Mental Health and Physical Activity in Health-Related University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic led to increased negative emotional states among students. Physical activity is known to have positive impacts on mental health and well-being. However, due to the closure of gyms and other recreational facilities as a restrictive measure, students’ physical activity levels may decrease. Effect of the Coronavirus Pandemic on Physical Activity in the Context of Mental Well-Being: A Multi-Country Comparison Among Higher Education Students

Regular physical activity (PA) plays a key role in maintaining physical and mental well-being; and even in pandemic time, it has special importance. This study investigated the changes in patterns of moderate and vigorous PA prior to and during coronavirus pandemic in a diverse sample of 125 higher education institutes from 26 countries. Association between mental well-being and changes in PA was also evaluated. Data for the present study has been used from the “COVID-19 International Student Well-being Study” (2020). 88,270 students of higher education aged 23.29 SD=5.70 years (72.8% females) completed an online questionnaire. Results indicated a global decrease both in moderate and vigorous PA, with women becoming more active than their male counterparts during pandemic time. The level of physical activity of university students in Slovakia during COVID - 19 pandemic

Background and Study Aim COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic has affected several areas of human and public life. The implementation of the restrictions affects free movement, leading to limited physical activity (PA) level. The main aim of the study was to determine the level of PA of university students in Slovakia during COVID-19 pandemics. Material and Methods The sample consisted of 3128 university students. Data was obtained from students from three universities with different specializations. A questionnaire about lifestyle with questions about physical activity was used. The questionnaire was distributed using online communication systems of universities. The online questionnaire was answered by 3128 students. Results Analyzed data were obtained from 3128 students. The results indicate that 38% of all students exercise 3-4 times per week, while 41% exercise 1-2 times per week, and 21% do not exercise at all, or exercise 1-2 times per month. Found weak positive correlation (r=0,337) was between the exercise frequency and perception of well-being, and a very weak positive correlation (r=0,187) between the exercise frequency and stress intensity. A moderate positive correlation was found between the perception of health and life energy (r=0,579). A moderate positive correlation was observed between the perception of health and physical strength (r=0,579). Conclusions COVID-19 restrictions have been associated with the reduction of physical activity of the students. To avoid the negative effects of a sedentary lifestyle, it is necessary to promote activity among university students.

Does Physical Activity Matter for the Mental Health of University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Research indicates that university and college students are at higher risk of experiencing mental health problems than other populations. This study aims to examine the relationship between Physical Activity (PA) and the mental health of Ukrainian university students during the Corona Virus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic lockdown. The conventional sample consisted of 1512 students from 11 Ukrainian universities, with a mean age of 20 years (M = 20.06, SD = 3.05) and 69% of whom were female. The cross-sectional online survey was disseminated through the most popular social media channels in Ukraine (i.e., Facebook, Viber, Telegram) and included the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale to measure anxiety and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) to assess depression. Data were collected from 14 May to 4 June 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak in Ukraine. Among university students, 43% were engaged in PA ≥ 150 min weekly, 24% met the criteria of GAD, and 32% met the criteria of depression. More students were involved in PA before the COVID-19 outbreak than during the national lockdown. Students with anxiety and depression were almost two times less likely to engage in PA than their counterparts without mental health disorders. The inactive group had higher scores of anxiety and depression than the physically active group. The relationship of PA with anxiety and depression was statistically significant but weak during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Funds collection zebranie funduszy Summary Background. Due to COVID-19, social isolation and home confinement have changed daily behavior in Hungary since the pandemic hit in early 2020. This study aimed to examine physical activity (PA) patterns among young adults before and during distancing and lockdown safety measures. Material and methods. We recruited 827 students online across 10 faculties at the University of Pécs during April and May 2020. PA level (IPAQ-SF) and self-rated physical and mental health status were examined. The level of significance was set at p<0.05. Results. Students' perceived mental health status proved to be worse than perceived physical health, while the percentage of individuals who did not engage in any sports decreased from 37.61% to 29.26%. Total PA levels and walking times were decreased, while sitting time significantly increased (p<0.001). A positive correlation was found between perceived physical health and total PA (R=0.215, p<0.001) as well as between perceived mental health and walking (R=0.091, p=0.009) and total PA (R=0.106, p=0.002). Conclusions. We found decreased amounts of PA among university students during the COVID-19 pandemic period, which highlights the need to promote a physically active lifestyle in cases of social restrictions.

University Students' Daily Activities and Physical Fitness during COVID-19 Pandemic

This study aims to evaluate university students' daily activities and the effect of physical activity on physical fitness, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. This research used comparative and correlational research methods. Thirty research samples consisted of 13 junior year university students and 17 senior year university students were selected by the purposive sampling method. Every student was monitored for their daily activities for one week and categorized into sports, college, organization, and other activities. Physical fitness was measured using the MFT test to measure the VO2Max in ml/kg/min units. The data analysis results showed no significant difference between junior and senior semester students in VO2Max, physical exercise, organizational activities, lecture activities, sleeping, and other activities. There was a significant difference in VO2Max and physical exercises (sig < 0.05) between genders. Male students spent more time exercising (17.87 ± 11.1) than female students (10.80 ± 6.04). Furthermore, male students had a higher average VO2Max (42.38 ± 7.53) than female students (29.36 ± 6.07). Based on the regression analysis results, there is a significant value between physical exercises and sleeping toward VO2Max capacity (sig. < 0.05).

Introduction. Quarantine is a complex definition that consists of administrative and sanitary measures designed to prevent the spread of communicable diseases to both humans and animals. Physical Activity Behaviors and Physical Work Capacity in University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic

Objective. The COVID-19 pandemic led to restricted access to sports and recreation facilities, resulting in a general decrease in physical activity. Many studies present the results of on-line questionnaires conducted during the pandemic, but there are few reports of objectively measured indicators of physical condition.
