THE ROLE OF EDUCATION TOWARDS WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN INDIA
Today women play the leading role in developing the society. Society cannot be created without the active contribution of women. In India women do not use their rights and neither are considered independent to take any decision. In order to provide equal status in the society women need to be empowered.Women’s empowerment in India is heavily dependent on many different variables that includes geographical location (urban/rural), educational status, social status (caste and class), and age. Policies on women’s empowerment exist at the national, state, and local (Panchayat) levels in many sectors, including health, education, economic opportunities, gender-based violence, and political participation. However, there are significant gaps between policy formation and actual implementation at the community level. Women can be empowered only when they are literate and educated .Education is the key to unlock the golden door of freedom for development. Of Indian women today, the female literacy levels according to the Literacy Rate 2011 census has been 65.46% where the male literacy rate has been over 80%. Being literate or having only primary education is not enough to enhance productivity or to obtain better-paying jobs but it is essential for women to pursue the higher education.Even beyond literacy there is much that education can do for women’s rights, dignity and security. Therefore this research paper discusses the impact of literacy and education on empowerment of women as well as the suggestion to improve the changes that need to be considered for women empowerment and economic development.
ROLE OF EDUCATION IN THE EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN IN INDIA
Education and Society ( UGC CARE JOURNAL), 2013
Education is not only the main pillar of nation-building, but a nation moves towards progress through education. In a country, with different races of people, both men and women became uplifted towards development when illuminated by education. By the united force of men and women, especially women, a country lead its way to the path of success. Women"s empowerment is the basic necessity for this success. Again, education is the most powerful instrument of empowerment as it generates consciousness that leads to empowerment. Hence, to pave the way for women"s emancipation and empowerment, education plays a pivotal and inevitable role. According to Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru-"If you educate a man you educate an individual if you educate a woman you educate a whole family. Women empowered means mother India empowered." Education plays a vital role in women"s socioeconomic empowerment. Educated empowered women thrive in social, economic and family lives. So, women empowerment refers to strengthening women's social, economic, and educational power. It refers to an environment where there is no gender bias and equal rights in the community, society, and workplaces. Today, the female literacy level, according to the GOI report Literacy rate stands at 71.5% whereas the male literacy rate is over 84%. Again, the most recent labour force surveys conducted by NSSO (national sample survey office) published female worker population ratio (%) on the status basis in the country during 2013-14 and 2015-16 are 29.6% and 25.8% respectively. Education helps exercise women"s rights and responsibilities as members of their society. It gives them the chance to make a more meaningful decision in terms of political engagement and decision-making choices about life. Thus, education can benefit from building self-confidence, self-efficiency, and decision-making power, and increase gender parity in an organization and institution.
