The Beggar on the Threshold : Spaces, Ritual Crossings and Social Identity in the Homeric Epic (original) (raw)

2013

Abstract

The ritual meaning of the threshold can be considered as a common feature for the ancient Mediterranean civilizations. The paper focuses on the functions of the threshold in the Homeric epic, whilst discussing the meaning and the contextual uses of two greek words: οὐδός, used to describe the threshold itself, and θύραι (the plural form of θύρα, door), which refers to the system of the house doors, whose meaning can be clearly associated with the modern idea of the threshold
