(How) should prices be adjusted to reflect the environmental harm of products? Teacher trainees' understanding of an eco-economic phenomenon (original) (raw)

A Review of Price, Principle, and the Environment, by Mark Sagoff
2018
Environmentalism and economics have a complicated relationship. Sound environmental policy is often perceived to be at odds with welfare-maximizing policy; restrictions on the development and use of land are probably the chief example of this conflict. At the same time, however, environmentalists often employ the analytical tools of welfare economics-as well as its scientific cachet-to provide support for their policies. Thus there is both a resistance to and reliance on welfare economics. In Price, Principle, and the Environment,' philosopher Mark Sagoff argues that, with a few exceptions, environmentalism should cease its reliance on economic analysis. To understand why Sagoff believes this, it is helpful to begin by examining some of the intellectual history he draws upon; for like all troubled couples, environmentalism and economics have a long past. In the late sixties and early seventies, neoclassical economists such as William Nordhaus and James Tobin began to argue that the scarcity of natural resources did not impose a limit on the production of goods and services. Instead their models suggested that technological innovation would always compensate for the effect of dwindling natural resources. 2 A simple explanation accounted for these results. As natural resource inputs to
EPRA TRUST, 2014
I nternal audit formerly referred to error examination and studies on a specific activity, and today, it emphasizes on better management in the future rather than the assessment of past activities of businesses with the Peril based approach. Developments in markets, corporate bankruptcies (Enron, Parmalat, etc.), developing technology and business environments at the beginning of the 2000s showed that many perils are faced to achieve the objectives. With the development of peril management and peril management models, the necessity for consideration of the perils in the internal audit processes has emerged. To Peril based approach in internal auditing, auditors began allocating the resources to high-peril areas and performing audits. Thus, the internal auditing has undergone a drastic change in the 2000s. RBIA is to concentrate the audit resources to the areas where the composition of probability of occurrence and impact of peril is higher.
Nowadays, it is inevitable for companies to be human oriented as well as being customer oriented. Because one of the factors that provide long-term profitability is to be socially responsible. Companies perform this with the help of green marketing applications. The aim of this study is to determine the willingness to pay of university students for the additional cost of green product, and reveal consequences for companies in terms of price adjustments. In this study used convenience sampling, 10 different durable and non-durable products have been determined. Different price levels selected in order to expose price sensitivity. While determining the price categories increases in the cost of 5 % have been taken into consideration. The survey implemented to 481 participants at Sakarya University. It"s concluded that consumers are willing to pay an additional price for green products. Price sensitivity is found to be relative.
TEACHER TRAINEES CONCEPTIONS OF ECONOMIC POLICY INSTRUMENTS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT
TEACHER TRAINEES CONCEPTIONS OF ECONOMIC POLICY INSTRUMENTS FOR THE ENVIRONMENT, 2018
In economics as well as environmental policy, Economic policy instruments for the environment (EPI) are typical and widely used measures to address ecological problems. However, very little is known about teaching and learning EPIs. This paper investigates qualitatively different ways in which teacher trainees of Economics in two German universities assess typical EPIs and compares them to disciplinary criteria. Data has been gained in group discussions. The paper applies the phenomenographic and documentary method. Teacher trainees' conceptions are found to only partially represent means-end-relations typical for Economics. Furthermore, important differences between teacher trainees' conceptions are found depending on the scenario used and the instrument they are evaluating. Based on teacher trainees' preconceptions and a comprehensive literature review of the relevant research from Ecological, Environmental and Behavioural Economics, I derive implications for teaching, primarily for teachers, but adaptable to suit for other students as well.
Essays on environmental economics
2015
This dissertation presents four essays in environmental economics. They address issues of environmental economics from microeconomic and program evaluation perspectives. The first essay study examines the "Clean Air Works" program on ozone concentration levels, which is operating in Charlotte area of North Carolina State. A quadruple Differences (DDDD) estimator is applied. In both cases, we find reduction in groundlevel ozone levels and improvement of the air quality in the treatment group where the "Clean Air Works" program is implemented. The second essay examines the effectiveness of the vanpool programme on traffic volume, which was introduced in 2006 in York County of South Carolina State. A quadruple Differences-inDifferences (DDDD) model is applied. We find that smog alerts and the change in the ozone warning threshold in association with vanpool program lead to significant traffic volume decrease in York County. The third essay examines the relationship between air pollution and recycling using panel data from a waste municipality survey in the state of Massachusetts during the period 2009-2012. The findings support that a negative relationship between recycling rate and particulate particles in the air of 2.5 micrometres or less in size (PM2.5) is present. This study explores the willingness to pay for (reducing) pollution in the UK. The Life Satisfaction Approach (LSA) is employed and the estimates are based on data from the British Household Panel Survey (BHPS). The effects of air pollution on individuals' happiness are estimated and their monetary value is calculated. In particular, four air pollutants are examined; sulphur dioxide (SO2), ground-level ozone (O3), nitrogen dioxides (NOX) and carbon monoxide (CO). The annual monetary values for ground level ozone range between £588-£864 for a drop of one standard deviation, while the respective values for the other air pollutants range between £288-£696. iv Acknowledgements Over the years of writing this dissertation, I have encountered various people. They influenced my way of thinking about economics as well as my approach to research which is ultimately embedded in this dissertation. I owe my deepest gratitude to my supervisor Dr. Arnaud Chevalier for his endless support, encouragement and for many inspiring feedbacks. He has been responsible for my professional growth and has worked very hard to ensure that this dissertation is in the right path. Special thanks go also to my dearest friends Dr. Theofanis Alexoudas, Athanasia Bekiaroudi, my sister Vivian Giovani, my mother Anastasia Giovani and Dr. Oznur Ozdamar for their unconditional love and full support. Without their support, I would not be able to finish this dissertation. No words in any language are even close to express my gratitude to my family. I would like to thank my PhD student fellows and the other professors, faculty and administration at Royal Holloway Department of Economics. This thesis has been financially supported by Royal Holloway University and the department of Economics. Special thanks to Mrs. Adrienne Wootten Meteorologist in State Climate Office of North Carolina for providing meteorological data and Mr. Cary D. Gentry, Sr.
