The beauty of dying: A vision of heaven the relationship with death in medieval Serbian literatureDeath presents a major topic in the medieval Serbian literature, the manner of dying being crucial for gaining eternal life. There are three stages in the schematized description of death: announcement, transition and vision of what the hero may expect in eternal life. At each stage there are images and symbols of the world beyond that present death as something pleasant and desirable. In terms of death, it is Saint Simeon as the founder of the dynasty of Nemanjici and the first national saint and Czar Lazar Hrebeljanovic that drew most of the attention, the former being described by four authors in five pieces of work, the latter due to his heroic end against the infidels in the Battle of Kosovo. It is not long before the three-stage scheme is disturbed in early hagiographies, with the 13th and 14th century heroes embracing death in most cases there are saints in question, whereas it i...

The motif of death in Serbian modernist novels: Newcomers by Milutin UskokovićThis paper discusses the way the motif of death is shaped in the novel Newcomers by Milutin Uskoković, whose narrative strategies represent well the poetics of prose texts from the beginning of the 20th century. Analysis is conducted based on the conclusions of classical, but also postclassical specifically, cognitive narratology. The central point of this research is the domination of internal focalization which, by changing the narrator’s position, significantly changes the position and function of the main character. All other features of the text derive precisely from creating this kind of narrative situation. A short history of reading this text is provided within the study of narrative procedures that shaped the motif of death in the aforementioned novel. This should point towards a new shift in its interpretation, which was enabled by the achievements of contemporary theory of literature. Мотив сме...

TI ME OF/WITHOUT DE ATH NOTIONS OF D ATH IN SER BIA IN XIX-XX CENTURIES - Sum mary - The book „Time of/without death. Notions of death in Serbia in XIX-XX centuries“ is an attempt to study and interpret local specificities in comprehending the phenomenon of death in a comprehensive yet compressed manner, but also in the manner in which global civilization- related changes were reflected through them. Even though timelines for individual topics treated in the book range from the period of early Christianity and Middle Ages via modern times to the contemporary period, the primary aim of the research was not to present historic development of ideas relating to the phenomenon of death. The course of development of these ideas was used to explain the present moment, i. e. attitudes and practices observed in Serbian society at the end of XX and beginning of XXI century. The very title of the book originated from the observation that the generally accepted attitude towards the modern society, as the one characterized by suppressing of thinking, speaking, and ideas of death to the margins of reality is opposed by the same reality in which images of death increasingly multiply.

The paper therefore provides a more detailed insight into the opinions and positions of literary critics who have dealt with this novel, i.e. it provides abundant information, documented with quotations from the very critical texts, which could be useful to both the teacher and students when they study this novel in the classroom. The problem of defining this novel as a historical novel, the attitude to history and the treatment of history in the novel, the use and function of documents, the characters, the relationship between ”historical” and ”non-historical” characters in the novel’s structure, the collective character of the Serbian people, the relationship between the typical and the individual, the peculiarities of the artistic procedure, the position of the narrator, composition, the writer’s creative motives, senses and meaning of procedures used in the final text – these represent some of the relevant interests of critics in relation to Ćosić’s The Time of Death. If the teacher is familiar with their interpretations, he or she will have fewer problems conceiving, and implementing (along with the students), the so-called collective interpretation of the novel, where the teacher will find it easier to provide its reliable and scientifically-grounded interpretation in the classroom.
