Students' Perception of the Personal Characteristics of Ideal Teacher (I). Pilot Study

Acta Didactica Napocensia, 2014

The current study presents part of the results of a pilot study that aimed the development of a profile for a teacher that is appreciated by school and university students. For the investigation, a 40 items questionnaire based on literature was used. The questionnaire was applied to 76 subjects (school and undergraduate students). The results highlight few differences between the school and the university students' opinions regarding the personal and professional characteristics of the teacher. The experience, the good intention, the big amount of knowledge and the capacity of admitting a mistake are some of the qualities valued by the vast majority of the subjects while the superiority attitude of a teacher generates differences between school and university students, the school students admitting this attitude in a higher percentage than university students. The results of this study suggest a necessity for educating teachers so that they fit the expectations of their students.

Understanding the Characteristics of Effective Professors: The Student’s Perspective

Journal of Marketing for Higher Education, 2010

Increasingly, higher education institutions are realising that higher education could be regarded as a business-like service industry and they are beginning to focus more on meeting or even exceeding the needs of their students. Recent research findings suggest that the factors that create student satisfaction with teaching (‘teaching satisfiers’) may be qualitatively differently from the factors that create dissatisfaction with teaching. Thus, this research uses the Kano methodology to reveal the characteristics of professors that students take for granted (‘Must-be factors’) and that have the potential to delight them (‘Excitement factors’). Kano questionnaires containing 19 attributes of effective professors taken from previous studies and focus group discussions were handed out in two marketing courses to 63 postgraduate students enrolled in a service marketing course. The Kano results corroborate previous US findings that revealed the importance of personality in general and support studies that stress the importance of professors creating rapport with their students in particular.

A cross-cultural investigation of students' preferences for lecturers' personalities in Britain, Malaysia and the United States

Learning and Individual Differences, 2007

This study examined students' preferences for lecturers' personalities on three continents. Two-hundred and 35 university students in Malaysia, 347 university students in Britain and 139 university students in the United States provided ratings of 30 desirable and undesirable lecturer trait characteristics, which were coded into an internally reliable Big Five taxonomy. Descriptive statistics showed that, overall, students in all three settings tended to prefer Conscientious, Open, Stable and Agreeable lecturers. Further analysis showed that, overall, Malaysian students provided higher ratings for all high order traits of the Big Five than either British or American students. There were numerous gender and national differences but the latter was more a function of methodological artefacts. Educational and vocational implications are considered in conclusion.

Proceedings of the 4th International Conference on Higher Education Advances (HEAd'18), 2018

Factores que afectan a la evaluación del profesorado: la interacción entre el género, el curso y la rama de conocimiento. Un estudio de la Universidad de Salamanca

Arbor-ciencia Pensamiento Y Cultura, 2022

This study deals with how a teacher's gender influences the evaluation that students make of his or her effectiveness as an instructor. The study is based on an analysis of the responses given in a questionnaire on the perception that students have of their teachers. The survey is given to students at the University of Salamanca at the end of each semester. The total sample consists of 80485 answers. Results show that gender bias is magnified in combination with course level and field of study. They also show a significant effect in relation to the professor's academic rank, with full professors being more negatively evaluated than professors in lower academic rank. The field of knowledge also has a bearing on the results, with female teachers receiving worse evaluations in those fields considered to be feminine

What Students Want: A Study of Desirable Teacher Characteristics as Perceived by Their Students

2016

The purpose of this research was to investigate student preferences and characteristics exhibited by their teachers. A comparison of these opinions was also conducted based on students' sex, age and academic achievement. The results of this study will provide a guide for universities to assist teachers to improve the quality of their teaching. A sample group of 79 students studying in a Faculty of Information Technology and Communication at a Thai university were selected using simple random sampling techniques. The research used questionnaire and interview techniques which were designed to determine participants' attitudes using a five point Likert scale with an overall reliability value of 0.938. Descriptive statistical analysis included percentage, mean and standard deviation. Findings indicate that students prefer teachers who are approachable, treat them with respect, are obviously well prepared, communicate well and exhibit a teaching style that students find easy to understand. Interestingly, student preferences were influenced by sex and age, but there was no statistical significance related to student academic achievement. This research clearly indicates that teachers who are approachable, have good communication skills, and are well prepared are more valued by students. Students are more likely to attend lectures and engage with these teachers and therefore be more successful at university.
