Effectiveness of the “lift the lip” technique for plaque control in 2 to 6 year old children
International Journal of Dental Science and Innovative Research, 2024
Mechanical control can remove plaque using various methods and tools. Lack of visibility in some areas of the oral cavity can lead to a more significant accumulation of dental biofilm. The "lift the lip" technique was initially developed to detect children at high risk of caries development more quickly. The method involves gently moving the child's upper lip upwards using one hand's thumb, thumb, and forefinger so that all the upper front teeth are exposed while brushing the teeth with the other hand. The technique is used successfully in many countries, but its effectiveness has not yet been evaluated among children in Bulgaria. The study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of the lip lift technique for plaque control in children aged 2 to 6 years. The children in the study were randomly divided into two groups of 60 participants - experimental and control. Participants in the experimental group performed a tooth brushing technique combined with the "lift the lip" technique, and the control group followed only the brushing technique instructions. A modified oral hygiene index of Silness and Loe was used to check the oral hygiene status. Silness and Loe plaque index assessment was performed at the initial examination (baseline), after two weeks, and after one month. The results show that the plaque index in the children of the experimental group significantly decreased two weeks after the start and remained at values below 0.5 until the end of the study. When comparing the plaque index values between the two groups, it was found that there was a significant decrease in two weeks and one month after the start of the study in the experimental group. The data give us reason to conclude that the 'lift the lip' technique is effective and is recommended to be used by all parents of young children for quality plaque control.
Recent vs Conventional Methods of Caries Removal: A Comparative in vivo Study in Pediatric Patients
International journal of clinical pediatric dentistry
To compare the three different methods of caries removal, conventional method using Airotor and chemomechanical method using Carisolv and Papacarie. The patients with multiple carious teeth were selected either in the deciduous dentition or mixed dentition. Ninety primary molars were selected from 30 children (10 males and 20 females) between the age group 6 and 9 years. After caries excavation, cavities were evaluated for caries removal or clinical efficacy by the tactile and visual criteria, microbiological efficacy, time taken for the procedure. Patient acceptability toward the treatment was also checked with the help of a visual analog scale (VAS). The observations thus obtained were subjected to statistical analysis using analysis of variance (ANOVA), Mann-Whitney U-test and Kruskal-Wallis test. The clinical efficacy of caries removal was highest with Airotor while the microbiological efficacy of caries removal was almost comparable with Airotor, Carisolv and Papacarie caries r...
Evaluation of Three Different Caries Removal Techniques in Children: A Comparative Clinical Study
Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, 2013
Aim: To evaluate and compare the efficacy of chemo mechanical (carie care) caries removal method with rotary and hand excavation by assessing the amount of time taken, the pain response experienced by the children and the amount of residual caries left out. Study design: Twenty patients between the age groups of 5-7 years were selected and caries removal was done by airotor, hand instruments and cariecare gel. The efficacy, time taken and pain threshold was evaluated during caries removal. Results: significant results were obtained when inter group comparison were made. Conclusion: it was concluded that cariecare was efficient in caries removal and can be used as an alternative for the airotor in management of dental caries especially in children.
The Comparative Evaluation of the Effects of Tongue Cleaning on Existing Plaque Levels in Children
International Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, 2013
The present study compared and evaluated the effects of tongue scraping and tongue brushing on existing plaque levels in children. The investigation was a single blind, stratified comparison of three parallel groups of children who performed either tongue scraping or tongue brushing along with tooth brushing or only tooth brushing twice daily under professional supervision for a 21 day period. Dental plaque was recorded using the plaque index described by Silness and Loe at baseline, on day 10 and on day 21. All data was subjected to statistical analysis using Wilcoxon's Signed Ranks Sum Test and Mann-Whitney U-test. The results of the present study show that the tongue scraping and tongue brushing groups showed statistically significant reductions in plaque levels after 10 days and also after 21 days. It was also noted that both tongue scraping and tongue brushing were equally effective in reducing the plaque load in children.
BMC Oral Health
Background To evaluate an experimental T-shaped toothbrush for plaque removal and gingival health when compared to a conventional toothbrush among children. Methods This single blind parallel randomized controlled trial was conducted on 8–10-year-old healthy schoolchildren with no history of recent antibiotic intake, proximal caries or more than 3 missing teeth per quadrant. A computer-generated randomization list allocated child to the 2 groups. Each child received detailed instructions for tooth brushing. Gingival health and plaque scores were recorded in school at baseline, 2 weeks, 1 month and 3 months in a portable dental chair by an examiner who was blind to the allocated toothbrush. A general feedback on the use of the T-shaped toothbrush was obtained at 3 months. Data was analyzed using two-way repeated measure ANOVA, Generalized estimating equation and Bonferroni test. Results A total of 195 eligible children were invited, 110 parents gave consent and 100 children completed...
Dentists's Preference Of Brushing Technique Taught To Children With Permanent Dentition
SciDoc Publishers, 2021
Oral health is believed to be commonly correlated with systemic health. Brushing daily is a sufficient method to avoid interdental caries and gingivitis. There are a number of techniques that are used for tooth brushing for plaque removal. Various techniques include fones technique, Horizontal scrub. Modified bass, Charter’s method, Stillman’s method, roll’s method.
Clinical Oral Investigations, 2008
The aim of the present study is to verify which strategy is the most effective in the treatment of dental decay of the deciduous dentition in a moderate to high caries child population under remote field conditions. Materials and methods: This study was carried out in the rainforest of Suriname. Three hundred and eighty schoolchildren, mean age 6.1 years (±0.5, range 5.1-7.1 years), were randomly assigned to four different groups: full dental treatment, only extractions, only restorations (ART) and no treatment. Parameters for oral health were defined as caries prevalence, caries incidence, sequela to dental caries, and dental pain. Results: Restorative dental care of the primary dentition, by means of ART, resulted in an increase in dmft. Extensive dental treatment, performing only extractions or no treatment did not render significant changes in the caries prevalence of children. Conclusion: Full dental treatment should be the strategy of choice whenever oral health care programmes are developed. However, when priorities are required due to situational, practical or economical reasons, extraction of severely decayed teeth is an effective treatment strategy.
The Use of Lip Bumper in Lip Sucking Treatment
DENTA
Background: Oral habits include habit which are continuously done and has the potential to cause defects on teeth and perioral tissues.Lip sucking or biting habits are often found simultaneously or as a substitution of finger sucking. This habit may affect the labial and perioral structures. The habit may take several forms. Two extreme types are mild wetting of the lips with the tongue and pulling the lips into the mouth between the teeth. The lip bumper is a functional device that is used successfully to intercept developing dental and occlusal problems by allowing a proper development of the arch length and width for eruption of the permanent teeth.Purpose: This study aimed to re-validate the effectiveness of lip bumper application and habitual therapy in treating the bad habit of lip sucking. Case Report: The mother of a 9-year-old girl reported an upper front teeth protrusion and frequent occurrence of mouth ulcer. Further examination revealed that the patient had a habit of li...
