Phenomenology Study of High School Students’ Experiences Who Do Suicidal-Attempt in Malang City, Indonesia

The objective of this study is to explore the experiences of high school students who are committing suicide in Malang, Indonesia. The study was qualitative research with an interpretive phenomenological approach and data analysis using IPA (Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis). Themes generated based on the results of the study include disappointment in the family as the basis of adolescent suicide, abuse from school friends triggers adolescents to think of suicide, and adolescents conduct suicide attempts spontaneously without planning. The results of this study indicate that many of the problems teenagers feel and think that trigger up causing teenagers to attempt suicide. The results of this study can also help us to better understand suicide attempts from the point of view of adolescents.

Suicide as a Social Problem among Young People and Adolescents in Aktobe City

The purpose of this article is to study the cause-effect relationship leading to suicide based on the results of two questionnaires conducted in Marat Ospanov State Medical University (Aktobe city). Method: The study involves two questionnaire surveys (2016 and 2017 years) of 1,000 1st-4th year students of the West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University based on the Beck Scale for Suicidal Ideation (aimed at determination of the level of depressive state, the portrait of a suicide) and the second similar questionnaire involved 500 respondents of the same University using the Dembo-Rubinstein method in Prikhozhan's modification, that is aimed at determining the level of self-esteem and aspiration. Results: The questionnaires conducted in Marat Ospanov State Medical University allowed to determine the levels of suicidal behaviour among young people and adolescents of Aktobe city as well as determine the criteria, levels and reasons of suicidal intentions in percentage and by gender criterion. The results are partially presented in the form of diagrams. Conclusions: The study may be used for developing the complex methodologies of suicide prevention among young people and adolescents in Aktobe city and everywhere in the world where such a problem arises sharply. Such a kind of study was firstly conducted with usage of declared methods in Aktobe city.

Suicide risk and crises suffered in the context of COVID-19 mediated by interpersonal family communication Riesgo suicida y crisis sufridas en el contexto del COVID-19 mediadas por la comunicación familiar

Objective To analyze the relationship between suicidal ideation and the concerns or affectations perceived at the family, economic and health levels during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic in Colombia, and the mediating role of family communication. Method Participants were obtained through cluster sampling and quotas, resulting in 660 Colombians (Z=1.96; variance=0.25; error=3.9%), who answered a questionnaire consisting of three reliable scales between November 1 and 30, 2020, after providing informed consent. Binary logistic regression was used to evaluate the concerns or affectations that most influenced suicidal ideation during this period. Results Thirty-five percent of the Colombian participants presented a high level of suicidal ideation. The concerns or affectations that most strongly explain this level come from the realm of health and intrafamily relationships. The effect of health concerns or affectations on suicidal ideation decreases by up to 32.4% when family communication is open. Likewise, when this type of positive communication is present, the effect of the concerns or affectations perceived in the family, such as breakdowns, distancing, and crisis of coexistence, on suicidal ideation decrease between 29.1% and 70.1%. Conclusion Open family communication is a protective factor for mental health in crisis contexts because it can contribute to preventing suicide and alleviate to the concerns or affectations generated by COVID-19. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen mental health programs through a communicative approach aimed at promoting assertive family dialog to achieve greater attention and openness to talk about concerns and affectations suffered.

The Loss of a Generation: A Study on Children Whose Parents Were Victims of the COVID-19 Pandemic in Sleman, Yogyakarta

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted children’s living conditions and quality of life. The present qualitative study investigated the conditions of children whose parents were victims of COVID-19. The project was carried out from July to September 2021 in Sleman regency, Yogyakarta. Data were gathered through interviews, observations, and focus group discussions. At the time of the study there were 614 children in Sleman who had lost their parents. Our study revealed that the pandemic worsened the living conditions of children, particularly those whose parents passed away because of COVID-19. Children had feelings of a bleak future due to the loss of parents, were confused about how to survive and pay for living expenses and school fees, anxious about being abandoned by parents who had been their protectors, worried about their upbringing, and experienced feelings of loneliness and frustration. COVID-19 Suicide among Adolescents and Youths during the Lockdown: An Exploratory Study based on Media Reports

Background: The incidences of COVID-19 related suicide among adolescents and youths have been reported across the world. There is no cumulative study focusing on nature, patterns, and causative factors that lead to the present investigation. Methods: A purposive sampling of google news between 15 February to 6 July was performed. After excluding duplicate reports, the final list comprised a total of 37-suicide cases across 11 countries. Results: More male suicides were reported (21-cases, i.e., 56.76%), and the mean age of the total victims was 16.6±2.7 years (out of a total of 29-cases). About two-thirds of the suicides were from three countries named India (11-cases), United Kingdom (8-cases), and the USA (6-cases). Out of 23-student victims, 14 were school-going students. Objective: To investigate the external factors that influence people to commit suicide during the pandemic. Design: Mixed-method approach was used to examine the direct and indirect impact of pandemic on suicide. The study has assessed socio-demographic profile of suicide cases as well as the cause of suicide of those who committed suicide using police ledger data and socio-cultural autopsies. Using case study method, interviewed three families of the deceased and tried to understand the underlying factors, context and process that explains the complex phenomenon of suicide. Direct and indirect impact of pandemic on suicide. Result: There is a clear mis-match in reporting of socio-demographic profile of suicide cases and the underlying reason for the same in police ledger visa -vis socio-cultural autopsy. Current case studies have revealed the process through which the deceased have committed suicide. Specifically, the reasons being financial crisis due to COVID-19, habits such as alcoholism, Gambling and extramarital affair, lack of understanding between couple, lack of communication between the couples for a long period. It has also been noticed that the families had no idea the deceased was suicidal and were left alone during this vulnerable period. Since, excessive alcohol consumption was common in all three cases and due to their financial situation, these families could not afford treatment at a deaddiction center. Conclusion: The current research discovered that the link between the lay counselor and people at risk of committing suicide could be a mobile application that aids in the recruitment of such people.
