Investigation of the Effect of Linguistic, Psychological and Social Factors on the Use of Swearwords by University Students

The present study was carried out to measure the effect of linguistic, psychological and social factors on the use of swearwords by university students. The research population consisted of all students of IAU of Chaloos. 300 questionnaires were distributed through random sampling method out of which 238 completed questionnaires underwent analysis. The objectives of the study comprised the study of the effect age, gender, education level of self and parents, economic status of the family, place of residence, the formality level of the contexts, mother tongue and different types of socializations on the use of swearwords. The mentioned factors formed the research hypotheses, as well. The findings indicated a positive and meaningful relationship between mother’s level of education, time spent at game net, time spent on the street, time spent at cafe, and friendship socialization with the use of swearwords.

English Swear Words by Indonesian Learners

Language functions to convey expression and content, either for their self or for others. Some people tend to use swear words in certain conditions and situation to show their feeling or just to express an inconvenience. In other words, swear word is closely related to anger expression. This paper examines the use of English swear words in certain simulated anger situations in order to know what kinds of swear words that the respondents use. The data were gathered through some simulated anger situations which were made by considering certain social dimensions. The respondents are the university students who were taken randomly through different classes. This study shows that certain English swear words are commonly used by the respondents and the social status of respondents governs as an important aspect.

Male and Female Attitudes towards Swear Words: A Case Study at Binus International School

Swear words are generally used to articulate anger, pain, excitement, frustration, or surprise. It is often imitated by children who may not really understand the meaning of the swear words. This survey-based study aims to identify the swear utterances of male and female teenagers, find out their commonly-used swear words, and investigate whether bilingual male or female students of Grade 12, Binus International School, Simprug, Jakarta, use more swear words. A combination of multiple choice and open-ended questionnaire was constructed and the analysis revealed that swearing is inevitable and becomes a part of the male and female language repertoire. Both groups of students are said to employ the use of Indonesian and English swear words in carrying-out conversations in order to release stress and express intense emotions. However, male students tend to use more swear words that are associated with sexuality.

The portrayal of gender difference toward swear word: an investigation of words and expressions used by Indonesian students

The society in using language is susceptible to any type of word including the expression of swear word. This research aims to determine of the types in swear word use based on the gender of its use in communication. Descriptive qualitative is used as a research approach and its application uses phenomenology methods. The data are from male and female students by matching them to Wardhaugh’s and Jay’s list of swear word. Students of elefth social three are selected for this research. Analysis of the results of gender-based reviews shows that men are stronger in the use of swear word forms. In contrast to women who are more aggressive and talk much only in their groups. The Acquisition of Swear Words by Students in Central Kalimantan

Swear words are often associated to inappropriate expressions in all societies. This study investigates the acquisition of swear words by Indonesian students using social media which was designed in descriptive qualitative approach. Data were gathered by questionnaireand interviews method. Result shows that the students tend to use animal terms to swear to show anger to others. Further, friendship becomes the main source of their acquisition of swear words and these students tend to swear among themselves to show intimacy. Moreover, these students admitted that they learnt how to swear from social media and free videos available on-line.

Rating of Motives of Using Swear Words by University Students

The problem of swearing by youth in public is becoming acute nowadays. A growing tendency can be traced in Ukraine that young women are on equal terms with men in this respect. The authors of the article explored the reasons of using non-standard language by Ukrainian students under modern conditions and specified what should be done to improve their speech culture and eliminate their swearing. Language is a tool used by humans in communicating and interacting. Swearing words are part of a language used by people in expressing themselves. Currently, swearing words are being discussed by many people. This condition was triggered by a decision from KPAI (Indonesian Child Protection Commission) in September 2020 regarding the prohibition of the use of a swear word. The aim of this study is to find out the perceptions of the Indonesian youth generations regarding the use of swearing words. The purpose of this study attempts to discuss selected related theories on profanity and its influence towards the daily communication. It explains and reviews theory of sociolinguistics and selfperception theory with regard to use of profanity in daily communications. Sociolinguistic theory discusses the interconnection between language and society. It also elaborates on how every person uses a language and speaks in a particular way as part of their socio-cultural act. The focus of selfperception theory is on attitude formation developed by psychologist and it emphasizes on the development of people's attitude. In addition, this theory emphasizes that people induce attitudes without accessing internal cognition as well as mood states.

Swear words among young learners: A case study of the elementary students

This case study examines the usage of swear words among young learners. It aims to find out the most frequently used swear words, the intense emotions that triggered the participants to swear, the strategies used to tone down the swear words, and the contributors to learning how to swear. A combination of quantitative (Likert scale survey, open-ended survey, and data elicitation from drawings,) and qualitative (interview) studies was conducted among the 109 elementary students from school A. The findings revealed that the most frequently used swear words were related to intellectual based terms and religion; anger was the primary reason for the young learners to swear to someone; the use of acronyms was commonly explored to tone down the offensiveness of the swear words, and moms were the highest contributors for the young learners to learn how to swear. The Use of Swear Words in the Movies with Different Topics and Characters

This study was aimed at examining the use of swear word in the movies with different topics and characters. The objectives if this study were to find out the reasons of using swear word in the movies. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was transcript the movies. The data were identified, analyzed, and categorized based on L,jung ( 2012 ) theory. The technique of data collection was interactive model by Miles and Huberman ( 2014 ).
