Nowadays, the global energy generation system relies mostly on fossil fuels. However, their foreseen depletion for the forthcoming decades puts at risk the current schema and suggests a gradual transition to a more self sustainable system. Consequently, the European Union (EU) committed in March 2007 to set a binding target for 20% of the EU's total energy supply to come from renewables by 2020. In this work, we tackle the study of the renewables' potential for electricity production in the province of Jaén (southern Spain), which has a pronounced unbalance between its inner electricity production and consumption. The potential of biomass from olive trees, solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind power has been analyzed using Geographical Information System tools. As a preliminary result, it has been proposed the installation of 5 biomass facilities, with an estimated production of 735 GWh per year, 10 PV facilities, with an estimated production of 534 GWh per year, and 50 windmills, with an estimated production of 172 GWh per year. Overall, these three resources together would be able to increase the rate of produced to consumed electricity in the province from a 30% to a 77%.

This article has been extracted from the results of a thesis entitled "Potential bioelectricity production of the Madrid Community Agricultural Regions based on rye and triticale biomass." The aim was, first, to quantify the potential of rye (Secale Cereale L.) and triticale (Triticosecale Aestivum L.) biomass in each of the Madrid Community agricultural regions, and second, to locate the most suitable areas for the installation of power plants using biomass. At least 17,339.9 t d.m. of rye and triticale would be required to satisfy the biomass needs of a 2.2 MW power plant, (considering an efficiency of 21.5%, 8,000 expected operating hours/year and a biomass LCP of 4,060 kcal/kg for both crops), and 2,577 ha would be used (which represent 2.79% of the Madrid Community fallow dry land surface). Biomass yields that could be achieved in Madrid Community using 50% of the fallow dry land surface (46,150 ha representing 5.
An integrated hybrid renewable energy system: potential of electricity—a geospatial approach
SN Applied Sciences
The sustainable economic advancement of a nation stands on an adequate supply of electrical energy. Reduction in cost for industrial processing units has been pulled with the wide utilization of rice husk (RH) and solar energy as valueadded renewable energy sources for the era of power generation. The principal reason is to assist the study area towards development and to build up an integrated hybrid renewable power plant in rural regions in India. In this study, a new solar town concept and integrated biomass can be served as a hybrid global model for a smart eco-village in tropical countries like India. The demand, properties and cost of RH generation from rice mills resemble substitution of coal in power generation. Solar energy and agricultural residues are seasonally accessible sources and loosely dispersed over the substantial topographical area. So, for such an assessment, satellite image is a handy input and the preciseness of estimation increases with a high-resolution image. The methodology has been implemented for optimal sizing of an integrated renewable energy system-based power generation plants in India with less investment and minimum power cost. The outcome of the study reveals that the efficient use of renewable energy sources and proposal for placing a power generation plant require cautious identification of various techno-economic parameters. By considering the power crisis in India, the findings of these works are expected to assist the policymakers in the decision-making process. Particularly, this paper generates data on village-level RH availability from rice mills and subsequently potential electric power capacity for a particular region.

The practical application of renewable energies to solve current environmental problems is still under discussion today. In this article, he surveyed the biomass and biogas potential available in Entre Ríos and usable in Concepción del Uruguay. In the first, the forestry, agro-industry and in the second the organic residues of the chickens are studied. A novel contribution is presented in relation to the Energy Return On Investment for renewable generation sources in Argentina, which measures its energy profitability, through the life cycle analysis for its calculation, by measuring energy expenses in different stages. This article seeks to reveal the main data that will be used in subsequent optimization work, especially in determining the energy profitability of generators and the optimization of distributed generation in medium voltage.
Renewable sources are closely linked to the natural conditions of each region and locality, their availability is very varied from one site to another, being important the evaluation of the potential of these resources, in order to determine their best use under economically advantageous conditions. These constitute the equivalent fuel for the operation of the technologies that exploit them, their quantity and quality; It also depends on the energy performance and reliability of the technology systems that employ them. An analysis of the importance of the determination of the regionalization of the RES is presented, showing the energy, economic and environmental impacts that can be estimated in specific regions and localities. For this, the studies carried out in the province of La Habana and in the municipality of San Luis in the province of Santiago de Cuba are presented as practical examples of a territorial planning, considering the conditions of each locality. The results are shown using the Geographic Information System (GIS). The contribution obtained allows the preliminary knowledge of the renewable potential (solar, wind, water and biomass), which can be considered for a regionalization of the planning with renewable energy sources, in order to reach the goals of sustainable development, based on the search Of energy solutions at the Community level.
Spanish energy roadmap to 2020: Socioeconomic implications of renewable targets
Energy, 2011
The European Union has established challenging targets for the share of renewable energies to be achieved by 2020; for Spain, 20% of the final energy consumption must be from renewable sources at such time. The aim of this paper is the analysis of the consequences for the electricity sector (in terms of excess cost of electricity, investment requirements, land occupation, CO 2 emissions and overcapacity of conventional power) of several possibilities to comply with the desired targets. Scenarios are created from different hypotheses for energy demand, biofuel share in final energy in transport, contribution of renewables for heating and cooling, renewable electricity generation (generation mix, deployment rate, learning curves, land availability) and conventional power generation (lifetime of current installations, committed deployment, fossil fuel costs and CO 2 emissions cost). A key input in the estimations presented is the technical potential and the cost of electricity from renewable sources, which have been estimated in previous, detailed studies by the present authors using a methodology based on a GIS (Geographical Information System) and high resolution meteorological data. Depending on the scenario, the attainment of the targets will lead to an increase in the cost of electricity from 19% to 37% with respect to 2007.
Current state and optimal development of the renewable electricity generation mix in Spain
Renewable Energy, 2018
The aim of this study is first to make a critical evaluation of the present situation of the power system in Spain making use of the latest available data. The other main objective is to make an analysis of the optimal mix for the intensive deployment of variable renewable energies (VRES). The VRES considered are wind, solar photovoltaics (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP), which by 2030 should provide all together about 45e50% of the total electricity demand in order to comply with the European Union (EU) Directives and the Paris 2016 Climate Agreements. As we will show, these levels of VRES would create important problems of surplus and needed backup energies, especially in the lack of sufficient electricity storage facilities. Therefore, it will be needed during the transition period the parallel use of fossil conventional backup plants, with their corresponding associated emissions. By applying linear programming optimization techniques we try in this paper to make optimal the large deployment of VRES. By "optimal" we mean that the shares of VRES would simultaneously minimize both the backup and the surplus power components for the whole set of hours (8760) in the year. For the most viable Scenario to be implemented around 2030, we have also studied the statistical distribution of slacks (surpluses and backups) so that the demand could always be covered, providing a valuable data for the provision of additional storage. In summary this scenario assumes a large reduction of coal power plants, the continuation of present nuclear power plants and the preservation of combined cycle power plants which will be used for backup due to their high flexibility and ramping speed.
Proposal for the use of renewable energy in the La Rioja autonomous community (LRAC) (Spain)
Renewable Energy, 2000
Renewable energy represents, approximately, only 10% of the ®nal energy consumption for the Autonomous Community of La Rioja. Nevertheless great use is made of it, with a series of exceptional bene®ts such as: the decrease in external energy dependence; the boost to local and regional component manufacturing industries; the promotion of regional engineering and consulting services specialized in the use of renewable energy; the development of R&D; the decrease in impact from electricity production and transformation; the increase in the level of services for the rural population; the creation of employment; etc.
