Demand for Agent-Based Transportation Models & Social Behavioral Challenges
Procedia Computer Science, 2017
Agent-Based modelling has been around us for quite some time now and has thus become a crucial factor for executing prediction-based planning, such as the transportation models for metropolitan cities. This paper undertakes the fundamental understanding of the agent-based modeling and simulation and its application to the transportation models while discussing the scope of its applications and advantages too. The paper then presents the concepts attributed to the social behaviors in conjunction with the agent-based modelling techniques applied so far. The literature review conducted in lieu of this work has resulted in agreement with the fact that the potential of agent-based modelling is by far greater than ever due to the everimproving computing speeds and capabilities, while the understanding of complex human behavior will continue to be a challenge for simulations and automation techniques developed so far.

An agent-based transport simulation model is used to examine the impacts of Autonomous Vehicles (AVs) on the mobility of certain groups of people. In the state of the art, it has been found that the researchers primarily have simulation studies focusing on the impacts of AVs on people regardless of certain groups. However, this study focuses on assessing the impacts of AVs on different groups of users, where each group is affected variously by the introduction of different penetration levels of AVs into the market. The Multi-Agent Transport Simulation (MATSim) software, which applies the co-evolutionary algorithm and provides a framework to carry out large-scale agent-based transport simulations, is used as a tool for conducting the simulations. In addition to the simulation of all travellers, 3 groups of users are selected as potential users of AVs, as follow: (1) long commuters with high-income, (2) elderly people who are retired, and (3) part-time workers. Budapest (Hungary) is e...
Multi-agent simulation for planning and designing new shared mobility services
Research in Transportation Economics, 2019
Limiting private cars' use while promoting sustainable modes of transport is one of the main challenges of urban transport planning. In this context, characterized by scarce resources and increasing demand for mobility, Demand Responsive Shared Transport (DRST) services can bridge the gap between shared low-quality public transport and unsustainable individual private transport. Taking advantage of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), they can supply transport solutions ranging from flexible transit to ride sharing services, providing real-time "on demand" mobility through fleets of vehicles shared by different passengers. The optimal design of a DRST service requires a trade-off among efficiency (from the operators' point of view), service quality (from the users' point of view) and sustainability (from the community's point of view). In this paper, an agentbased model (ABM) fed with GIS data is used to explore different system configurations of a specific type of DRST service, i.e. flexible transit, and to estimate the transport demand and supply variables that make the service feasible and convenient. The model reproduces a mixed fixed/flexible route transit service with different fleet size and vehicle capacity in the city of Ragusa (Italy) with the aim to: (i) make a first test of the ABM model with GIS-based demand and road network models; (ii) explore different vehicle dispatching strategies; (iii) find appropriate indicators to monitor the service quality and efficiency. Simulation results show the impact of fleet composition and route choice strategy on the system performance. In particular, they show an optimal range of operating vehicles that minimizes a total unit cost indicator, accounting both for passenger travel time and vehicle operation cost. By reproducing the microinteraction between demand and supply agents (i.e. passengers and vehicles), it is possible to monitor the macroscopic behaviour of the system, and derive useful suggestions for the correct planning, management and optimization of DRST services.
SimMobility: A Multi-scale Integrated Agent-Based Simulation Platform
2016
Developments in integrated agent-based platform has shown progress, however, most of efforts are based on integrating activity-based demand models with dynamic traffic assignment model. Integration beyond this level is limited and mostly based on loosely coupled mechanism (i.e. manual exchange of data). SimMoblity is a simulation platform that integrates various mobility-sensitive behavioral models within a multi-scale simulation platform that considers land-use, transportation and communication interactions. It particularly focuses on impacts on transportation networks, intelligent transportation services and vehicular emissions, thereby enabling the simulation of a portfolio of technology, policy and investment options under alternative future scenarios. In short, SimMobility encompasses the modeling of millions of agents, from pedestrians to drivers, from phones, traffic lights to GPS probes, from cars to buses and trains, from second-by-second to year-by-year simulations. Simmob...
Large-scale agent-based combined traffic simulation of private cars and commercial vehicles
Transportation Research Record, 2010
The number of independent and interdependent freight actors (firms), the complex supply chain structures among them, and the sensitivity of shipment data are but a few reasons why modeling freight traffic is lagging its public and private transit counterparts. In this paper we used an agent-based approach to reconstruct commercial activity chains, and simulated them-along with private vehiclesfor a large-scale scenario in Gauteng, South Africa. The simulated activities are compared to the actual observed activities of 5196 vehicles that were inferred from GPS logs covering approximately six months. The results show that the activity chains reconstructed are both spatially and temporally accurate, especially in areas of high activity density. With freight vehicles being a major contributor to traffic congestion and emissions, our contribution is significant in bridging the gap between the person and commercial transport modeling state-of-the-art.
A Software-Agnostic Agent-based Platform for Modelling Emerging Mobility Systems
Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research), 2021
Due to the rapidly accelerated innovation cycle in transport and the emergence of new mobility concepts and technologies, public authorities, policy makers, and transport planners are currently in need of the tools for sustainable spatial and transport planning in the new mobility era. In this paper, a new modular, software-agnostic and activity-based spatial and transport planning platform is designed, i.e, the HARMONY Model Suite, that facilitates a novel integration of new and existing spatial and transport modelling tools. The paper focuses on describing the architecture of the platform and its passenger mobility simulation framework, which integrates -in an interoperable manner-activity-based models, mobility service management, and traffic simulation tools for evaluating new mobility system dynamics. The service management controllers for new mobility concepts are discussed in more detail with regards to their functionality and applicability.
AN AGENT-BASED VEHICLE ROUTING SIMULATION TOOL FOR ROAD NETWORKS WITH TIME-VARIANT DATA
Simulation modeling is one of the analytic techniques commonly used for transportation management; it includes such activities as route planning and post-operation analysis. One of the simulation methods, agent-based simulation, has become increasingly popular due to the availability of good micro-level data collected through technologies such as GPS-enabled devices and road sensors. This paper presents the design and implementation of an agent-based simulation tool that can be used to analyse vehicle routing algorithms. We demonstrate how the tool can be used in practice by implementing two vehicle routing algorithms: shortest-path and LANTIME. LANTIME is an algorithm that can be used to minimize CO 2 emissions.

Taxi services account for a significant part of the daily trips in most of cities around the world. Due to the fact that most of the taxi markets are regulated by a central authority there is the need for developing tools for understanding the behavior of these markets to policy regulations and supporting decision makers. This paper presents an agent based model for simulating taxi services in urban areas. Taxi models presented in the literature can be grouped into aggregated, equilibrium and simulation models, with the latter having been studied to a lesser extent. Agent simulation is a powerful tool for analyzing such complex problems, where stochastic nature of the variables and spatial distribution hinders the application of aggregated models. The agent-based model is presented together with the behavioral rules of the agents and applied to the city of Barcelona, obtaining the optimum number of vehicles and performance indicators of the provision of taxi services under the dispa...
