STUDENTS' PERCEPTION OF COUNSELLORS' ROLE IN THEIR CAREER CHOICE IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY, ABUJA, NIGERIA (original) (raw)
This study investigated students' perception of counselor's role in their career choice in secondary schools in Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. The design used was descriptive survey. Sample size of 378 students was used in the study. Questionnaires was the instrument used for data collection. Mean score, standard deviation and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation were used for data analysis. The study revealed that Students' perceptions include the fact that counselors are central in the process of their making career choices, students want trust and discretion of the counselor in relating to them, and the activities of the counselor should have positive influence on their career direction; to a high extent, the perception of the roles of counsellors in Nigeria is in line with the global practices of counsellors. The challenges militating against guidance and counselling practice in Nigeria includes wrong notion of counselling, assigning other duties to counsellors other than counselling, absence of confidentiality between counsellors and students, and lack of funding to expose counselors to further in-service training. Based on the findings, the recommendations proposed were that counselors need to live up to the expectations of them, earning the confidence and trust of students by being discrete in the discharge of their services, Nigeria needs to ensure that the guidance and counselling department in the schools are provided with the necessary tools that could enhance their work, as well as providing adequate funding needed to make the work easy for the counselors. Also, the counsellors should not be overloaded with other activities apart from counselling so that they can discharge their duties effectively.
