Impact of total quality management on organisational performance: exploring the mediating effects of organisational learning and innovation

International Journal of Business Environment, 2017

Total quality management involves integrated and dynamic processes. Previous researchers have endeavoured to examine the relationship between TQM and organisational performance by untangling the major components of the TQM, such as learning capabilities and process and product innovations. However, past studies have neglected to examine the mediating impact of both organisational learning capabilities and innovations on the relationship between TQM and organisational performance. In the present research we explored the mediating impact of organisational learning and innovations on the TQM-performance relationship. Our results revealed that TQM has a positive and significant association with both organisational learning and innovations. Moreover, organisational learning and innovations were positively and significantly associated with organisational performance. Findings also revealed that TQM-performance is greater when mediated by learning and innovation compared to direct influence of TQM on organisational performance.

Individual interviews were completed within three weeks and each took an average of 15-20 minutes. Data obtained from individual interviews were deciphered and transferred to NVIVO 12.0 Qualitative Data Analysis package program, and data analysis was completed. Some important results of the research; Participating students stated that total quality management practices in educational organizations are mostly unsuccessful. The most mentioned reason for this is the replacement of the planned applications before the results are obtained. To do so, the findings of a stratified sample size comprising of top management team, academic heads of departments, lecturers, support staff and students was obtained for the study. Structured questionnaires were administered and an interview schedule was arranged for a number of members chosen at random and all class representatives. Secondary data was obtained from the University reports on the Total Quality Management implementation and progress. Descriptive statistics have been used to analyse data. The data has been presented in terms of tables and graphs. The study revealed that the implementation of Total Quality Management in KCA University is facing challenges because members do not yet know how best to implement it. At the same time some members are not aware of Total Quality Management principles and do not understand how it works. The study only relied on an accessible sample within the University and was based on their word not considering the fact that sometimes people would respond depending on what they think you want to hear and not sincerely. Investigating the effects of innovation and employee performance on the relationship between total quality management practices and firm performance: An empirical study of Turkish firms

International Journal of Production Economics, 2010

The results from studies of the relationship between total quality management (TQM) practices and firm performance and from those on the effects of TQM practices on various types of performance measures are mixed. There is no extensive empirical evidence about the effect of TQM practices on employee performance and innovation performance, and few empirical studies have investigated the mediating effect (indirect relationship) of one type of performance measure on the relationship between TQM practices and another type of performance measure. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationships between TQM practices and multiple performance measures and to examine the mediating effects of employee performance and innovation performance on the relationship between TQM practices and firm performance. The study used a cross-sectional survey methodology-we sent questionnaires to 500 randomly selected ISO 9001:2000 certified firms in different industries in the Marmara region in Turkey in 2005 and 2006 and obtained 373 usable questionnaires. After confirming the validity and reliability of the latent variables with confirmatory and exploratory factor analyses, we tested the model and hypotheses using structural equation modeling. Results of the study support the proposed hypotheses that employee performance and innovation performance partially mediate the relationship between TQM practices and firm performance. The study also provides managerial and research implications, research limitations, and suggestions for future studies.
