Fieldwork for Students in Tourism Programmes: Is it more Tourism than Learning?
This paper aims to provide a general understanding and insight of undergraduate students' thinking and feeling about the stationary fieldwork experiences they attended. In order to do so, at the end of the residential field course organized in the summer of 2019, within a complex which works under the aegis of Babeș-Bolyai University, the subjects were asked to rate several aspects of their participation and involvement degree and to express their opinion about it. After research into motivation and satisfaction related to the same topic that showed that, above all, qualitative interaction is the key factor in choosing and enjoying fieldwork, our attention has moved towards assessing firstly students̕ perception of the effectiveness of teaching and learning methods and, secondly, students̕ attitude toward learning environment resources and infrastructure. Data collection and analysis processes employed both quantitative and qualitative methods, from a Likert scale survey questions to a focus group discussion. The latter highlighted not only the importance of engaging students in all sorts of participatory activities rather than in observational ones, but also the highest appreciation for the location in terms of geographical features of topography and biogeographic resources inside the complex, whose value was able to overcome all other compared services and facilities.

Tourism is one of the most accessible and widespread physical activities used for physical and intellectual improvement, promoting health and enhancing the overall working capacity. Any willing individual without serious deviations in their health status can participate, regardless of their physical fitness level. Tourism education is widely practiced in the educational curriculum of physical education and sports as an addition to the main program of study and as modular education. The various forms of tourism include theoretical and practical classes, which can be held not only in nature, but also, in certain cases, in the gym hall or the school's surrounding area. The physical activities included in tourism influence and complement the physical activities included in the main program of study (track-and-field athletics, sports games and gymnastics) and vice versa.
Exemplary practices in field trips to natural environments

In light of the literature that deals with challenges of outdoor education, this paper presents exemplary practices in field trips to natural environments. We offer an analysis of 62 field trips of students in grades 4-8 (age 10-14), guided by professional guides or by teachers. In aiming at elucidating the qualities of exemplary fieldtrips, we analyze five examples of high quality field trips. Each of the five was exemplary in several aspects, but not necessarily in all. Data were collected though observations and interviews with teachers, guides and students. Interpretative analysis was used in addition to an analytic framework that we developed previously. In general, we stress that good collaboration between the guide and the teacher, who enact active learning and psychomotor activity, and make much use of the environment for student exploration and interaction, are the key to high quality outdoor learning experiences. We provide several examples to support this claim. Other aspects we highlight are a sense of freedom, time and opportunity to enjoy nature and the opportunities to have meaningful social interactions. In light of the prevalent critique toward current outdoor education practice, we suggest the research community learn from good practices.

Teaching tourism at high school level has remained a challenge in rural KwaZulu-Natal high schools mainly due to inadequately trained teachers, a shortage of resources, lack of exposure to the tourism industry for both rural learners and teachers and the low perception of the subject due to its misunderstood importance towards university entrance. The paper investigated the viewpoints of the learner of the value of fieldtrips in the teaching and learning of tourism at a high school level. The theories underpinning the study were experiential learning and the multiple intelligences which respectively focus on instrumentalism of learning and provision of opportunities to engage all learners at least some of the time. This study aimed to find out the ways in which teachers’ and students’ agency emerge in outdoor learning and in which ways students’ agentic engagement could be promoted and supported. Outdoor learning is defined here as cognitive, emotional, social, physical and educational processes designed for and taking place in natural contexts. The study was conducted during a three-day hiking course taking place in the wilderness of Finnish Lapland. The participants were 21 upper elementary students and their two teachers. The research data consists of qualitative interviews recorded during the hiking trip, audio-recorded field notes and students’ digital diaries. The data were analyzed qualitatively. The findings indicate four aspects of students’ agentic engagement, which are promoted through teachers’ agency emerging through evoking past experiences, future orientations and being closely engaged with the present. The results provide evidence to support developing outdoor learning pedagogies particularly in terms of promoting generic skill development, students’ sense of agency and self-directed learning in authentic settings

This study examined participants' perceptions of learning, critical elements, and lasting impacts of their wilderness expeditions. Fifty-seven students, who completed a for-credit wilderness canoe expedition between 1993 and 2007 at the Augustana Campus, University of Alberta, participated in the investigation. Perceived learning most commonly related to nature and place appreciation, outdoor skills, group living, and self-awareness. Critical elements for learning were the experiential approach, group living, and nature and place immersion. In terms of lasting impacts of the expedition, perceived learning had changed since the expedition for 88% of students, especially in the areas of self-awareness, group living, and greater appreciation of the experience, due to reflection and the passage of time. Furthermore, the expedition had a lasting impact on students' personal and professional lives, especially related to life experience, nature appreciation, confidence, and skill development. The findings support the notion that wilderness educational expeditions can provide significant and long-lasting learning (uniquely in the area of nature and place appreciation). Finally, because of the nature of educational expeditions, they lend themselves to the implementation of sound experiential pedagogical practices that promote active, engaged, and relevant learning.
This study investigated the motivational and emotional experience of an experienced outdoor activity participant during a three-day guided adventure trek in Colca Canyon, Peru. The research adopted a qualitative autoethnographic approach which provided unique data in the form of diary entries, experiential diagrams, field notes and email content. An established theoretical model (reversal theory) was used to analyse dynamic psychological states and emotions that occurred in relation to changing circumstances during the trek. Overall, the data indicated increased positive motivational experience over the course of the adventure trek. Achieving trekking goals, experiencing scenery, views and the natural environment, and social interaction with other trekkers, guides and local people were key aspects found to positively influence the subjective outdoor leisure experience. The present autoethnographic study provided an in-depth prospective account of the participant’s increasingly pleasant positive experience as the trek advanced.

Despite the recognized positive effects attributed to outdoor adventure education programs, few studies have examined the mechanisms involved therein, particularly with regard to factors that influence group process. The purpose of this qualitative research was to examine an outdoor adventure education program utilizing Yalom's helping factors in relationship to established groupwork intervention stages. Semistructured interviews were conducted with 23 individuals who participated in an 18-day outdoor adventure expedition. Findings shared include the conditions and group stages that helping factors emerge and suggest the relevance of offering adventure-based programs in nature settings for effective groupwork.
