SOCIAL MEDIA SPACE PRESENCE: A REVIEW OF NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES ON SOCIAL MEDIA SPACE
Social media is used across a variety of organizations including Higher Education Institutions. This study examined the use of social media by universities in Nigeria. A review of websites from selected Nigerian universities was conducted using the National University Commission website. A table was generated indicating the various social media available in the sampled institutions, their status, number of likes, population of the institution and total number of likes for all social media. This analysis found that low levels of social media usage by Nigerian universities and students. Recommendations are made on how Nigerian universities can improve their use of social media space.
Assessment of the Relationship between Southern Nigerian Universities and Students on Facebook

This study set out to assess Nigerian universities and students' relationship in the social media age using Facebook Page posts as a means to measure. This study was motivated by the fact that there have been series of protests and demonstrations in the universities in the southern, Nigeria. Three research questions were posed to guide the study. Using the content analysis, data were collected using the coding sheet as the instrument. The purposive sampling method was used to select one university each from the three zones that make up southern, Nigeria. Data were presented in table and mathematical forms. The results show that students comment on the Facebook Page posts of the universities. The study equally found out that the interaction between the students and the university management was poor. Universities used Facebook Page for promotional reasons. It was recommended that the public relations unit every university should post messages that can cause discussion through which the management would know the students' needs and address them early enough.

This study analyzed the utilization of social media platforms and university students' attitudes towards academic activities in Cross River State. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. The population of this study comprised all the private and public university students in Cross River State. A sample of 1,600 students, which cuts across the three universities in the area of study, was selected using the convenience sampling technique. A questionnaire (r=.849) and a rating scale (r=.786) were used as the instruments for data collection. Findings emerged amongst others that the utilization status of social media platforms by university students is generally high; the utilization of Facebook, WhatsApp, Instagram, Twitter, WeChat, Skype, Snapchat, Eskimi, Telegram and YouTube social media platforms has a significant composite influence (F=52.453, p<.05) on university students' attitudes towards academic activities. Over the last decade, the number of people using social media has grown throughout the world, and it's more important than ever to understand how it affects students' academic achievements. Therefore, the aim of this study is to identify why students use social media platforms as well as to examine the impact on students' perormance. In order to meet the study objectives, the data is collected via an online questionnaire distributed in the electronic form to a sample of students attending tertiary institutions in Dutse. The mixed method research design has been applied in the present study. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) is used to analyze the quantitative data. On the other hand, the content analysis technique has been adopted to analyse qualitative data. According to the findings of the survey, the majority of students at tertiary institutions utilized social media platforms such as Facebook, WhatsApp, and Twitter, among others, and spent unnecessarily high time on them, drawing attention away from their study time. Results also indicates that higher institution students' use of social media platforms has a negative impact. The paper concludes that tertiary institutions should encourage students to use social media for academic research and assignments and that institutions should create ways to encourage students to use social media for academic purposes rather than for other purposes that interfere with their studies.

Official use of Social Network Sites by African Universities

The use of social network sites (SNS) has become very valuable to educational institutions. Some universities have formally integrated these social media in their educational systems and are using them to improve their service delivery. The main aim of this study was to establish whether African universities have embraced this emerging technology by having official presence on SNS. A purposive sampling method was used to study 24 universities from which data were obtained by visiting their official websites and following the official links to the most common SNS. The study found that 42% of the universities were officially present on the four most popular SNS (Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube). 17% of the universities have completely no official presence on any of the major SNS. The results also show that whereas some universities have made attempts to actively participate in the social media, some have very low participation level. While some official materials are popular, others do not attract attention of this audience. The fundamental contribution of this study is that it points out that whilst most researches have concentrated on the personal use of the social media, there is need to understand other dimensions of official usage of SNS.
SOCIAL MEDIA: USAGE AND INFLUENCE ON UNDERGRADUATE STUDIES IN NIGERIAN UNIVERSITIES

This study examined social media usage among undergraduates vis-Ă -vis its influence on their studies. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. The population for the study comprised all undergraduate students of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife Nigeria. Five faculties were randomly selected, from which 850 students were selected using random and convenience sampling techniques. A self-designed instrument titled "Social Media Usage and Influence Questionnaire (SMUI-Q)" was used for data collection. The results show social media platforms used by undergraduates, include WhatsApp (97%), Facebook (85%), Instagram (65%), YouTube (62%), Twitter (25%), LinkedIn (21%), Google Plus (15%), Snapchat (10%), and Skype (7%). Further, undergraduates spend an average of 2-3 hours daily on social media, and their perceived purposes of social media usage include: socialisation (83%), information (74%), academic (73%), business (68%), and entertainment (61%). The results highlight Internet addiction (45%), distraction (32%), antisocial behaviour (6%), cyber bullying (4%), and writing and spelling skills deficiency (24%) as the influences of social media on undergraduate studies. The study concludes that the social media platforms mostly used are WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube; which are used mainly for socialisation, information, and academic purposes and may also perhaps suggest the reason for addiction to social media.
The Impact of Social Media on the Academic Performance of University Students in Nigeria
The article works is on impact of social media on the Academic performance of University students in Nigeria. Causal-comparative research design was adopted. The Four tertiary institutions used for study- Nnamdi Azikiwe University-Awka, Delta State University, Abraka, Madonna University Okija campus and Anambra State University. Population of this study comprised of all the students in various departments in each schools. The total population selected through purposive sampling technique are twenty- five students in each school and the total therefore are hundred undergraduates and. Capture sampling is the method used to administer the instrument. Findings show that social media usage among students is not for academic purposes. Found out that the following are often used by students -Facebook 40(40.81%), WhatsApp 20(20.40%) 2go/Skype 14(14.28%) and while Myspace, Twitter, badoo, Blogs/web scholars, Google+/ Social bookmarking are not often used by undergraduates in the four universities for the study. Another finding showed that students in the four universities use social media for reaching out to close/distance friends and general information about life. University age students widely engaged in using Social Media. Therefore, the social media is poised to affecting both their personal and academic lives. Thus, this study is designed to assess the relationship between the use of social media and academic performances, and it impact on the students of sociology/anthropology in university of Nigeria Nsukka. As quantitative approach was adapted to collect the relevant data of study, a number of 120 survey questionnaires were administered among the undergraduates in the Department of Sociology/Anthropology University of Nigeria Nsukka. Out of the three research hypotheses formulated to guide this study, the analysis invalidates the first two hypotheses while validating the last hypothesis. Thus, the students' academic performance is independent of their use of social media (p=0.808); the students' academic performance is also independent of the amount of time they spent on the internet (social media) (p=0.227) and the degree of use of social media by the students is positively related with their ages (p=0.000). The study therefore recommends that the university authority should educate the students on the need to use social media to enhance their academic performance.
