a specific site, considering the various elements which can illustrate the cognitive context of the territory itself. The comprehension of the site characteristics and the trends of certain...
Czasopismo Techniczne. Architektura, 2014
The article discusses changes to planning and designing of urban landscape, in particular, green areas and public parks, seen as component of the composition of a city, public space as well as important element of urban landscape and spatial order. It also focuses on a function performed by a landscape architect in these investments. The article includes references to concepts and ideas born in the last fifty years, including Urban Ecology, New Urbanism, Green Urbanism, Landscape Urbanism and green infrastructure. Factors important for the composition, designing, perception of nature and areas shaped by the greenery were also analysed. These days, the concept of planning urban greenery system is construed as a combination of requirements resulting from planning-related issues and pursuit of improvement in terms of quality of place and life.
The role of the landscape elements to improve the urban spaces environmental performance
ACE: Architecture, City and Environment, 2018
This paper aims to the review the existing literature on some important features of urban green spaces such as the components, functions, services, community involvement, initiatives and actions from an ecosystem perspective. The analysis begins from the assumption that urban green spaces are ecosystems of vital importance in enhancing the quality of life in an urban environment and supplying ecosystem services such as biodiversity and climate regulation. Thus, the urban green space is an important component of an ecosystem in any community development. Meeting the needs of users is related with the functions and services that urban green spaces provide to communities. Community involvement, engagement and development require mechanisms to ensure meeting the needs and aspirations of local users in the community. The methods employed in this analysis are the literature and documents review, and analysis of existing data on uses and users. As conclusions, the paper suggests environmental, economic and social initiatives for local authorities and communities that can be applied to all represented and involved stakeholders.
1 Modelling Nature in Ecologically Oriented Urban Context
2018
Although every model implies simplification, it also indicates the most vital elements of a given structure to follow, which is the basic assumption of the present article. Modelling could also be understood as the shaping of an existing natural object. The question remains how this could be implemented in harmony with nature. Greenery makes human-ordered space clearer and more complete. When formed after the aesthetic norms of the related architecture, the greenery usually acquires geometrical shapes. However, when natural systems are followed closely, the structures thus obtained with their free form and ecological values emphasised, are able to improve our living conditions. The present work attempts to prove that even if we try to be in keeping with nature only in form, both the aesthetic and the ecologic aims are possible to achieve. The quality of designed greenery cannot be ignored, considering the need to preserve nature in our neighbourhood, and to provide the maximal biolo...
Environmental planning and management of urban natural landscapes
2016
Advantages of urbanization such as access to clean water, health, and overall easier life in cities, as well as the disadvantages or its negative effects on environment cannot be ignored. Today, there are numerous environmental problems due to the reduction in ecologically valuable places within urban areas. Bringing nature to the cities appears to be essential to enhance urban environment and to reduce environmental problems in urban communities. In fact, issues resulting from the idea of "sustainability" as a policy-making goal require an integrated environmental policy-making approach. The innovations of new environmental policy-making require policy-making mechanisms that can deal with interdependent characteristics of environmental problems. To this end, new structures have emerged known as Environmental Planning and Management and Strategic Environmental planning and management. This analytical – descriptive article aims to re-examine the origins and concepts related...
Social and ecological issues in the urban open spaces regeneration
There are many abandoned green areas in urban contexts and this aspect deprives the city of a resource that, if treated, would lead to benefits so as to improve the aesthetics, the attractiveness and, above all, the livability of each district. Having a neighborhood that has green spaces created depending on the needs and desires of the citizens, is to have a collection of many territorial portions that are able to meet the demands of the citizens to achieve an improvement in the quality of life, as well as in the perception that each inhabitant has of the urban and social context in which he lives. This work deals with the requalification of three areas with poor ecosystem-environmental quality located in Maddaloni, Campania. The requalification intervention allows not only to serve three nearby structures with specific functions, but above all to create open spaces where activities could be carried out, which have caught more and more the interest of the citizens. These activities are related mainly to the care of the environment and the city's green areas, but also to the necessity to involve the citizens in the decision process for transparency and active sharing. A space that the citizens have helped to create is a space that they will consequently have a strong desire to live and care for.
The Contributions of Urban Landscape to Urban Life
The issues of urban and urbanization emerged after the industrial revolution. Thus, cities that have increased rapidly in population have become points of attraction for people. Over the past century, the world population has begun to gather quickly in urban areas. Cities are transforming into unhealthy living environments with distorted ecological balance, lost green areas and aesthetic qualities. The value of accessible green spaces in urban areas is increasing to the unprecedented levels. The green space system seen as a necessity in the cities have provided the emergence of the "urban landscape" phenomenon. The issue of urban landscape is now a very serious concept. The landscape change is moving along with the level of civilization. Primarily, guidance service should be offered for more efficient, comfortable and protective areas. An interdisciplinary approach is needed in the creation of urban spaces. In this study, the term of urban landscape was explained and the researches about the contributions of urban landscape to urban life were examined and suggestions were made about the subject.
Ecological Approach as an Urban Solution for Sensitive Areas
IOP Conference Series: Earth and Environmental Science
The urban spaces of river banks are sensitive areas, not only in environmental terms but also considering the spatial planning rules. Often the spatial planning rules are focused on building and urban development questions rather than of ecological approaches. In this sense, this article aims to present an urban design project for a sensitive territory of river banks having as pivotal concern ecological solutions. This proposal is due to the requirement of linking the landscape features of river water fronts with the characteristics of the urban fabric. The case study area is the Train Station surroundings in São Pedro do Sul, a city in the central region of Portugal very well-known because of its thermal baths. It was proposed to the university team, on behalf of the Urban Planning Unit of the Master Degree in Architecture at the University of Beira Interior, by the Municipal authority. The students were organized in groups in order to propose the urban design projects, ensuring the continuity of the urban fabric with the Vouga river. The best projects won prizes (1 st , 2 nd and two honour awards) offered by the city hall. This fact was an extra motivation for students along to the design process in an academic environment comprising an international background (including Portugal, Greece, Brazil, Slovakia, Lithuania and Poland). Regarding the presented solution, the conclusions show that the main strategy was to preserve and to enhance the ecological identity of the place, possible given the agreement in between university and municipal authority, working together.
Environment and urban sustainability
