Objectives: The study focuses on the attitudes and extent of information literacy of students towards virtual learning environment in the context of higher education in Rajshahi University. It explores the features and facilities of VLE used by students. It also highlights the reasons of motivation for using VLE as well as problems encountered by them at Rajshahi University in Bangladesh. Methodology: The study adopted survey research strategy. To collect data, a structured questionnaire was designed using likert scale. Also, personal observation and face to face discussions were used in explaining the phenomenon to the participants. A survey has been conducted through distributing the questionnaire among 240 undergraduate and graduate students of social science faculty, who have certain research experience, of Rajshahi University, Bangladesh. The samples were chosen purposively from nine departments of social science faculty. SPSS software package and Microsoft office excel were used to analyze the quantitative data. Results: Most of the respondent agreed that VLE is used for preparing class related elements through internet, and it provides service to enhance existing academic practices. They use VLE for preparing assignment, presentation and note for examination. But regarding participation of online course the students show neutral attitude. They often use opera in accessing VLE for collecting information. Most of them have been using Wi-Fi rather than broad band in order to access in VLE. A few of them know the way to search the resources via VLE in the central library. About using e-resources of library through VLE, most of them use e-books frequently where as a few of them use HINARI, AGORA and BanglaJOL databases. They acquainted with information literacy program of VLE offered by library, and it helps them to access, evaluate and use information ethically & to lead a greater diversity of the learning process in higher education. They are familiar about accessing the web to search information, posting messages and participating in synchronous discussion. understand the necessity of sharing educational materials with their students via the web to enhance literacy of VLE.

Background. Information literacy is one of the expected learning outcomes of elementary education in Thailand. However, there is no information literacy course in the elementary education curriculum, and information literacy instruction is left largely to individual teachers. A virtual learning environment is proposed for integrating information literacy instruction in course teaching. Objective. This study sought to identify components and factors that enable the integration of information literacy instruction at the elementary level using a virtual learning environment. Method. Questionnaires were sent to a sample of elementary school teachers in Thailand. The data were analysed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Results. The results indicated eleven components and seven factors relevant to the integration of information literacy instruction in elementary education using a virtual learning environment. The components include expected learning outcomes, learning objectives, content management, teaching methods, learning activities, learning interactions, learning resources, and learning assessment. The factors include administrators, teachers, librarians, learners, relationship between teacher and students, and technological qualities. The results of this study will be used in the development of a model for integrating information literacy instruction in course teaching using a virtual learning environment.

The DIDET digital library and VLE approach places much of the responsibility for managing the digital library work flow into the hands of students, as well as academics and librarians. Student responsibilities include the application of metadata, as well as conventional information literacy competencies such as ascertaining information resource provenance, investigating intellectual property rights and/or digital rights management implications, before depositing digital resources within the library. This has obviously laid bare numerous research issues relating to future digital library and VLE design, student information literacy, the use of ICT in education and design, and related pedagogical issues, all of which are worthy of further investigation within the UK HE community and will be elucidated in this paper. More importantly, this paper will argue that such a model signifies a definite impasse in the evolution of e-learning models and questions the degree to which current information literacy models are effective in specific e-learning contexts. The paper will conclude by further recognising that greater student information literacy skills are necessary to unlock the potential of such radical approaches to e-learning and digital library creation.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to present findings of the design and implementation of an online information literacy module to first‐year students at the University of Botswana.Design/methodology/approachThe study population consisted of 103 first‐year students in the Department of Library and Information Studies. The population was divided into three equal groups of 34, 34 and 35, respectively, and each assigned a two‐hour slot in the smart computer laboratory weekly for five consecutive weeks, to cover five information literacy topics online. Each group was assigned a tutor who received assignments online and graded them. Each topic was followed by questions for students to answer.FindingsFindings generally revealed that impartation of information literacy through the online mode could improve students' competencies perhaps more than the face‐to‐face instruction approach. Information and digital literacy competencies in a virtual degree

The article explores the perception of undergraduate students at a public state university in Mexico, regarding their experience after completing the Multimodal Transversal Learning Unit Information and Digital Literacy. The research explores two aspects: self-perception of students regarding their level of achievement in specific digital competencies and main learning outcomes after completing the course. It also reports their assessment in five aspects: syllabus, educational resources, learning activities, coverage of the cross-cutting themes throughout the course, as well as operation of the Learning Management System and technical support. The research was quantitative, through a survey applied to 16 students in the first group that completed the curricular unit. Among the results, the following are reported: perceived levels of achievement in different competency indicators, best valued competencies, and overall assessment of the course by the students. The highest levels of achievement reported are in indicators associated with the students’ daily practices interests. The lowest levels of achievement are in the areas of algorithmic understanding and the generation of original contributions and digital content.
