Traditionelle und moderne Mobilität auf Atollinseln: Zur räumlichen Orientierung, Navigation, Bootsbau und Migration in Mikronesien (original) (raw)
Mitteilungen Der Anthropologischen Gesellschaft in Wien, 2003
Abstract
The A. highlights the extreme conditions, Pacific Islanders and especially people from Micronesia have to face in an environmentally hostile area. Special forms of adaptation visible in concepts of space, orientation, navigation, boat building and migration are discussed. Traditional knowledge, best recognized in the Marshallese navigation charts and the Eastern Micronesian outrigger boats, is described to explain the people's close link to the sea and their capability to cross long distances over open sea. This sense of mobility continues in present times where a great number of people are overseas as working migrants. Many of them work again on ships.
