Use of Social Media in Libraries: A Perspective of a Developing Country

Social Media (SM) provides a range of possibilities for libraries to provide services out from traditional ways and means as modern life has been influenced greatly and massively by the internet. Owing to the amazing advancement of services given through the internet, libraries and information centers have to change and perform efficiently to convene the information needs of modern users. Libraries must use the modern SM tools to enhance and thrive in this age of the internet. Currently, libraries are adopting these tools in their services to satisfy the information and research needs of the users. SM applications in libraries drive to convene the growing and varying prospects of library clients. This paper aims to investigate the use of SM to enhance library effectiveness in Pakistani libraries. The study is based on a survey that was administered through survey monkey. The data of 71 filled questionnaires were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. Results show that 73.2% of respondents started using social media after 2008, and the top users are university libraries (53.52%). 76.1 % using Facebook, but 56.3 % believe in the usefulness of blogs/blogging. Professional networking (74.6%) is the main purpose of using SM, followed by the promotion of library services (69%). Three main challenges in using SM at libraries are 1) technical problems, 2) restrictions on using social media at the office; and 3) low internet connection.

The Importance of Social Media for Promoting the Products and Services in Academic Libraries

The presence of Social Media (SM) is almost everywhere, and its applications are used in various institutions and organizations. The applications have affected every spot of human activities and it modernized the information communication. The SM has been changing the face of the libraries and enable the libraries to market their resources and services. In this present scenario the libraries are depending on SM for fulfilling their academic objectives and satisfying the users. The college and University libraries adopt various platforms of SM to showcase the library resources. The attractive features of the SM can transform quickly the library atmosphere and the libraries. The aims of this study are to know the present position of SM tools, the attitude of the library professionals, to discover the most popular SM and to know the various problems faced by the librarians. A structured online questionnaire was prepared using Google Docs and send to 62 librarians of the Arts and Science Colleges of Kerala University. Out of 62 of them, 48 responded and were taken as the samples for the study. The findings of the study highlights that out of 48 respondents 31 of them use SM tools for marketing the library products and 17 of the respondents have no accounts in SM.The libraries used different SM tools such as WhatsApp, Facebook, Blog, Wiki, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter. The Facebook and Blog were the most popular SM tools used for marketing. Majority of them agreed that they faced few problems.

Social Media Can Be Fruitful for The Libraries in The Future Generation Its Makes Things Possible for Librarians: A Critical Note

The rapid progress and development of social media and its associated tools have made things easy for the library staff and library professionals. Social media is the fastest tool of communication in today's world, where everyone can reach the other within a click. At the same time, the library professionals are getting familiar with social media and its related tools to apply in their respective libraries. The library professionals are creating a virtual platform using Social media to interact with their users and social media is also helping to reach out to the targeted audiences and customers. Social media is used by librarians to make their library users and also use social media for the marketing of their sources and services. Several factors are influencing the use of social media in the libraries because the library professionals think that social media is the best choice to bring library users nearer. Besides these facts there are massive numbers of challenges and issues faced by the library professional while using social media in their respective libraries. These hurdles and issues should be resolved for better and reliable use of social media in the libraries. Library professionals use social media to share information with their potential users. This paper has highlighted some of the aspects of social media e.g. usage, factors and issues, challenges in the use of libraries.

Use of Social Media in Marketing of Library and Information Services in Bangladesh

The focus of this study is to discover the use, purpose, importance and problems faced by the library and information professionals in Bangladesh in marketing through social media. For this study public universities (17), private universities (24) and special (5) libraries in Bangladesh were selected as a research sample. The findings of this paper showed that most of the libraries use Facebook and LinkedIn for marketing of library and information services. Most of the libraries use social media for marketing library product and services, for sharing library news and events, video conferencing, advertisement, and research purpose. An online version of the questionnaire was distributed in the respective libraries in Bangladesh. Library professionals also provided necessary suggestions and opinions about ways of enhancing library services through using social media.

Planning and Implications of Social Media Tools to Provide Quality Library Services in Academic Libraries

The core objective to work in this domain is to address how one can exploit the social media to serve the purpose of providing modernize library and information services in context of present digitized society. This study is based on selected research samples which are fifty regular library users from five different and premier engineering colleges stationed within the region of central Gujarat. This paper concluded that good quality libraries are using social media such as Facebook, whatsapp and LinkedIn in a wider way to provide its continuous services to its esteemed users. All most all the libraries utilizes the social media route the most effective and easy to reach to general masses to highlight their library product, services, events, advertisement, research purposes and video conferencing. The online questionnaire was floated to the aforementioned library personals and received the same with their feedback, opinion and suggestions indication how to make library services more attractive and usable by utilizing social media platform effectively and efficiently.

The popularity of social media made it as a fastest communication tool for dissemination of information and influenced by all sorts of people, so as like others librarians are also influenced by social media. The social media tools are gaining its importance day by day. In the field of library science and library it is one of the most important and powerful tool for disseminating the library services. Library professional are using these tools for the purpose of the promoting library services and resource. But in India due to the lack of IT knowledge, awareness among the LIS professionals so also the internet connectivity problem, it is seen only used by the modern IT savvy people and modern libraries. There are different kinds of social media tools available globally but it is the librarians responsibility to make it use and choose a best available among them.

Social Media Platforms: Effective tools to provide innovative library services in a university environment

The paper presents how social media platforms can be used as effective tools to provide innovative library services in a university environment. The data was collected from both the central and state universities’ websites especially to focus on the readiness of the university libraries. It is ascertained that how university libraries integrate these technologies to provide effective library services to the end users. For the present study, the Global Alexa rankings were considered as the source for the selection of popular social media platforms. Each of these platforms is further analyzed to know how these could be used to facilitate information or provide library services to enhance the quality of the services. The outcome of the study reveals that the usage of social media in the university libraries in India is still in the formative stage and needs to gear up to meet the growing expectations of the users.
