Inverse problem for the Schrödinger operator in an unbounded strip
Comptes Rendus Mathematique, 2008
We consider the operator H := i∂t + ∇ • (c∇) in an unbounded strip Ω in R 2 , where c(x, y) ∈ C 3 (Ω). We prove an adapted global Carleman estimate and an energy estimate for this operator. Using these estimates, we give a stability result for the diffusion coefficient c(x, y).
Eigenvalue asymptotics of layered media and their applications to the inverse problem
SIAM Journal on Applied Mathematics
We compute the asymptotics of the eigenvalues of the classical Sturm-Liouville problem with a piecewise smooth coefficient q. This means that q and/or its derivatives can have jump discontinuities. The boundary conditions are arbitrary. Our results extend the classical work of H. Hochstadt (see [Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 14 (1961), pp. 749-764]) and some related formulas discovered by G. Borg (see [Acta Math., 78 (1946), pp. 1-96]). Then, we apply our results to the inverse problem of determining the interfaces in a layered medium from acoustic data, since the index of refraction of such a medium can be considered piecewise smooth.
Approximation of the inverse elliptic problem with mixed boundary value conditions
2014
In the present study, the inverse problem for a multidimensional elliptic equation with mixed boundary conditions and overdetermination is considered. The first and second orders of accuracy in t and the second order of accuracy in space variables for the approximate solution of this inverse problem are constructed. Stability, almost coercive stability, and coercive stability estimates for the solution of these difference schemes are established. For the two-dimensional inverse problems with mixed boundary value conditions, numerical results are presented in test examples.

Two regularization methods for a class of inverse boundary value problems of elliptic type
Boundary Value Problems, 2013
This paper deals with the problem of determining an unknown boundary condition u(0) in the boundary value problem u yy (y) -Au(y) = 0, u(0) = f , u(+∞) = 0, with the aid of an extra measurement at an internal point. It is well known that such a problem is severely ill-posed, i.e., the solution does not depend continuously on the data. In order to overcome the instability of the ill-posed problem, we propose two regularization procedures: the first method is based on the spectral truncation, and the second is a version of the Kozlov-Maz'ya iteration method. Finally, some other convergence results including some explicit convergence rates are also established under a priori bound assumptions on the exact solution. MSC: 35R25; 65J20; 35J25
On an inverse boundary value problem of a nonlinear elliptic equation in three dimensions
Journal of Mathematical Analysis and Applications, 2014
This work considers an inverse boundary value problem for a 3D nonlinear elliptic partial differential equation in a bounded domain. In general, the problem is severely ill-posed. The formal solution can be written as a hyperbolic cosine function in terms of the 2D elliptic operator via its eigenfunction expansion, and it is shown that the solution is stabilized or regularized if the large eigenvalues are cut off. In a theoretical framework, a truncation approach is developed to approximate the solution of the ill-posed problem in a regularization manner. Under some assumptions on regularity of the exact solution, we obtain several explicit error estimates including an error estimate of Hölder type. A local Lipschitz case of source term for this nonlinear problem is obtained. For numerical illustration, two examples on the elliptic sine-Gordon and elliptic Allen-Cahn equations are constructed to demonstrate the feasibility and efficiency of the proposed methods.
The inverse problem for perturbed harmonic oscillator on the half-line
arXiv (Cornell University), 2005
We consider the perturbed harmonic oscillator T D ψ = −ψ ′′ + x 2 ψ + q(x)ψ, ψ(0) = 0 in L 2 (R +), where q ∈ H + = {q ′ , xq ∈ L 2 (R +)} is a real-valued potential. We prove that the mapping q → spectral data = {eigenvalues of T D } ⊕ {norming constants} is one-to-one and onto. The complete characterization of the set of spectral data which corresponds to q ∈ H + is given. Moreover, we solve the similar inverse problem for the family of boundary conditions ψ ′ (0) = bψ(0), b ∈ R.
On the Spectrum of the Laplacian on a Strip with Various Boundary Conditions
Far East Journal of Mathematical Sciences (FJMS), 2017
In this paper, the spectrum of the Laplace operator on a strip with constant width subject to four different boundary conditions is investigated. In all the four situations, we prove that its spectrum starts from the first eigenvalue of the one-dimensional Laplacian considered along the width of the strip. Unlike the other cases, we demonstrate that in the case of Robin boundary conditions, the negative part of the spectrum is not necessarily empty and establish sufficient conditions for this to happen.
