The purpose of the article is to study the artistic features of Bohdan Zholdak’s military prose "Ukry" and Yevhen Polozhii’s "Ilovaisk". The methodological basis of the study is complex and is based mainly on the tools of traditional literary studies (comparative-typological, comparative-historical and specific-textual types of literary analysis) using elements of motivational analysis. The article examines military prose as a phenomenon of modern Ukrainian literature; genre diversity of works dedicated to the realities of the anti-terrorist operation and the war in Donbas; the main problems that writers raise. It is determined that Bohdan Zholdak’s film story “Ukry” shows “a noble, active, strong hero who defends freedom, justice and universal ideals.” Zholdak’s style (burlesque-postmodern) depiction of characters is considered with their positive and negative sides, true language and emotions. Yevhen Polozhii’s novel “Ilovaisk” was analyzed, based on the memoir...
THE FORMATION OF UKRAINIAN LITERARY CANON ON THE DONBASS WAR: EMOTIONAL MATRICES OF NON-COMBATANTS
Plekhanov A.A., Herasimau U.K. The formation of Ukrainian literary canon on the Donbass war: emotional matrices of non-combatants // Etnograficheskoe Obozrenie. 2021. No 4. P. 175–190, 2021
The article examines the representation of non-combatants in Ukrainian literature in the context of formation of a literary canon on the Donbass war. The research focuses on the literary practices instrumental in reconstructing the experience both of the displaced persons and of the civilians trapped in war zones, and aims to show how this experience is reflected in emotional matrices. We draw on the data collected during the 2016-2018 fieldwork in Ukraine, and attempt to analyze it conceptually in the perspective of the interdisciplinary field of studying history of emotions, associated with the work of William Reddy, Barbara Rosenwein, and others. By employing both anthropological and literary approaches, we explore the key texts of the contemporary Ukrainian literature on the subject of war in the East of Ukraine. We argue that the theme of experience of the civilians and the displaced persons, running through the emergent narrative canon, may come to constitute its dominant part.

This article describes some military subjects and plots which wouldn't had been described in War literature, had writers followed restriction familiar to historians who had been conducting their research in Central Archive of Defense Ministry of Russian Federation (CAMO) in 1990s - 1st half of 2000s. For modern Ukraine, cultural transformations are extremely relevant, because in the conditions of confrontation with Russian aggression, it turned out that the use of films, books, music and other cultural aspects can become the tools of hybrid warfare. The purpose of this article is to understand certain aspects of the transformation of the culture of the Ukrainian people in the context of wartime realities. During the processing of this material, general scientific methods and specialized research methods were used. The results of the work highlighted the topical issues: the alleged institutional crisis of Ukrainian cultural institutions, the destruction of cultural monuments by Russian troops, the transformation of cultural values. Russian aggression only accelerated the development vector of Ukrainian culture in the 21st century, which replaced the old Soviet paradigms that functioned during the 1990s. From a gradual attachment to Russian-Soviet landmarks, modern Ukrainian cultu...

CULTURE AND ART IN MODERN SCIENTIFIC DISCOURSE
The purpose of the paper is a formalization of the visual frames of the russian-Ukrainian war as the parts of a truly multiplex of its vision. Every of its frames must be produced as a complex socio-cultural construction where the stereotypes of war coverage intersected with the mental features of Ukrainian culture, formed by the previous historical and cultural tradition, and the consequences of the modernization transformations in Ukraine during last 30 years.
Home, Family, and War: Images of Home in the Ukrainian Novel About the War in Donbass
Primerjalna književnost
This article focuses on one of the most pressing issues in Ukraine today, the ongoing war in the Donbass. Using selected examples of Ukrainian prose, the authors analyse the impact of the war on the fate of individuals and their families. However, the theme goes far beyond the literary text and touches on important social and political issues facing Ukraine today. The authors understand prose as one of the narratives of culture, which not only conceptualizes reality in a certain way, but also has a real impact on social attitudes. Contemporary Ukrainian prose about the war in the Donbass analyses many stereotypes about the inhabitants of eastern Ukraine, shows them in their complicated family relationships, and also takes up one of the most universal literary motifs, namely the figure of the house in the face of a disruption of its everyday order. Characteristic of this prose is the individualized perspective, which aims not only to present events on a broad political level, but abo...
Ukraine and War in Russian-Language Literature
Japanese Slavic and East European Studies
While the Soviet tradition of remembering the Eastern Front of WW2 as the "Great Patriotic War" is inherited and reinforced in Russia and Belarus today, the term itself tends not to be used in Ukraine. This essay uses war novels written by Russian-language writers of the Soviet era to analyze and compare the spatial representations of Ukraine and the image of Ukrainians. This will provide clues to unravel the intricate boundaries in the historical memory of the former Soviet regions. Donbass writer Boris Gorbatov's The Unvanquished blurs the boundaries between Russia and Ukraine, while allowing no in-between presence such as POWs or collaborators. Belarusian writer Ales Adamovich's The Chasteners gives them a human face of complex interiority and ethnic traits, but also fosters a discourse that views Ukrainians as collaborators with fascism. Both novels borrow motifs from Nikolai Gogol's Taras Bulba on Ukrainian Cossacks.

The collapse of the Soviet Union and the subsequent political transformations almost overnight changed the lives of Ukrainians. Surprisingly, until the early 2010s there had been no contemporary Ukrainian picturebooks devoted to the traumatic experiences of WWII, totalitarianism, as well as the political and cultural changes of the 1980s-1990s. The Euromaidan revolution, the annexation of Crimea, and the subsequent war with Russia have left the first post-Soviet generations with new traumas. Although it is believed that trauma in its distinctiveness cannot be communicated, the attempts to work through it provide a rich discursive repository for theoretical reflection. The proposed paper involves an examination of the discourses on war, trauma, and revolution in three contemporary Ukrainian picturebooks: Khrystyna Lukashchuk's Kazka pro Maidan [2014], Romana Romanyshyn's and Andriy Lesiv's Viyna shcho zminyla Rondo [2015], and Halyna Kyrpa's Miy tato stav zirkoyu [2015-illustrated by Oksana Bula]. Focusing on the relationship between text and illustrations, I identify three possible approaches towards the depiction of war and revolution in these picture books and the production of second-generation memory.

The article examines official Ukrainian publications devoted to repelling the aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine. It is noted that the period of the Anti-Terrorist Operation / Joint Forces Operation is rather weakly reflected in such publications. The most thorough of them is the «White Book of the Anti-Terrorist Operation in Eastern Ukraine (2014-2016)». The start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Federation troops on February 24, 2022 caused a very quick reaction of state scientific institutions. From the first days, work began on the creation of official descriptions and chronicles of events. The approaches to their compilation are different, and the substantive content is also different. «Military-historical description of the Russian-Ukrainian war» (edited by Ministry of Defense of Ukraine and General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine) is the most accurate of the analyzed publications. A significant part of the volume of the issues of this issue concerns military-political and military-economic factors, as well as the general characteristics of the strategic situation. The very description of warfare in most cases is characterized by a certain degree of generalization. These publications can help to reconstruct the general situation and sequence of events during the investigation of a particular operation. «Chronicle of War» (edited by National Defense University of Ukraine), on the other hand, is characterized by great detail and is practically devoid of generalizations. Its materials can help in reconstructing specific episodes of combat operations. As a starting point for research when examining individual operations, in our opinion, it is advisable to use the Military History Research Center of the Armed Forces of Ukraine publications.
