Dental Prosthetic Status and Prosthetic Needs of the Institutionalized Elderly Living in Geriatric Homes in Hyderabad: A Pilot Study

Introduction To promote oral health among the elderly, we need to know their prosthetic status and prosthetic need. Hence, a survey of prosthetic status and need of elderly inmates of geriatric homes in Hyderabad was done. Materials and methods A cross-sectional study was undertaken, and 174 subjects aged 60 years and above were examined of which 103 were male and 71 were female (59.2% males and 40.8% females). The oral examination of the study subjects was carried out using basic oral health surveys, WHO 1997 criteria. Results Majority of the subjects, 73 (70.8%) males and 53 (74.6%) females had no prosthesis. Only 4.6% had complete dentures and 21.1% had removable partial dentures and 10.9% had single/multiple bridges. Public Health Dentistry is a speciality which is targeted towards the larger benefit of community and society. Dental health surveys in specific population groups should be planned adequately and the data should be analyzed in such a way so that it may help in making strategies for the intervention to improve the existing status. This could be only done with the help of proper planning, analysis and interpretation of a sample survey. The present study highlights the research design, statistical and inferential errors in a published work of public health dentistry in order to bring about the common mistakes and errors made. The renewed suggested approach helps in interpreting the results in a better way and makes them objective-oriented.

Prosthetic Status and Prosthetic Needs of Institutionalized Elderly People in Jodhpur City, Rajasthan, India

Introduction: Common oral health problems in elderly populations include periodontal diseases, dental caries, edentulism, xerostomia, and wasting diseases. Poor oral health and loss of teeth affects dietary intake, nutritional status and also compromise the general health. In this study, the aim was to assess the prosthetic status and prosthetic needs of the institutionalized elderly people in Jodhpur city. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional survey study of 66 inmates living in an old age home was included. A modified WHO proforma was administered to obtain information. One-way ANOVA was used to identify the association of prosthetic status and needs with sex, chronic diseases, oral hygiene practices, adverse habits, dental visit, duration of stay, education, and source of financial assistance. Results: Among institutionalized elderly people, 11 were wearing partial denture and 9 were having full removable denture. 54 people had edentulous space and were having healthy denture bearing tissues. Upper full prosthesis was required in 19 elderly people while 16 people required lower full prosthesis. Age, chronic diseases, oral hygiene practices, adverse habit, dental visit, duration of living, education status, source of financial assistance were found to be significantly associated with prosthetic status and needs. Conclusion: The oral health of institutionalized elderly people in Jodhpur is poor. Study findings contribute to the need for continued dental care.

Prosthetic Status and Prosthetic Needs among Institutionalized Geriatric Individuals in Nashik City, Maharashtra: A Descriptive Study

Objectives A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among institutionalized geriatric individuals in Nashik city, Maharashtra, to assess their prosthetic status and needs. Materials and methods The oral examination of the study subjects was carried out using Basic Oral Health Surveys, WHO 1997 criteria. Results A total of 160 individuals were included in the study of which 40 were females and 120 were males. A total of 55 (34.37%) study participants had some prosthesis at the time of examination, whereas 136 (85%) were in need of prosthesis. A total of 49 subjects (30.62%) needed complete dentures in both jaws. Around 26 (16.25%) of the subjects needed combination prosthesis. AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the relation between conventional prosthetic status and quality of life of a 60-75 year old patients by using the GHOAI MATERIALS AND METHODS: One seventy six old patients who reported in VDCH Garhwa for their prosthetic treatment includes in the study. Understanding dental status and treatment need of geriatric patients: oral health trends in an Indian population

BACKGROUND Comprehensive data on the oral health status and dental treatment needs of the elderly population in India is deficient. AIM To understand and assess the dental status and treatment needs of a geriatric population in Northern India. METHODS A cross-sectional study was undertaken in National capital of India, New Delhi, and 412 subjects aged 60 years and above was involved in this study (259 females and 153 males). An intraoral clinical examination and a questionnaire performa were performed. The treatment needs were evaluated independently of the patient's request based on their dental and prosthetic status. RESULTS he prevalence of edentulism was 75%, with gender difference (69% of the men and 81% of the women). Eighty percent wore removable dentures, 10% had natural teeth only, and 10% had neither prostheses nor natural teeth. Assessment of Prosthetic Status and Oral Frailty among The Geriatric Population Residing in Old Age Homes of Bhubaneswar City-a Cross Sectional Study

Objective: The aim of this study was to assess the prosthetic status and oral frailty of the elderly population residing in old age homes of Bhubaneswar city. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional questionnaire study was conducted among 310 geriatric patients aged 60 years and above residing in old age homes of Bhubaneswar city. Data collection was done using a modified World Health Organization (WHO) 1997 and oral frailty index 8. Descriptive statistics, chi-square test, Pearsons correlation and multinomial logistic regression were used. Results: The mean age of the study population was 66.72±6.86 years. Geriatric oral health predicaments in New Delhi, India

The aim of the present study was to analyze geriatric oral health predicaments in India. Specifically, to assess the oral health status and treatment needs among the geriatric population attending health camps in New Delhi, Northern India. Methods: The sample size for the cross-sectional study comprised of 248 elderly participants aged 60 years having attended the health checkup camps organized in New Delhi, India. The community periodontal index was used for assessment of periodontal disease. The World Health Organization's criterion was used for detection of dentition status and treatment needs. The χ 2-test was used to compare between categorical variables. The Mann-Whitney U-test was used to compare between two groups for quantitative variables. Regression analysis was carried out to identify the factors associated with dental caries and periodontal disease status. Results: The mean number of affected sextants with the highest community periodontal index score of 4 was 3.54 ± 2.45. Mean decayed, missing and filled teeth score of 16.39 ± 8.97 was recorded among the elderly. Prosthetic need was noted among 206 (83.1%) participants. Age and literacy status contributed to 27% and 12% of the variance respectively in the decayed, missing and filled teeth model. (P < 0.001) Major contributory factors in the periodontal disease model for the 37%, 11% and 11% variance were age, sex and tobacco consumption (P < 0.001). Conclusion: Two striking features of the study were the high levels of unmet prosthetic needs and the extremely low utilization of dental care. There is an urgent necessity to resolve the high burden of unmet prosthetic need among the aged in India.

The objective of this study is to know and describe socio-demographic characteristics, care in conservation, and type of limitation or interference from the use of dental prostheses. This is a descriptive transversal study conducted with 167 elderly patients, dental prosthesis wearers, in an area covered by the Family Health Program of a municipality of Minas Gerais/Brazil. Data collection was performed at home or at the health unit. The results showed higher frequencies for age range 60|-70 years old (71.9%), incomplete primary education (64.1%), earning a minimum wage (58.5%) and making use of prostheses of 20|-40 years (49.7%). Most have prosthesis in inadequate conditions (70.1%), but perform proper hygiene (87.4%), 40% complain of discomfort, 60% have already switched prosthesis and 75% did not receive any information about prosthesis maintenance.
