Who writes the story matters: Transgender identity through the lens of citizen journalism
Miss Man? Languaging Gendered Bodies, 2018
The present contribution investigates the discursive representation of transgender people in two citizen journalism platforms, Global Voices and the Digital Journal, setting them against the representation gleaned from British quality and popular newspapers. The aim is to assess whether and to what extent negative stereotypes concerning transgender people that have been previously observed in traditional news media are reproduced, contested or overturned in grassroots journalism. The methodological framework adopted is that of corpus-based discourse analysis, a quantitative and qualitative approach to text analysis aiming to reduce researcher’s bias in the search for meaningful regularities in the discourse under study.

How transgender individuals were represented in UK newspaper from 1994 to 2015
This project reports findings from a content analysis of transgender individuals in a UK national newspaper, The Independent, from 1994 to 2015. It examined how they are represented before and after the Gender Recognition Act 2004 (GRA2004), which does not require medical treatment such as hormone therapy or gender reassignment surgery to obtain a new birth certificate. My findings showed that firstly, those people who want/wanted to change their gendered body are still a subject of great interest under the new label, the umbrella term 'transgender', after the Gender Reassignment Act 2004.

During the last two decades, the United Kingdom has witnessed legislative changes regarding the LGBT community, allowing people of the same gender to marry, and transgender people to obtain legal documents presenting their real name and gender. Additionally, “transsexualism” has been removed from the list of mental illnesses and has been labelled as medical condition instead. With these changes within the British society, the LGBT community has been a frequent topic of discussion in the media. The latter is the reason of this paper, which tries to reveal how a part of this community is represented in the British press, in particular, in a corpus of articles from different newspapers from January 2018 onwards. Bearing this in mind, attention will be paid to whether this representation is biased and what discriminatory viewpoints it endorses. For such a purpose, this Critical Discourse Analysis focuses on the patterns of TRANSITIVITY used by the journalists. Some metaphor analysis is ...
Newspaper Representation of Transgender in Pakistan: A Multi-Modal Analysis
Pakistan journal of gender studies, 2022
The aim of the research was to analyse the media visibility of transgenders. The study was conducted via a multi-modal analysis of photographs of trans-genders published in two leading dailies of Pakistan. The analysis was conducted on two levels according to the meta-functions of the visual design as proposed by Kress & van Leeuwen (1996), which are ideational and interpersonal. On the ideational level, five themes emerged which were categorized as images showing confidence, glamour, deprivation, protest, and harassment. The number of images with the themes of confidence and glamour were significantly more in number in comparison to the themes of deprivation, harassment and protests though were significantly fewer in number although they bear the closest affinity to the everyday lives of the subjects. On the interpersonal level, it is interesting that most of the photographs maintained a direct eye contact between the subject and the viewer and thus create an interpersonal bond. A major anomaly which was observed referred to the absolute exclusion of female to male transgenders or trans-males, which is another case of symbolic annihilation.

Asia Social Issues, 2023
This present study aims to examine the English references in digital media that are commonly used to refer to the group of non-binary people and to explore the aspects of references used to portray their meanings towards LGBT people. The first-100 concordance lines of NOW Corpus were used as a primary data source. In order to analyze the data, two groups of the nodes: favorable terms (transgender and trans) and unfavorable terms (transsexual and tranny) , were searched and analyzed using descriptive percentage, thematic content analysis, and corpus-driven discourse analysis. The findings revealed that the highest frequencies of references commonly used in digital news and magazines to refer to LGBT individuals are transgender and trans, respectively. Besides, two sub-themes were found in the concordance lines in terms of positive meanings: raising equality, showing advocacy and performance, and politics, and policy and sarcastic or negative meanings: showing bias or discrimination, subgroup, abandonment and insecurity, difficulties and oppressions, and derogatory and sexual desire. Some unfavorable terms are still underused in media, but they could reveal some positive meanings in terms of politics and policy. The implementations of the study are that the meanings of some LGBT terms are dynamic and that when used in media, content writers need to be aware of different meanings and contexts of the words.

The Sindh Journal of Education , 2021
This research paper aims to explore transgender blues across Pakistani print media. In Pakistan, Trans-genders are one of the most marginalized groups. Media is considered the fourth pillar of democracy. The main objectives of the study were to find out how much extent print media gives coverage to Transgender Community issues and are they satisfied with their existing rights which they enjoy. The research was conducted by going through the last seven months’ dawn newspaper and semi-structured interviews. Trans-genders are also interviewed regarding the media’s portrayal of their issues and tried to know their perspective and past experiences. Media seemed quite biased working for only its interest like for Television Rating Point (TRP) and business matters and sometime sensitizes issues to get more viewership. The study suggests that there should be more participation of the transgender community in the media industry that can portray issues of their community in media which might solve their problems.
