Extensive Reading: A Pilot Project to Change Students’ Perception on Reading

This study aimed to investigate the effects of an Extensive Reading course on English Education Study Program students in a university in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia. Extensive Reading was set as a compulsory subject for the fifth semester. The aim of this course was to create an English-learning environment in which students are highly motivated to read, especially reading English texts. The program learning objectives are to improve the students’ reading fluency, to enable them to read critically, and to change their perception of reading. Two classes participated in this study. Data were collected from weekly reading logs, students’ book reports, and student questionnaires. The reading material was taken from students’ preferences since they were given the chance to choose some books provided by the librarians. Developing Students' Reading Ability Using Extensive Reading

This study intends to find out the influent of students’ reading ability through extensive reading and to find out the result of using various text in reading activities. This research using classroom action research. Consists of two cycles. Technique collecting data used in this research is a mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative). The technique of analyzing data used is descriptive analysis. The result of this research showed the development of students reading ability through extensive reading. Use two types of extensive reading, i.e., skimming and superficial. By using three-technique of extensive reading that is skipping, skimming and scanning. Extensive reading conducted in the first cycle and second cycle. Based on the research result from pre-cycle until post cycle, students’ reading ability was increased 50,4 %.

THE USE OF EXTENSIVE READING IN TEACHING READING

The study investigates benefits of using extensive reading in teaching reading and as well as students' attitudes toward it. A case study design as a part of qualitative research was employed in this study. The data were collected through classroom observation, questionnaire and interview. The participants of this study were a class of second graders in one of the public junior high schools in Bandung. The findings reveal that extensive reading was beneficial in teaching reading. There are five benefits found, those are building students' perspective that reading is a fascinating activity, creating enjoyable learning atmosphere, helping students in developing a wide vocabulary, improving students' reading comprehension, and increasing students' motivation in reading. In addition, most students had positive attitudes toward the use of extensive reading in their reading class. Based on the findings, it is expected to contribute to the teaching of English especially in the use extensive reading technique in teaching reading. However, in order to achieve maximum benefits of the technique, it is suggested that some aspects of the technique should be improved; these include the improvement of teacher's understanding of the principles and concepts of extensive reading, the insight of the importance of giving clear instructions, and the awareness of designing various activities.

Extensive Reading in Improving Reading Motivation: A Students’ Perspective

Students nowadays are accustomed to vast yet short information coming from various digital platforms. This affects their concentration span in a negative way and causes a difficulty in focus, including reading a longer text. This study aims to investigate how extensive reading practice improves students' motivation in reading. Specifically, this study aims to elaborate students' experience in English for General Reading subject, how far the extensive reading practice can increase students' reading efficacy, and what impact the practice gives to students' curiosity on specific topics. The finding is expected to uncover new possible ways, which educators can implement to match varied learning needs by optimizing the effectiveness of the activity. Data of this phenomenology study was taken through observation during the class and online questionnaire as the class evaluation after the class has finished. A number of semi-structured interviews were also conducted to a number of students to gain a deeper understanding of the phenomena. The interviews are transcribed, coded, and analysed using thematic analysis. This study found that extensive reading practice helps students improving their reading motivation in general, through enjoyment on familiar subjects, reading efficacy, as well as engagement on new topics.

The Effectiveness of Intensive Reading Approach

This study aimed to find out the effects of intensive reading approach on pupil's reading comprehension in Tubigan Elementary School in Initao, Division of Misamis Oriental. Specifically, the study sought to describe the profile of the respondents in the study; to determine the performance of the Grade IV pupils in the pretest and posttest conducted to experimental and control group; discuss how the reading comprehension is enhanced through the intensive reading approach; disclose the significance difference between the performance of the Grade IV pupils exposed to intensive reading approach and to those who are in the traditional group; and discuss to what extent does intensive reading approach contribute to Grade IV pupils reading comprehension. This study applied the quasi-experimental research design. Pretest was administrated before the conduct of the study while posttest was given at the end of the study. The difference of the test scores was compared using t-test. The study revealed a significant difference on the performance of the respondents when intensive reading approach was applied considering the difference of the pretest and post-test results. This indicates that the application of intensive reading had a positive influence on the learners reading comprehension because their reading comprehension has actually improved significantly.

The Relationship Between Students’ Reading Motivation and the Success to Comprehend the English Texts

The Effectiveness of Extensive Reading Approach to Improve Students’ Reading Comprehension

This research entitled the effectiveness of extensive reading approach has a purpose to figure out the effectiveness of extensive reading approach to improve students’ reading comprehension. The subject of this research is students of SMK Al-Irsyad Cipanas. The sample of this research consists 20 of the eleventh grade students of AP class. The research uses quantitative research, or more specifically the one group pre-test post-test design as research design. To collect the data, this research applies pre-test and post-test as the instrument. The result of data is obtained by using t-test formula. The objectives of the research are: (1) to conduct learning process in Dokkai (reading) subject through extensive reading ; (2) to find out the increase of students’ JLPT N3 achievements particularly in reading session; (3) to confirm the effectiveness of extensive reading in Dokkai IV subject at STBA Teknokrat Lampung. The result of the research shows that (1) the process of teaching learning process through extensive reading was tailored effectively based on the indicator of the attainment of learning objectives.
