Students’ Perception of Using Podcasts to Improve Listening Skills at the 3rd Semester Students of English Department at Universitas Bandar Lampung

The process of developing listening skills involves capturing the speaker's words, grasping their intended message, and encompassing the roles of both speaker and listener, along with the auditory aspect. This study aims to investigate how students perceive the use of podcasts for enhancing listening skills among 3rd semester students in the English Department of Universitas Bandar Lampung. Employing qualitative methods, the research was conducted with a participant group of 34 students from the university's English Department. Data collection encompassed surveys and interviews involving 5 students. The collected data was analyzed by merging insights from both the surveys and interviews. The findings demonstrate noticeable enhancements in students' listening skills through the integration of podcasts as a learning medium. Listening is one of necessary skill in learning English and also the patent skill in English language beside speaking, writing, and reading. Online Radio: A R D Project in higher education

The purpose of this study was to report the findings of research conducted at the English Language and Literature Department of Universitas Negeri Semarang. This is a multi-year study funded by the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education as an effort to improve the students' speaking skill using online radio. This research uses Research and Development (RND) design by identifying students' speaking skills and developing radio models on campus. In the first year, the research focuses on introduction and development. The introduction consists of literature studies and needs surveys; while the development includes divergent, convergent, and final processes. Based on the findings of the research, it can be found that the use of English in the daily routine of students is 60.5% (never), 23.7% (always), 7.9% (sometimes), 5, 3% (rare) and 2.6% (often). Then, the students use English as a means of communication on campus 36.8% (often), 36.8% (sometimes), 15.8% (rare) and 10.5% (often). Meanwhile, this study also produced an online radio model. This product can be seen in englishb3.caster.fm. This online product is made by collaborating free available radio software called caster.fm and some material that includes 1) CPU & monitor, 2) cable, 3) microphone, and 4) mixer. This online radio product has also been supervised by Unit of Multimedia Development for Education and Culture (BPMPK), and used in speaking practices by English students.

Improving the Students’ Listening Ability through Broadcast Voice of America (VOA) Learning English to the Second Grade Students of SMAN 1 Peusangan Siblah Krueng

This study describes classroom action research conducted in the second grade of SMAN 1 Peusangan Siblah Krueng to improve students' listening Ability through the application of Broadcast Voice of America (VOA) Learning English as a media. The research method used in this class is a collaborative classroom action research method by collaborating with the English teacher at SMAN 1 Peusangan Siblah Krueng. This classroom action research was carried out in two cycles. Each cycle consists of 4 stages, namely the planning stage, the implementation stage, the observation stage and finally the reflection stage. To obtain data in this study, qualitative and quantitative data were used as seen from various activities carried out in improving listening ability through the application of Broadcast Voice of America (VOA) Learning English. The purpose of this research is to know Broadcast Voice of America (VOA) Learning English improve the students listening ability, to know the students' response toward in listening ability after using Broadcast Voice of America (VOA) Learning English, and to find out the teacher performance in teaching and learning process by the implementation of Broadcast Voice of America (VOA) Learning English.

An analysis of students’ listening comprehension through video-based internet material (BBC) in second grade students of SMAN 4 Bandar Lampung in 2016-2017

This research aims to apply BBC (British Broadcasting Cooperation) to students. BBC is one of broadcaster in Britain and it provides a website to learn. Its name is BBC Learning English and it shows many videos and the facilities to learn. The purpose of this research is to analyze the students’ listening comprehension. In this research, I used qualitative research. The kind of research was used to get information about phenomenon and an accident during the research. The method of this research was audio-visual method where students used their sight and hearing sense. Because BBC provided many videos, it was apt with this method. In here, students did not merely acquire the information from their hearing sense but they were helped by the picture and the accident. The Influence of Using Podcast in Teaching Selective Listening of Sman 2 Kota Serang

Listening becomes the first step in learning. Nation and Newton (2012 : 37) states that listening is the natural precursor to speaking; the early stages of language development in a person‘s first language. The objective of the research is to find out the influence of using podcast in teaching listening skill. In order to achieve the objective of this research, the researcher conducted the data through true experimental in quantitative approach. The researcher used cluster random sampling. The researcher took control class and experimental class for gathering the data to be analyzed. Based on the calculation, it was normally distributed and homogen. Based on the result of test of mean difference significant (independent ), it was Calculated or 0.33 2.01. The alternative hypothesis was received. It can be concluded that there was an influence of using podcast in teaching listening at tenth grade of SMAN 2 kota Serang.

IMPROVING GRADE VIII STUDENTS' LISTENING SKILLS THROUGH DIGITAL MEDIA PENINGKATAN KETERAMPILAN MENDENGARKAN SISWA KELAS VIII MELALUI DIGITAL MEDIA

This study was aimed at improving the listening skills of Grade VIII students of SMPN 5 Panggang, Gunungkidul in the Academic Year of 2013/2014 through digital media. This collaborative action research study was carried out in three cycles which consisted of: (1) planning, (2) action, (3) observation, and (4) reflection. The data were gathered through observations, interviews/testimonies, rating, video/audio recording, and performance tests which were analyzed using the interactive qualitative data analysis and descriptive statistics. The findings show that the digital media are believed to improve the listening learning processes which lead into the improvement of students' listening skills. The results are: (1) pictures in the pre-listening activity is found to increase students' interest in the lesson, direct their minds into the topic and motivate them to learn; (2) audio media make students happy and actively involved in the listening instructional process, recognize the communicative functions of the texts, retain the chunks of language, distinguish among the distinctive sounds of English, recognize English stress patterns and intonation, recognize words in the given spoken texts, and comprehend the texts; and (3) the digital stories are able to grab students' attention, make them happy, facilitate them to focus on the monologues and comprehend them better. Abstrak Penelitian ini ditujukan untuk meningkatkan keterampilan menyimak siswa Kelas VIII di SMPN 5 Panggang, Gunungkidul Pada Tahun Ajaran 2013/2014 melalui media digital. Penelitian tindakan kolaboratif ini dilaksanakan dalam tiga siklus yang terdiri dari: (1) perencanaan, (2) tindakan, (3) pengamatan, dan (4) refleksi. Data dalam penelitian ini dikumpulkan melalui pengamatan, wawancara/testimony, rating, rekaman audio/video, dan tes unjuk kerja. Data tersebut kemudian dianalisis dengan analisis data kualitatif interaktif dan statistic deskriptif. Temuan penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa media digital dipercaya telah meningkatkan proses pembelajaran menyimak yang menuju pada peningkatan keterampilan menyimak siswa. Hasil dari aktivitas tersebut adalah sebagai berikut: (1) gambar pada kegiatan pre-listening dapat meningkatkan minat siswa pada pembelajaran, mengarahkan pikiran mereka pada topik, dan memotivasi mereka untuk belajar; (2) media audio membuat siswa senang selama pembelajaran dan mereka berperan aktif dalam pembelajaran menyimak, mengenali fungsi komunikatif teks, menyimpan potongan-potongan bahasa, membedakan suara yang mirip dalam Bahasa Inggris, mengenali pola tekanan dan intonasi dalam Bahasa Inggris, mengenali kata dalam teks lisan, dan memahami teks; (3) media digital stories (media audiovisual) mampu mendapatkan perhatian siswa, membuat mereka senang, memfasilitasi mereka untuk fokus pada monolog, dan memahaminya dengan lebih baik sehingga mereka dapat mengambil kesimpulan tentang situasi, partisipan, dan tujuan dari monolog tersebut. English Department of Unp Students’Ability in Listening to English News

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk melihat kemampuan mahasiswa bahasa Inggris merespon informasi dalam mendengarkan berita bahasa Inggris. Peserta penelitian adalah mahasiswa bahasa Inggris angkatan 2011 yang telah lulus mata kuliah Listening 1 dan Listening 2. Penelitian ini berbentuk mix-method research yang melibatkan dua teknik pengumpulan data, yaitu secara kuantitatif melalui tes mendengar dan kualitatif melalui wawancara. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa bahasa Inggris memiliki kemampuan yang cukup baik dalam merespon informasi dalam mendengarkan berita bahasa Inggris, yaitu dengan nilai rata-rata 68.4. Dari hasil wawancara dapat disimpulkan bahwa kemampuan mahasiswa dipengaruhi oleh metode pengajaran yang diterapkan dosen dan banyaknya latihan.

The Influence of the Application of Video of Indonesian News Anchor on the Students’ Achievement in English Listening in the Title of News Item Text at the First Grade of MA An-Nur Cirebon

The problem arises when the students at the first grade of MA An-Nur get low score in listening class. Based on the observation, they find difficulties in catching the information from listening audio which uttered by native speakers of English. Listening is the basic skill which should be built in the process of people’s language development. Nation and Newton(2009: 37), they stated that the early stage of language development of person first or second language is depending on listening. The goals of this research are: (1) to investigate the students’ achievement in English listening before using video of Indonesian news anchor, (2) to investigate the students’ achievement in English listening after using video of Indonesian news anchor, (3) to investigate how far the influence of the use of video of Indonesian news anchor on the students’ achievement in English listening. The research is conducted on April till June 2014 at the first grade of MA An- Nur Cirebon. The method used in this research is quantitative with experimental research using one group pre-test and post-test design. The sample in this research is 20 students at the first grade of MA An-NurCirebon. The technique of collecting data which used is test. There are 20 questions inside the test. The data is analyzed by using paired sample t-test in SPSS 17. The result shows that the students’ achievement in English listening before watching video of Indonesian news anchor is 55.5 which categorized as “sufficient”. In post-test, the students’ result is increased up to 64.2 which categorized as “high”. Based on the output of paired sample t-test, the score of t0 is known as -4.145. This score is lower than the negative ttable (α; n-1) which known as -2.093. By considering that result, the null hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. It means the use of video of Indonesian news anchor is effective to increase the students’ achievement in English listening.
