VOTING PATTERNS & BEHAVIOURS OF VOTERS DURING LOK SABHA ELECTIONS: A STUDY OF UTTAR PRADESH

Uttar Pradesh (UP), the most populous state in India is considered the heartland of Indian politics as it alone comprises approximately 15 % of the Lok Sabha (LS) seats (80). If we look at the political landscape of UP, the major political parties thrived solely on Caste arithmetic and communal politics which made this state politically sensitive and volatile in every way. The major turnaround in the voting pattern and vote shares in the consecutive LS Elections of 2014 as well as 2019 in favor of BJP, cutting down or undermining the major caste-based parties in the state, has left enough scope for research studies. Based on the above terms of reference, the present study titled “Voting Patterns & Behaviors of People During LS Elections: A study of Uttar Pradesh” was carried out to assess the voting patterns and behaviors of people in the state. In this study the main objective was to study the most important issues and factors responsible for the three-dimensional changes in voting pattern as well as voting behavior in the state in the 2019 LS elections. The methodology adopted for this research is both qualitative and quantitative. The primary data was collected through survey using structured questionnaires and individual interviews of party representatives and journalists. Besides, information from Census of India, Reports of ECI and various research articles and papers related to the study area and relevant books were used as secondary data. Internet resources also have been accessed extensively. Samples were drawn from 25 districts of UP. Convenience sampling was used due to complete lockdown in the state, ensuing the threat of corona pandemic. The responses of 650 participants were collected, collated and analyzed using descriptive statistics and thematic analysis. The major findings/insights that came out from the present study are:  In LS elections PM face has always been important for voters for deciding their vote.  Caste influence has not gone down but only have sharpened.  Influence of religion in voting is increasing.  Importance of nationalistic issues has gone up.

Voting is one of the most commonly used terms in contemporary age of democratic politics. The ever increasing popularity of democratic theory and practices has even made this term a household name. In democratic systems, and their number is quite large and ever increasing, each adult citizen uses 'voting' as a means for expressing his approval or disapproval of governmental decisions, policies and programmers of various political parties and the qualities of the candidates who are engaged in the struggle to get the status of being the representatives of the people. The study of determinants of electoral behaviour constitutes a very significant area of empirical investigation. Man is a rational creature in the philosophical sense of term; he is not so rational in the realms of his economic or political behaviour. An empirical study of the determinants of electoral behaviour displays the astounding fact that the behaviour of man is influenced by several irrational factors and pressure groups in invoking religious and communal factors, influence of money or charismatic personality of a leader and host of other irrational forces have their definite influence on the minds of the voters. The main purpose of the present study is to focus attention on voting behaviour in India and to highlight the factors that determine the voting behaviour in India.

A study of electoral dynamic and voting behavior from 2004 to 2019 in Lok Sabha elections of West Bengal

The present paper aims to investigate the spatiality of electoral behavior and its changing dimensions concerning the contemporary general elections in West Bengal. It analyses the general elections of 2004, 2009, 2014 and 2019 and observes the spatial changes of voting behavior in the context of political parties contesting the election. The study is based upon electoral data and theoretical arguments framed as opinion and analysis over the changing political reflection from the particular political space of West Bengal. The electoral data and inferences are shown by the Geospatial technique to visualize the voting behavior in the spatial context. It is true that political aspects of electoral behavior are organized on the basis of certain theoretical backgrounds having interdisciplinary nature. The methodology adopted for the study is theoretical and qualitative; however, arguments and analyses are based upon secondary electoral data derived from the Election Commission of India about elections and electoral behavior. The cartographic technique is adopted to show the spatiotemporal trends of the electoral behavior of the electorates of West Bengal.

The study examines the causes for the Aam Aadmi Party's landslide success in Punjab elections and why residents overwhelmingly voted for the Delhi model of development promised by the party in the state's 16th assembly election. The present study is based on secondary data sources and adapted the qualitative and quantitative methods. Participatory research methods, narratives, discourses, and grounded theory are the fundamental approaches besides correlation, technique, and geo-spatial mapping. The data has been analyzed and interpreted with the help of various statistical methods like simple statistics and cartographic techniques for analyzing data like percentages, choropleth, line Graphs, and Arc GIS 10.2. It is being observed that political partybased association, local groupings, language, class, factors of caste, biradari, ideology, and religious identities are the main contributing factors in defining the trend of voting behavior in Punjab. The emergence of Aam Admi party as a dominant political force in electoral politics of Punjab is reflected in the crucial adaptation of civic politics based on its profound Delhi Model.

Determinants of Turnout in Elections: A Case Study of 2008 General Elections in District Charsadda

In electoral studies understanding of voting behaviour at national level carry its own value, but there is a need to study the political behaviour at the micro level also. Turnout in elections is considered to be the measurement of the level of democratization. Pakistan being a third world country usually do not have good turnout in elections. Turnout in election is determined by various factors ranging from personal and group leverages to structural arrangements for the process of participation of the people in the election. The study is conducted in a rural region of Pakistan in the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa not only to obtain the voters' opinion but an effort is made to analyse the data in the existing socio economic and political conditions. It is hoped that the study will add to the existing scarce literature available in Pakistan on voting behaviour of people and their political participation.

The aim of this study is to find the political determinants of voting behaviour in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. It is a quantitative study aimed at knowing the political factors of voting behaviour in the earlier three general elections i.e., 2002, 2008 and 2013. Its major purpose is to see the changing trend of the voters in the mentioned elections. It has investigated 292 respondents who had cast vote in any of the target elections. The researchers asked questions through Likert scale questionnaire under purposive sampling technique. The study found a significant association of political factors such as candidate's affiliation, political party affiliation, party leadership affiliation and party ideology with the voting behaviour. The results of the data show changing scenario as the importance of numerous factors is replaced by others. The study recommends that local political leadership as well as Election Commission of Pakistan should come forward to actively launch an awareness movement. It should focus on the importance of vote towards increasing the ratio of participation in voting process, especially women's voting.

The aim of the present research was to find out the possible socioeconomic determinants of voting behaviour. The qualitative technique was used to gather and interpret the obtained data from the field and findings of the study are mainly based on empirical results. The researchers used individual in depth interviews, content analysis, and method in data collection phase. Respondents of the study were the household head of the research locale. The locale of the present research was village Chhwind, of Tehsil Malakwal district Mandi Baha-ud-Din. The finding of the present research was that higher level of education is associated with increased political knowledge, critical thinking skills, and civic engagement. Different types of families, such as nuclear families and joint families can have varying impact on voting behaviour. When society experiences stability and prosperity, individuals may prioritize economic factors when making voting decisions. Mass media including television, newspapers, and online platforms, plays a crucial role in shaping public opinion and influencing voters in the research locale.
