Pragmatics - One Developmental Ability? (original) (raw)
2021
Abstract
An experimental study in which Swedish children, at the age of 7;0, partake in four tests, examining aspects of both Pragmatic Production and Pragmatic Comprehension. In a novel test, the Audience Design test, a child needs to assess the frame of reference of their interlocutor to provide sufficient descriptions. The children will also partake in tests for Executive functions and Core language. The aim of the study is to answer the following questions, (1) Are children taking the world knowledge/reference frame of the listener into account in reference production? (2) Will measurements of a child's pragmatic production and pragmatic comprehension be correlated? (3, 4) Will measurements of a child's pragmatic production and pragmatic comprehension be explained by measurements of the child's core language skill, and executive functions respectively?
