A Comparative Study between Lean Construction and the Traditional Production System
The growing context of globalization permanently increases pressure on the construction companies to improve their performances in order to resist to the constraints of competitiveness in the international market. It has become ineluctable to look for introducing a new alternative capable of bringing creative improvement to the traditional production system. This paper will relate mainly to the most relevant management techniques in the construction industry, and more specifically, the lean construction concept. Initially, we willdetermine the main characteristics of the construction industry compared to the manufacturing industry according to three levels: on-site production, one of a kind projects, and complexity. Subsequently, we will focus our attention on the main sources of waste in the construction industry. Finally, a rigorous comparative study will be carried out to show the contribution of the lean construction tools in the promotion of traditional construction especially at the level of the following factors: Creating value and eliminating waste; Planning and mutual coordination; Site organization. Lean construction as Last Planner System (LPS), Value Stream Mapping (VSM), Just-in-Time philosophy, Visual management (VM) and 5S have shown a great ability to improve the traditional production system through waste reduction, encouraging people involvement, ensuring a pull flow production, and promotion of a continuous improvement philosophy.

The productivity of the construction industry worldwide has been declining over the past 40 years. One approach for improving the situation is using lean construction. Essential features of lean construction include a clear set of objectives for the delivery process, aimed at maximizing performance for the customer at the project level, concurrent design, construction, and the application of project control throughout the life cycle of the project from design to delivery. Lean construction is implemented through various lean-based tools or in other words lean techniques. Implementation of these techniques in simple and complex projects makes the projects easier to manage, safer, completed sooner, and cost less and is of better quality. This paper involves the study of principles, methods, and implementation phases of lean construction showing the waste in construction and how it could be minimized. A field study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of some lean construction t...

Lean thinking has now become a radical philosophy that has permeated and expanded in to several sectors other than just manufacturing. The concept of Lean thinking evolves the optimization of work flow related functions and the possible outcomes with its contribution to sustainable construction. Correspondingly, application of lean theories and principles in to construction sector has the potential to improve the quality of work, aggravate the function related effectiveness, minimize the cost components/ waste and increase the overall profit in both strategic and operational levels. Apparently, it appears that the lean techniques have immensely contributed for many possible cost reductions compared with the traditional project management techniques. However, few barriers for the implementation of lean principles are also on the contrary. The research aims to investigate the effects of Lean Construction applications while identifying the prevailing barriers related to the same. The research has exploited qualitative methods to explore the aforementioned research question. This paper presents an exploratory study from extent literature, predominantly based on a case study of a project management organization whereas the arguments were strengthened and underpinned by the formation of a conceptual framework to explore the contribution of implementing lean construction techniques in sustainable construction. The research findings would ultimately help different stakeholders on applying lean theories in to practice. Integration of Lean Construction Considerations Into Design Process of Construction Projects
2015
The design phase in the life cycle of a construction project contributes significantly to the performance of a project. The poor outcomes from the design phase in the construction project development process are considered as the major contributors to project delay, poor performance, and budget overrun. All of these affect the overall project performance. It is the aim of this study to innovate a design process model to improve the performance of design process where conventional design processes would not be effectively or efficiently applied. The adaptation of lean principles with the identification of wastes in design process and identification of enablers in design process are evaluated. The innovative design process model presented in this paper is developed based on the core enabler that can be used to eliminate the identified waste. There are 15 wastes identified and the set-based concurrent engineering (SBCE) is considered in the core enabler of the design process model.
