Registering for attendance in education environments especially universities is a highly demanding activity as a result of increasing number of students. The attendance process normally involves circulating a paper for the students to register their names, or the lecturer calling the names and registering the students either in a paper or from PDA/PC. In the first case the students' attention may be attracted while taking the lectures and at the same time they can register for students who do not being present in the class. While in the latter case the issue of cheating in the form of registering for their friends can be solved but imaging the number of students to be from 50 and above, a great portion of the lecture time will be wasted performing this process. In this we propose a smart attendance system using NFC that will simplify the attendance process, by simply touching an attendance poster or the lecturer's NFC based mobile device in the class. Near Field Communication (NFC) is an emerging short-range wireless communication technology that offers great and varied promise in services such as payment, ticketing, gaming, crowd sourcing, voting, navigation, and many others. NFC technology enables the integration of services from a wide range of applications into one single smart phone. An Application of NFC Technology on Class Attendance Systems

Currently, the class attendance checking process of Computer Science program in Srinakharinwirot University still performs manually by calling student's name one by one. This process is impractical and such a waste of time especially in a large class. Therefore, we aim to present an alternative way for the class attendance checking by applying the wireless technology in smartphone, NFC, to help the lecturers manage their class at ease. The proposed system consisted of two modules: the NFC module and the web module. The NFC module performs on the mobile site which transfers the student's personal data from the student's smartphone to the lecturer's smartphone by tapping both phones to each other. The web module performs on the server site which contains the class attendance database. Moreover, the web module also provides class attendance application which will be used for some students who do not have NFC supported in their smartphones. All class attendant information can be represented on the web application. The proposed system will help the lecturers to reduce their time spending in class attendance process and this system can be in the other faculties.
Attendance Automation using Near Field Communication (NFC) Technology

The purpose of this paper is to develop an optimized and automated attendance system using the rapidly developing near field communication technology. The test implications of this technology suggest that a technology supported attendance supervision system can bring value for all end users, primarily serving the teachers and the parents.

Sensors-enabled Smart Attendance Systems Using NFC and RFID Technologies
Attendance system is a system that is used to track the attendance of a particular person and is applied in the industries, schools, universities or working places. The traditional way for taking attendance has drawback, which is the data of the attendance list cannot be reuse and tracking and tracing student's attendance is harder. The technology-based attendance system such as sensors and biometrics based attendance system reduced human involvement and errors. Thus in this paper, a NFC-based attendance system is presented. A comparative study between this both NFC and RFID is also discussed thoroughly, especially in terms of their architectures, functionality features, benefits and weakness. Overall, even both NFC and RFID attendance system increases the efficiency in recording attendance, NFC system is providing more conveniences and cheaper infrastructure in both operational and setup cost.
Smart Touch Attendance Management System Using NFC Tag: Improving Learning Outcomes

Given the need to maximize information technology to optimize attendance management systems, based on its apparent shortcomings, the aim of the study is to develop, test, appraise and analyze a NFC tag automated attendance system in an educational learning environment to improve learning outcomes. We used unified modeling language, PHP and Aptana Studio to develop a system based on the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. It operates at 13.56 MHz and relies on ISO14443 and ISO 18092 for low level data exchange between two NFC devices to automate attendance, which can be used by educational institutions and other organizations for efficient, effective and sustainable attendance database management. It was discovered that variables such as time, cost, and energy inherent in the use of traditional systems were not significant factors as they were optimized to add value to the organization. This work adds value to the management of organizations' processes, people and product affording them opportunity to maximize time, cost, effort and energy.

In ABSTRACT Near Field Communication Technology (NFC)-enabled attendance supervision trial was arranged at a primary school in Finland during the fall 2008. Total of 23 pupils between ages of 6 and 8 participated in the trial with an emphasis on security. Pupils marked their arrival at and departure from school by touching a smart card reader device or an NFC-enabled mobile phone with a contactless smart card. Teachers did not need to mark pupils' absences or delays in the backend system leaving thus more time for teaching and also enabling parents to receive real-time information on children's attendance. This paper analyzes the data related to the adoption and design process of a novel technology in a school setting. Information about user experience was obtained by using a variety of data collection methods. The findings were analyzed from the viewpoint of three end-user groups, namely children, parents and teachers. Children, as well as their teachers, became very fast familiar with the login/logout process, and the attendance supervision was soon integrated into their everyday school routines. Our analysis shows that a technology-supported attendance supervision system can bring value for all end-user groups.
