State is presented. The study was carried out in four selected secondary schools and colleges with a total population of seven hundred and sixty students and ten librarians using random sampling method. Questionnaire was the instrument used to collect the data from respondents. The data was analyzed using statistical package for the social science and presented in tables with frequency counts and percentage. The study revealed that school libraries were not utilized effectively by students due to inadequate resources, poor funding and lack of adequate provision for school library development.
Student Use of the Library: A Case Study at Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana, Nigeria
The study examined the use of the library by students at the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic. A combined quantitative and qualitative approach using the case study design was adopted for the study. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 200 students from each of the five faculties of the Polytechnic, totaling 1,000 students, and 15 library and school staff. A survey questionnaire developed by the researchers was employed to determine the use of the library while a face-to-face interview was conducted to gathered data from library and school staff. The reliability co-efficient of the questionnaire via Cronbach Alpha returns an r = 0.87. Four research questions were developed to guide the study. The findings show that more than half of the library users at the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic visit the library once a day. They use the library to read, to borrow books, and to make photocopies. Students were satisfied with the library collections and services but not with electronic resources. As the library is neither networked nor connected to the Internet, students usually patronize the cyber cafe close to their school as an alternative.

School libraries are the backbones of functional education; without which academic excellence may not be achieved. Aside educational achievements, school library is essential for literacy, social, economic and cultural development of a nation. This study investigates the private school libraries at Ado-Odo, LGA, in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. A survey was conducted to both teachers and students with a sample size of 515; 80% students and 20% teachers responded. The study adopted descriptive survey design. Instruments used were self-structured questionnaire, interview and observations. The findings among others; show that the libraries lack up-to-date facilities; four out of the ten private schools visited were without a library; while six with a library, has only one librarian. This study appraises the perception and use of the library resources by the undergraduates of Federal School of Surveying, Oyo Nigeria. It is a descriptive cross sectional survey that involved the use of a pre-tested questionnaire. The school had ensure the provision of information materials and conducive studying environment through the library, However, literature suggests that cold feet developed by some students may not encourage their use of library which could negatively affect their academic achievement. It is against this background that this study investigated the frequency of library usage, appraisal of existing library services as well as users expectations among undergraduates at the Federal School of Surveying Oyo, Nigeria. The results revealed that though the undergraduates have valid library registration, and were quite aware of existing facilities, they however, did not utilize the library fully for their research work.. Only a few gave positive response. Those who did not visit the library in the course of their research work attributed their action to a lot of factors. They however, proposed a multi-various standards and expectations for the library in order to ensure their patronage and continued interest in the library services. Their expectations includes; wireless broadband access, current books and journals, improved electricity supply, extension of library services, regular training of users among others. Recommendations were made on how to make library more relevant to the students need based on the findings of the research, these includes; extending the library length of service beyond the 6’o clock closing hour to 8’ o clock at night and inclusion of weekend services, provision of improved broadband internet access, providing a well equipped internet space within the library building, organizing regular users’ training for the clients from time to time, and procurement of more computer systems and its allied gadgets to complement the existing ones. The purpose of this study was to find out how undergraduates of Federal University Gusau, Nigeria use the library resources The descriptive survey design was used in the study. The population was 3,728 registered library users from the three faculties in Federal University Gusau Library, Nigeria. Proportionate stratified sampling technique was adopted to ensure equal participation of the subgroups (Faculties) in line with their respective population and Krejcie and Morgan (1970) formula table for determining sample size from a giving population was used. Sample population of 346 was arrived at. The instruments for data collection were Students‟ library registration record and a structured questionnaire. 346 questionnaires were distributed while 328 copies were returned and 282 was duly completed and found usable. The use of libraries among children in primary schools in Makurdi Metropolis, Benue State, Nigeria

This study investigated the use of libraries among primary school children in the public, private and missionary schools in Makurdi metropolis. Using a survey design method and structured questionnaire, data were collected from a total of 366 participants. The findings showed that generally, there was a high level of reading interest and proficiencies among the children which are good indicators of use of library resources; but a low level of volume of books read, which indicates low level of library use. The test of the three research hypotheses, revealed that (i) There was insignificant difference in interest in reading among the children based on the type of school they came from (f(2,358)=8.6.7,pc.01).(ii) There was no significant difference in reading proficiency among children from the public, private, or missionary schools (f(2,352)=0.99,p>.05) and (iii) There was significant difference in the volume/extend of reading materials among the children from the three categories of schools investigated. It was discussed and concluded that although the children reported high interest and proficiencies in reading, their low volume of reading materials indicates low use of library. It was recommended that the government and private schools should provide and encourage children to use the library frequently.

This study investigates the availability and utilization of school library resources by Secondary School (High School) Students. Eight Selected Secondary Schools in Rivers State, Nigeria were chosen based on their performance in external examinations and geographic locations. In carrying out the research, questionnaires were administered to both teachers and students of the schools. Findings revealed that school library services were either lacking or not in place in most Secondary Schools. Consequently, it was discovered that none of the secondary school met the prescribed standard for established school libraries at the secondary levels. Also in cases where spaces were provided for library, the materials in the libraries were not only scanty but poorly organized for effective library and information service delivery. It is suggested that library and school authorities should make adequate provision for school library services in Secondary Schools for improvement in the standard. Equally important is the fact that the recommended National Educational Policy on the need for secondary school libraries be made mandatory for all Secondary Schools. This has become necessary as a result of the importance of school library especially development of e-library in the life of the modern child and its immense role towards realizing the educational and millennium goals.
SCHOOL LIBRARIES: ROLES AND PROBLEMS ON THE EDUCATIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS IN NIGERIA
School libraries provide and promote quality fiction to develop and sustain in students the habit and enjoyment of reading for pleasure and to enrich students' intellectual, aesthetic, cultural and emotional growth. They serve students by providing materials to meet their various needs and encouraging reading and the use of libraries. Helping students to be information literate in this learning community is the central concern of school librarians. It is these professional librarians that are responsible for the acquisition, organization, storage, retrieval, preservation and dissemination of these information materials. The study looks at the roles of school libraries on the educational development of students in Nigeria. However , there are challenges facing the smooth operation of school libraries in Nigeria which include acquisition problem, funding, inadequate government support, staffing, etc. it is when these challenges are tackled that there will be effective services in school libraries in Nigeria.

A cross-sectional survey on human and physical environmental factors affecting students' utilization of library and information services in colleges of education libraries in Nigeria was conducted and reported in this paper. 648 students and 16 colleges of Education librarians were sampled, using a multistage simple random and purposive sampling technique. Structured questionnaires for students and college librarians' responses were used for data collection and interpretation for identification of problems. Results showed that students face human and physical environmental factors. Library use in Ghana is found to be poor, especially among junior high students. The limited use of the library mostly stems from the fact that students' decisions to utilize the library or not are largely influenced by their opinions of libraries, in addition to the availability of library resources. Perceptions people hold are very powerful because they affect how they relate to and use particular objects. However, research examining junior high school students' perceptions about libraries in Ghana is limited. The current study explores perceptions and use of library resources among 150 students selected from 2 junior high schools in Accra. Findings showed that the students use the school library very frequently, with the majority indicating usage during break time. Additionally, visiting the school library to read remains the dominant purpose of using school libraries among the students. They also reported a high level of satisfaction and a positive perception of the staff in their school library.
