Students’ Academic Performance and Social Network- The Facebook Experience (original) (raw)

Social Networks in Education.doc

In 2007, the British Council conducted market research into how the Internet has affected the preferred learning styles of young people wanting to learn English around the world. The results of this research suggest that if teachers are to remain relevant and effective, then they need to use 'learning technologies' to help students reach the world outside the classroom. Facebook usage was found to interact with measures of psychological well-being, suggesting that it might provide greater benefits for users experiencing low self-esteem and low life satisfaction. Online interactions may be used to support relationships and keep people in contact, even when life changes move them away from each other. In addition to helping student populations, the use of technology could support a variety of populations, including professional researchers, neighborhood and community members, employees of companies, or others who benefit from maintained ties. The article suggests how teachers could try to use 'learning technologies' in the classroom whenever possible, to make the learning experience relevant to students; show them how to find and access information and opportunities through technology; focus on developing their networking skills (both online and face-to-face) so that students become 'connected' to people who can give them information, help them learn and keep the learning experience relevant to their life, as students with strong social networks perform well academically.

Student use of Facebook for Informal Learning and Peer Support

As the use of Social Networking and Social Media Technologies (SNT) has become pandemic amongst young people (Tess, 2013; Falahah&Rosmala, 2012) there has been an increasing drive amongst educatorsand researchers to explore the ways in which SNT may be utilized within the classroom (Junco, 2012). Whilst there is therefore an increasing amount of literature available in relation to the use of SNT within the classroom it does not appear that there has been sufficient research considering the manner in which SNT results in the development of a complex, invisible and organic social network amongst students. When these networks exist outside of the classroom they may allow informal learning and peer support to occur. This paper utilises an empirical approach to explore the nature of these invisible networks and the degree to which the use of SNT by students outside of the classroom may provide support for student learning in relation to informal learning and social interaction. Additionally this paper seeks to determine if the use of Facebook by students may provide an indication of the likelihood of student success on their course. This study explores the use of Facebook through the use of a case study of one cohort (90 students) who are undertaking a one-year Foundation in Art and Design course within a specialist art college. This research utilises the technique of Social Network Analysis (SNA) in order to visualise the type of interactions that occur within the online network and the strength of these interactions (Dawson, 2008). Results demonstrate that within this case study the student group created a complex and interrelated network of connections through Facebook with some students clearly placed at the centre of the network and others on the periphery. It is also demonstrated that those students who are more central within the network are more likely to remain on the course and achieve their qualification. This paper demonstrates that SNA provides a useful and insightful way in which to visualize what would otherwise be an invisible network of connections made by students outside of the classroom. Furthermore this paper will provide an insight for teachers and researchers into the benefits of the use of SNT within education, which will have practical implications for the future use of SNT in teaching and learning.

THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL NETWORK TO STUDENTS

While everyone has been busy with their respective concerns, we have been hectic working on this paper as well. This seems to be easy but believe us; it took months of scrupulous writing and editing before we saw it printed. Now that it was done, we would like to express our earnest gratitude to the people who had helped us on the creation of this research work.

Impact of Social Networking Websites on Students learning

This research paper investigates the effect of social networking on student performance those use the social websites. Variables which are used in this research paper are gender, education, age, academic performance and social influence. Our research is based on quantitative and descriptive research. Some data is collected from different websites, magazines and journals and 168 questioners are filled from different universities professors and students. The result shows that in age range between 15 to 25 mostly use social networking websites for enjoyment, 60% of male respondent used these websites for information. Inter and Graduation students mostly used these websites for enjoyment. The result also shows some people also used social websites for social influence. This study also shows these students also used social websites for relatives, professors and friends. Students whose gpa are 3.0 to 3.5 GPA (Grade Point Average) commonly use social networking websites for enjoyment 1.Introduction The impact of the Internet on education is important issues that become critical situation for us in recent year. Internet is a very essential part of life for enjoyment and education. It is a very large community which is using internet for pure education but unfortunately we have also a very large number of people including majority of youth and teenager using Internet only for enjoyment. Internet is very big evolution of technology but when we talk about the social networks it is extremely dangerous for youth because student involve in time wasting activities. Internet affects our social values and morality. This study is very important for any country tradition and morality base values. Recently Pakistan face different difficulties and issues one of important issue is that social network destroy our tradition and values. Social media also affect student life in wrong way.Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010) social network websites grab attention of the students and diverts it towards non-educational and unproductive actions including useless chatting. On the basis of the above statement we can say that social networking sites may nagatively affect the academic life and learning experiences of the student.Liccardi et al (2007) argue that the students are socially connected with each other for sharing their different learning experiences and do conversation about different issues and topic. Trusov, Bucklin, and Pauwels (2009) says that the Internet is big evolution of technology but specifically social networks are extremely harmful for teenagers, social networks become common and well-known in past few years. In the same way Cain (2009) highlighted that social network websites can be practiced for good determinations but it used for Involvement of digital snapshots and information, exposing securities, and conducting online conversations because many other communities inside social networking websites motivate user for this kind of inappropriate actions.According to Ellison, Steinfield, and Lampe (2007) students use social networking websites approximately 30 minutes throughout the day as a part of their daily routine life. This statement shows the importance of social networking websites in students' life and his learning performance. Boyd & Ellison (2007) argued that the U.S. Congress has proposed legislation to ban youth from accessing social networking websites in schools and libraries. When the highly developed nations take stands over the use of social networking websites and cannot allow these social networking websites for countrymen, youth, students and working people. This research mainly focuses on such factors that affect student's academic life and learning experience.Tinto (1997) point out that extracurricular activities and academic activities are not enough to satisfy some student those who are suffered by social networking isolation. This shows that social networks are beneficial for the students in their learning experiences as well as in their academic life.Lenhart and Madden (2007) argued that the students strongly recommend social networking websites to stay in touch with

Online Social Networks Impact in Secondary Education

This paper presents and analyzes the potential uses and motivations of online social networks in education, with special emphasis on secondary education. First, we show several previous researches supporting the use of social networking as an educational tool and discuss Edmodo, an educative online social network. The work carried out during two academic years with senior students of primary and secondary schools is also analyzed. This research has allowed us to see the reality of social network use among young people and identify the challenges of its application to education environment.

ONLINE SOCIAL NETWORKING AS A TOOL TO ENHANCE LEARNING IN THE MAURITIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM

Social networking sites enable individuals to connect to each other to form online communities. In the last decade, online social networking (OSN) has become a fashionable means of communication among Internet users, particularly the young generation. It is known that the majority of adolescents log on their OSN accounts daily and stay log on for a prolonged period of time. Thus, social networking sites represent a potential technology that can be exploited to enhance learning so as to help students in their education. In this paper, the outcome of a major survey carried out among the secondary level students in Mauritius is reported. It is seen that most students are already using OSN for non-formal learning with 39% of the respondents stating that they make use of OSN to discuss school work. It is also observed that OSN acts as a platform for these adolescents to communicate and collaborate on school related projects or assignments. Most students agreed on the fact that OSN can be beneficial for their studies. It is also found that a small percentage of teachers are using OSN as a tool to facilitate teaching and learning. Therefore, a few recommendations are made in this paper with respect to the integration of OSN in the Mauritian secondary education system.

Using Facebook in an Irish third-level education context: a case-study

2013

S ocial networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter have become social phenomena, and educators are increasingly experimenting with these new tools in order to find out if they can be used for teaching and learning. However, we can question if the use of social media is really in the process of changing teaching and learning practices and whether Irish students are ready to adopt these new tools. We can also query whether social networking sites can contribute to connecting students and developing the feeling of belonging to a learning community amongst them. In order to investigate these various issues, this chapter offers the findings from a case-study where a Facebook page was introduced in a learning context. Based on the comparison and analysis of student and staff participation and usage patterns between a virtual learning environment (VLE) and a Facebook page, as well as feedback questionnaires, this study highlights that the social networking site led to a greater level of interactivity amongst students, who enjoyed the informality and accessibility of the page. Yet, preconceptions associated with social media continued to prevail, with students failing to appreciate the educational potential of the site.

Social-Network-Sites (SNS) & its Impact on Students' Academic Learning

IEEE, 2018

Social-Network-Sites (SNS) was developed to serve as a platform to connect people. Now a days its reach has magnified and it has become an integral parts of our lives. One can easily access the infinite pool of information, establish connection, share thoughts and videos and can also participate in interactive learning through SNS. It has completely revolutionized the society but what matters is how one is using these resources? The paper will focus on the positives and negatives of SNS, its impact on academic learning of the students and the frequency of them accessing these sites. The research is based on a sample of undergraduate students from Symbiosis International (Deemed University).

An assessment into the impact of using on-line social networking in enhancing learning at University of Malawi - Kamuzu College of Nursing

2015

Quality Management is a critical success factor for organizations to grow their business. Though for a long time, quality management has always been attributed to industries that produce physical products which normally undergo quality inspection at the end of the line, there has been a shift in the trend in recent times where quality management strategies are being applied in service delivery industries as well. One of the service delivery industries is the education sector and especially higher learning institutions like UNIMA-KCN in particular. In the TQM model of quality management, one of its strategies namely Deming Theory says that; to implement quality management in service delivery there is a need to look at how the processes and systems of an organization work, understanding the changes taking place and its causal factors and understanding the human nature and how they are influenced (Knowles, 2011). At KCN one of the key processes for the success of the service delivery is the teaching and learning process which for a long time has used the traditional classroom style of delivery. However, there is a new trend of technology that has come into play in recent years and it is required that institution of higher learning should adopt these technology applications to enhance its processes of service delivery in order to improve quality. This study utilized a case study research strategy under qualitative research method to assess the impact of using online social networking in enhancing learning and teaching at KCN as part of quality management. Data was collected from students and lecturers using a questionnaire which assessed the current dominant learning and teaching styles at KCN, the perception of students and lecturers on use of social networks, challenges facing the adoption of social networks for learning and the proposed strategies that can assist in adopting the use of social networks for learning. The collected data was analyzed using qualitative analysis method with Survey Monkey tool and the results clearly show that social networks have a positive impact on learning and teaching process. The results further confirm that KCN is ready to adopt the use of social networks for learning as it possesses the required teaching and learning styles and it has positive perception towards social networks. The study recommends that a further research be conducted to ascertain the suggested social sites and the strategy of implementing the use of social networks for learning. This could be done with the use of a survey strategy and probability sampling to ensure all data is properly captured from students and lecturers.
