A preliminary investigation of the differing use of deixis between spoken and written discourse : In the case of direction giving (original) (raw)
This study investigates the varying use of deixis in spoken and written directions given by five native English speakers. By analyzing both spoken and written texts, notable differences were observed, especially in the use of spatial deixis and shifts in personal deixis. The findings indicate that spoken discourse tends to utilize deixis more frequently than written discourse, showcasing a preference for spatial indicators in spoken communication, which can suggest psychological proximity to the referents.
