Second home tourism in the Algarve : The perception of public sector managers

Proposal: Second home tourism has been paid attention in Portugal, and especially in the Algarve region, in recent years. It was identified as one of the strategic products in the national tourism plan. In the Algarve, the second home market is important for tourism dynamics. Objective: This study focuses on public sector managers’perception of second home tourism in the Algarve, in particular on strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats that this product brings to regional development. Methodological Design: The study uses a descriptive and exploratory approach with an online survey applied to all municipalities in the Algarve. Results: The results are helpful to understand second home tourism trajectories by presenting useful information for future strategies. Originality: We observed that economic factors directly influence strengths and threats; weaknesses are more related to social and environmental aspects, and opportunities are linked to all three dimensions, i.e.economic, social, and environmental.

Behaviours and Perceptions of Tourists and Residents of the Algarve: A Contribution to Enhancing Its Sustainable Development

International Journal of Social Science and Humanity, 2024

Literature suggests that measuring the perceptions of all stakeholders, including tourists, residents, and public and private organizations, is required to monitor the sustainable development of a tourist destination holistically and comprehensively. There is a lack of monitoring systems of those perceptions in several tourist destinations, such as the Algarve, Portugal. The main objective of this paper is to contribute to bridging this gap by measuring the perceptions and behaviours of tourists and residents of the Algarve to inform decision-makers for designing and implementing public policies to strengthen the Algarve's sustainable development. The research designed two questionnaires to measure the perceptions and behaviours of tourists and residents of the Algarve. Both questionnaires were based on a previously developed assessment model to monitor the Algarve's sustainable development among four dimensions: economic, socio-cultural, environmental, and destination management. The results of these two surveys will support decision-makers in designing measures for more sustainable tourism development, considering both tourists' behaviours and residents' perceptions of the tourism impacts in the Algarve.

The Role of Residents and Their Perceptions of the Tourism Industry in Low-Density Areas: The Case of Boticas, in the Northeast of Portugal

2021

The reduced demographic dynamic of certain low-density areas, in conjunction with the inability to undertake local and regional public initiatives, in particular those that require the commitment of local stakeholders, has contributed to the weakness of the social and economic framework of such areas, including those in Portugal. In view of this fact, an empirical study was undertaken in one of Portugal’s inland rural areas—the municipality of Boticas—during the first 6 months of 2016 with a view to (1) assess residents’ perceptions of the municipality’s tourism attributes and potential and (2) help implement a more participative and sustainable tourism strategy in the municipality and neighbouring areas as a means of enhancing the multi-functionality of that territory. The empirical approach used descriptive statistics and factor analysis, with principal component analysis. We found that residents believe that their territory is endowed with relevant tourism attributes, although th...

A study of tourist decision processes: Algarve, Portugal

Consumer psychology of tourism, hospitality and leisure, 2004

This study investigates tourist consumer behaviour in the Algarve, Portugal, with particular emphasis on their perceptions and motivations. A theoretical framework is developed, which assumes a relationship between pre-decision, decision and post-purchasing evaluation, (i.e. the main phases of the tourist decision process). A proposed decision model substantiates the motivations, perceptions, expectations and choice about the Algarve. A questionnaire was used to interview a random sample of tourists (n=454), which was administered between July and August 1997. Multivariate statistics, especially factor analysis, were employed to find different exogenous variables at work for both perceptions and motivations, which varied according to the participant's country of origin. Eight factors were found which help in understanding the perceived image and motivations tourists of different nationalities have about the Algarve. Using univariate analysis, the study went a step further to cha...

Tourist of The North Portugal Region and Local Accommodation: Influences and Motivations

IBIMA Business Review, 2020

Local Accommodation is increasingly an option for those who travel and seek new concepts or follow trends. The present research aims to understand what the main influence and motivation factors are when the tourist of the north Portugal chooses local accommodation in Portugal and abroad. After a literature review, an online survey was conducted during May and July 2019, with all Portuguese living in the north of Portugal who had travelled at least once over the past 5 years. A random sample of 239 participants was collected and data was treated through SPSS software. The gathered information allowed developing an exploratory descriptive analysis, an inferential analysis and a factor analysis. The results seem to indicate that there is a significant relationship between the national tourist's adhesions to touristic accommodation in Portugal and abroad. The adhesion to local accommodation in Portugal is not associated with the reasons for the trip/travel, and the adhesion to local accommodation abroad is mostly motivated by leisure. The location (Portugal/abroad) is not relevant to the perception of the national tourist about the touristic accommodation.
