Women entrepreneurs in and from developing countries: Evidences from the literature (original) (raw)

Female entrepreneurs coming from and operating in developing countries: A review of the literature

In 2010, more than 104 million women between 18 and 64 years old were actively engaged in starting and running new business ventures; another 83 million women were running established businesses that they had started over 3½ years earlier. These data mean that 187 million out of 400 million entrepreneurs were women in the world in 2010 (GEM, 2012); even more interestingly, their number grew so rapidly by the end of the eighties in many developed and developing regions (SBO, 2007) that Brush and Cooper (2012) define female-owned businesses as one of the fastest growing entrepreneurial populations in the world. In the academic literature on entrepreneurship, the role of the gender factor appeared in the late 1970s but only recently has the role of female entrepreneurship in emerging economies and the relevance of immigrant female entrepreneurs in developed countries became visible in international journals. Due to the relevance of these two issues for economic development and the still existing gap in the systematization of both theoretical and empirical findings, this work aims at filling this gap with a systematic literature review based on rigorous criteria. Keywords: female entrepreneurship in developing countries, immigrant women entrepreneurs, systematic literature review.

Entrepreneurship is increasingly becoming the backbone of economic growth worldwide. Encouraging people to take entrepreneurial initiatives is one of the most effective ways to reduce poverty and empower people. In principle, there should be no difference between men and women. In practice, various factors restrict the ability of women to reach their full potential. Thus, this paper has addressed the issue of female entrepreneurship with special emphasis on the sociocultural context of developing countries. It has highlighted the barriers to women’s entrepreneurship and critical issues of women’s entrepreneurship in rural areas. A qualitative research approach was adopted to fulfill the research objectives. Study findings show that females are involved in trade, commerce, household factories, and agricultural activities. Also, they are dedicated, courageous, and bold to take risks to establish their businesses. Although they face social pressures to manage their household activities efficiently, they remain vigilant to work and become independent. Furthermore, the study show that different countries have various institutional characteristics which help to explain why some nations and ethnic groups are more entrepreneurial than others. Therefore, in a developing country, to be or not to be a woman entrepreneur is affected by various institutional aspects.
