Nursing & Health Sciences
In this descriptive cross-sectional study, we examined awareness of breast cancer among Indonesian women at moderate-to high-risk of developing breast cancer. Data were obtained from 87 eligible participants using the Modified Breast Cancer Awareness Measure. The International Breast Cancer Intervention Study model was used to identify women at moderate-to-high risk of developing breast cancer. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results showed that none of the participants had knowledge of age-related risk (0%). Other domains that indicated low awareness were knowledge of lifetime risk (31%), followed by knowledge of risk factors, in particular the item regarding menstruation at an early age (12.6%). These results indicated that increasing awareness of breast cancer risks is highly needed, in particular among women at moderate-to-high risk of developing breast cancer in Indonesia.

Introduction: Many studies had been carried out on breast cancer awareness and the practice of breast self-examination (BSE). However, few studies had been conducted on the level of knowledge of breast cancer and the adoption of BSE amongst female undergraduate students. Even though younger women have lower breast cancer incidence but younger women tend to have more aggressive cancer type and possibly present breast cancer at an advanced stage. Therefore, it is best to start BSE at an early age especially in the high-risk group because it will help in early detection of breast cancer. As such, this study aims to ascertain the level of knowledge of breast cancer and stage of adoption of breast self-examination (BSE) among female undergraduate students of the Kulliyyah of Allied Health Sciences (KAHS), International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) Kuantan, Pahang. Background: Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of death among women. The potential risk factor is older age, however, the prevalence at a young age is recently increased. Unfortunately, young women show a poor level of knowledge about breast cancer. This study aimed to explore the knowledge and perception among female high school students about the risks of breast cancer. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from October to November 2013 in Jatinangor. Knowledge and perception toward risks of breast cancer were assessed using a validated questionnaire. Results: Most of the students (69.5%) had a poor level of knowledge about breast cancer. Furthermore, they also had a negative perception (43.2%) toward breast cancer's risks. Factor influencing their perception was family income (p=0.012) and knowledge about breast cancer (p=0.008). Conclusions: Young female high school students have low knowledge and negative perception about the risks of breast cancer. It is recommended that education about breast care and breast cancer should be given to high school female students to improve their knowledge and to early detect abnormality in their breast.
