The Competence of Primary School English Teachers in Indonesia

The problem of this research is 'what is the level of professional and pedagogic competence of English primary school teachers?'. This paper highlights the findings of a study which was undertaken at primary schools in Indonesia. The aims of the study were to explore the primary school English teachers' competence about their professional and pedagogic competency. Test and open question were employed to obtain the data of the level of professional and pedagogic competencies. The recommendations for the improvement of professional and pedagogic competencies of primary school teachers of English were also provided.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OF ENGLISH TEACHERS IN INDONESIA: A PROFILE OF EXEMPLARY TEACHERS

This study was conducted to find out the profile of exemplary English teachers at secondary schools. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The study was conducted in four towns, covering exemplary teachers in one senior high school and three junior high schools. The subjects were exemplary in terms of their active participation in the Teachers' Forum (MGMP), and their roles in the professional development of both themselves and their colleagues. This study was done mainly to find out (1) the professional competences of the exemplary teachers in each town and (2) how they achieve the competences. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively by the usual process of sorting, coding, and analyzing. The findings reveal that the subjects in three of the four towns have all the four competences (subject matter, pedagogical, social and personal competences), with the personal competence being the most influential in shaping them as professional and exemplary teachers. From the findings a profile of the professional competences of the exemplary English teachers at secondary schools is developed. Keywords: professional competence, exemplary teacher, profile.

Description of Elementary Teacher Education Program’s Student: Mapping Indonesian Language Competence for Prospective Teacher

Pedagogic competence is the ability that must be possessed by a teacher in managing learners learn from planning execution and evaluation. In pedagogic competence, one of which must be improved by a prospective teacher is language competence. Indonesian is used as the medium of instruction in education. In the curriculum of primary, secondary and higher education must include the language. The importance of Indonesian language competence is well controlled by the students because the future teacher students will be able to establish good communication between students and teachers as well as have a good mastery of language structure and grammar. This research uses descriptive quantitative research design. The purpose of this study is to describe the students of the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University. A total of 340 students at elementary school teacher education Faculty of Teacher Training and Education program Jambi University participated in the study. The instrument used in this research is the test. The form of test used is a multiple choice with 4 choices and the number of questions about 32 questions. The test is used to measure students' competence on Indonesian competence and Pedagogic Competence. The results showed that the pedagogic competence of the students at elementary school teacher education program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University was categorized as bad. This is because the number of students at elementary school teacher education program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University in the category is not good as much as 254 students or 74.71%. The competence of the language was in the good category. In the language competence, the students at elementary school teacher education program of Faculty of Teacher Training and Education of Jambi University have competence in a good category that is total 160 students and percentage 47.05%.

Professional development of English language teachers in Malang, Indonesia: Institutional and individual perspectives

Two important areas of professional development for teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL) in Indonesia identified in the 2003 Law on National Education System and 2005 Law on Teachers and Lecturers are disciplinary knowledge and ICT skills. Learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in senior high schools (SHS) in Indonesia in general and in Papua, in particular, has shown unsatisfactory results.
