Assessment of Nutritional Status and Dietary Habits of Undergraduate Students from Well to Do Families in Hyderabad City, India

Objectives: This study is undertaken to assess the nutritional status of young adults in urban area of Hyderabad, India. Nutritional intake and dietary adequacy of essential nutrients among the undergraduate students from well to do families were also assessed. Methodology: involved anthropometric measurements (Height, weight, BMI and waist to hip ratio) of 61 young women belonging to well to do families were taken. A preset questionnaire was also given to all participants to know about family & educational background, dietary habits and preferences. 24hour dietary recall taken to get information related to nutrient adequacy in the diet of the participants. Discussion and results: Result from anthropometric data collected indicated only 55% participants were having normal weight for age, whereas 28.57% and 1.5 % students were identified with I degree and II degree of undernourishment respectively. Nutritional status and dietary pattern of female students from North East states India residing in Chennai

Nutritional status of young women plays an important role in human life. This study was undertaken to assess the nutritional status and dietary pattern of female students from North East states India residing in Chennai. A questionnaire was used to elicit information on the socio-demographic profile, physical activity pattern, family medical history, food habits, dietary intake and present nutritional status. Anthropometric measurements such as height, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, hip circumference and waist to hip ratio were recorded for all the subjects. Further biochemical test including hemoglobin levels and blood pressure were recorded. Clinical assessment was conducted to record the clinical symptoms of nutritional deficiencies. Dietary assessment consisted of a food frequency questionnaire and twenty four hour dietary recall and a usual dietary intake to assess the general dietary pattern were recorded. Results of the study indicate that there was no population based difference in mean height, body weight, and Body Mass Index (BMI) of the subjects. Hemoglobin level and blood pressure of the subjects were found to be normal. There were no major clinical symptoms present to the subjects. It was found that the mean intake of nutrients such as energy, protein, and carbohydrate, calcium, iron and folic intake of subjects was found to be below the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowances).

COLLEGE STUDENTS' EATING HABITS AND THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: A STUDY AMONG THE COLLEGE STUDENTS OF GOALPARA DISTRICT OF ASSAM

College life provides an opportunity and independency to the students in selecting food items of their own choices. The liberty of taking decision of selecting food items from a variety of food options may often placed them at a risk of making poor food habits that can cause them significant health problems in future. The purpose of the present quantitative study was to bring awareness across college the campuses and to improve the knowledge of dietary behaviours of the students through proper investigation of college students' eating habits and their knowledge about nutritional requirements for health. Data were collected from the students of four colleges of Goalpara district of Assam, India through a self-administered survey questionnaire. Result showed that majority of undergraduate students eats at college dining facilities with limited healthy food options. More than 68 percent of the participants often ate traditional diet mostly consisting of rice, vegetables and pulses at home. However, contrary to home, more than 60 percent of the participants had shown their leniency towards fast and processed food, whereas little above 10 percent of the participants had the habits of eating traditional food items. The study has found taste preference, cost of the food, availability of the food items in the college canteen or nearby hotels and restaurants are the major causes responsible for their selection of fast foods. The statement with which the participants agreed most strongly was that fast food contains unhealthy additives. The statement with which participants showed the least level of agreement was that exercise is more important than the type of food they eat. Findings of this study indicate the need for an intervention by college authority and government to ensure and monitor the nutritive quality of the food items in the college campus.

Impact of Dietary Habits on Health Status of College Going Students in Punjab

Purpose of the study: The core objective of this study was to analyze the effect of dietary habits on the health status of college-going students. Methodology: Two districts of Punjab were selected randomly namely Faisalabad and Rahim Yar Khan. Two public sector colleges were selected purposively from each district i.e. one male and one female keeping in mind low strength and high strength were selected. The population of these colleges was 5372 while the sample size was 189. A well-structured questionnaire was developed on a google form. Collected data were processed through SPSS software for standard deviation, frequency, mean, and weighted score, and rank order. ASSESSMENT OF THE NUTRITIONAL BEHAVIOUR AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS-A SURVEY

Objective: To assess the nutritional behaviour among college students. Methods: A prospective observational survey was conducted randomly among college students in Guntur. A self-administered data collection form was designed to understand the nutritional behaviour of the subjects. Results: A total of 300 subjects were included in the study, among them 225(75%) were females and 75(25%) were males. The survey revealed that most of them skipped their meals. A majority of 184(61.33%) students opted for high-fat diet and 268(89.33%) opted for starch-rich foods. A total of 222(74%) students usually eat four different varieties of vegetables but only 71(23.66%) of them eat fruits in each week. Conclusion: From this study, it was evident that majority of students have poor dietary habits. Lack of awareness on balanced diet and due to their busy schedules, teenagers were not maintaining a proper diet. This could be reduced by bringing minimum awareness on dietary habits to them. Taking proper diet is very essential to reduce the risk of diseases in future and to improve nourishment.

DIETARY PATTERN OF COLLEGE GOING ADOLESCENTS ( 17-19 YEARS) IN URBAN AREA OF BELAGAVI

Introduction: In India, poor eating habits are a major public health concern among college students who experience transition into university life, during which they are exposed to stress and lack of time. Objective: To assess the dietary pattern among college going adolescents. Methodology: Cross-sectional study conducted among 400 college going adolescents (17-19 years ) residing in urban area of Belagavi. Diet ( consumption pattern ), frequency of meals, type of meal, vegetables and fruits consumption, daily water intake, consumption of fast food, etc. were assessed using pre-designed and pre-tested questionnaire. Results: Mean calorie consumption among boys was 1472 ±417 Kcal and in girls was 1360 ± 380 Kcal. 45.5% of boys and 51.5% of girls were underweight. Majority had regular meals and breakfast (72% &, 80.8% respectively ). 46.8% consumed fruits less than three times per week, 58% had fried food twice or more per week and 40.5% consumed less than 2 liters of water a day. Conclusions: Most of the students in this study had healthy eating habits except in their consumption of fruits, water intake and consumption of fried food. A study of this type will help to provide nutrition education on healthy food habits and life styles which will help college students bridge the gap between knowledge and practice of dietary pattern.

Dietary patterns among students of health sciences and its association with morbidity in a private medical university of coastal Karnataka: a cross-sectional study

Assessment of Demographic-Socioeconomic Status and Food Habits among College Going Students of Asansol, West Bengal

This study was evaluated demographic-socioeconomic status and food habits among the college going students of Asansol, West Bengal. A questionnaire survey was conducted on 190 students (rural and urban areas) and data were gathered. Frequency distribution of demographic and socioeconomic status and food habits was determined. The findings indicated the age groups of about 69.47% of ≥ 20 years and about 30.53% of <20 years. As per gender distribution maximum females (77.89%). For religion distribution, majority of participants (146, 76.84%) were Hindu. Regarding castes distribution, maximum were general castes (59.47%) and minimum (40.53%) were other castes. For family income/month (INR) distribution, majority of participants (65.79%) declared <50000 INR. Food habits revealed that majority of participants (78.95%) were non-vegetarian while about 21.05% were vegetarian. Majority of participants (92.11%) were taken home made food while only 7.89% were taken junk food. Maximum participants (65.79%) did not skip the breakfast while about 34.21% were reported to skip breakfast. In conclusion, the intension of junk food intake was observed lower but maximum students were taken non-vegetarian food. Still, in this study the prevalence of unhealthy food intake is negligible.

NUTRITIONAL PROFILE OF MEDICAL STUDENTS OF TRIPURA AND ITS IMPACT ON THEIR HEALTH

Background: Everybody needs a wide range of nutrients to lead a healthy and active life and these are derived through the diet they consume daily. Good nutrition is a basic component of health. The present paper deals with the Nutritional Profile of Medical Students of AGMC, Agartala. Methods: A total of 200 undergraduate medical students (64% males and 36% females) with mean age 20.76(±SD 1.20) years participated in this study. Participants completed a set of questionnaire and pass multiple 24h diet recall. The energy and selected nutrient contents of the food items of medical students constitute sedentary worker group based on the RDA (2010) for Indians by National Institution of Nutrition, Hyderabad. Data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 21). Results: The findings depict that maximum number of 1st year (56.0%) and 2nd year (58.0%) students have energy consumption less than RDA while in 3rd and 4th year students, the percentage having energy consumption greater than RDA was on the high side. In total, the energy consumption of forty five percent of students was found to be less than normal as per RDA. Under-weight males and females consumed only 73.33% and 68.48% vegetables respectively compared to RDA standards. In the present study group in total, the vegetable intake was found to be 68.32% in males and 65.78% in females as compared to RDA standards. Conclusions: The nutritional status of the students of this college was not excellent.

Dietary Habit of Medical Students- a Study Among the Students of a Health University in Eastern India

BACKGROUND Diet is an important pillar of good health. A healthy diet is essential for every student, especially for medical students, as they are the budding doctors. Knowledge about healthy diet is essential for them as they are the one who guide their patients as well as the society about the importance of good eating habits. Aim-To determine the dietary habits of medical students. MATERIALS AND METHODS A cross-sectional study was conducted among the medical students of a health university of Eastern India. The study included 278 students. A questionnaire was composed which contained questions regarding their dietary habits. Data collected was tabulated and analysed. RESULTS It was found that 51.3% male and 42.9% female students were taking daily breakfast. 82.9% of male and 61.9% of female students were taking regular meals and rest having irregular meals. Most of the male (53.9%) and female (47.6%) students were habituated to consume snacks in fast food centre. Other aspects of their diet pattern were also discussed. CONCLUSION The study showed that most of the students have healthy dietary habits with some lacunae present. The different factors responsible for it were determined. A better dietary knowledge is necessary for the students.
