Networks Versus ICT Use: The Case Of SME From Bahía Blanca, Buenos Aires (Argentina)

JISTEM Journal of Information Systems and Technology Management, 2011

Cooperative networks are main tools to improve the competitiveness of Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SME). This study contributes to extend the literature review about the factors that foster firms' cooperative conduct. Apart from that, the paper examines through a LOGIT model, the firm's characteristics, especially ICT (information and communication technologies) use, and the environment's and partners' characteristics that influence the probability of building alliances with other firms from the same economic activity. In particular, we find that ICT use reduces the probability of networking.

Knowledge and Information : The Diffusion of ICT in the Argentinean Manufacturing Industry 1

2003

The objective of this article is to contribute to the discussion about information and knowledge in the economy and society of Latin America focusing on the use and the diffusion of information and communication technologies (ICT) in the Argentinean manufacturing industry. The article relates the use and diffusion of ICT to the performance of the firms (their capacity to innovate, to organize creatively and to compete). The paper has three central aims: (i) to present an empirical map of the use and the diffusion of these technologies in the manufacturing industry, (ii) to link that diffusion with improvements of the endogenous capacities of the firms and (iii) to make a contribution to the theoretical discussion about the links between the information and the knowledge economies. The central argument of the paper is that the incorporation and use of these technologies should be analyzed not in isolation but rather in the context of the capacities previously reached by the firms. Th...

Analysis of factors that influence the ICT adoption by SMEs in Colombia

Intangible Capital, 2016

The objective of this article is to analyze the factors that influence the adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) by SMEs in Colombia. Design/methodology: To prove empirically these hypotheses, we administered a questionnaire to a sample of 474 SMEs in Colombia regarding the adoption of ICT and independent variables identified in the literature. Then, we conducted a series of multiple regression models using the data we obtained. Findings: We developed a model that identifies a positive relation between new business opportunities that ICT offer and their adoption level. Likewise, this research identified that a lack of confidence in ICT's security and privacy, a perception of ICT cost-benefit unbalance have a negative impact on the implementation of these technologies. Research limitations/implications: This study has limitations that are inherent to crosssectional research. These restrict the possibility of conducting dynamic analysis between independent and dependent variables. Likewise, the generalization of results is circumscribed to a geographical context and the type of enterprises surveyed.-666-Versión en español Intangible Capital-http://dx.doi.org/10.3926/ic.726 Practical implications: The results of this research provide valuable contributions to decisionmaking by SMEs' directors and to public policies that foster the implementation of ICT in SMEs based on an analysis of benefits and barriers found in this study. Originality/value: In view of a lack of empirical work that analyzes the implementation of technology in enterprises in emerging countries, this study provides a valuable contribution to the creation of knowledge when attempting to explain the implementation of ICT using a representative sample of SMEs in Colombia identifying the quantitative form of the impact of the benefits and barriers of these technologies.

An Empirical Study of Small and Mediumsized Enterprise Information Communication Technologies (Icts)

The Global Journal of Business Research, 2010

The purpose of this study is to gather information about the use of ICTs among SMEs by firm size and industry sector and to determine the factors, which are related to the development created by the effective and efficient use of ICTs. In order to study the wide range of ICTs, they are separated in five main categories (Information systems, Enterprise systems, Electronic Business & Commerce, Telecommunications networks and Identification, Data Capture & Telemetric Technologies). The empirical analysis is based on a joint methodology of fully structured questionnaires and personal interviews in 54 Greek SMEs at four different industrial Sectors (Other Services, Manufacturing, Trade and Hotels).

THE USE OF ICTs AND ITS RELATION WITH THE COMPETITIVENESS OF MEXICAN SMEs

This empirical study was aimed to analyze the relationship between the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and the competitiveness of manufacturing Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) in the state of Aguascalientes, Mexico, using size and age of the company as control variables. The scales in which the use of ICT and competitiveness were measured, were subjected to a first Order confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), through the Method of Maximum Likelihood, for which they have reliability and convergent and discriminant validity. When the survey was applied to managers or owners of 200 manufacturing SMEs, the results obtained through linear regression analysis by Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) under the stepwise method, allowed to infer that ICTs have a positive and highly significant relationship with the competitiveness of these types of businesses, finding no evidence that the size or age of these types of businesses influence over the impact on the competitiveness...

Classification of SMEs According to Their ICT Implementation

International Journal of Technology, 2022

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are firms that have a wide impact on the country’s economy in Colombia and contribute 28% of GDP, so it is essential to achieve the competitiveness of these organizations. The government has promoted plans to adopt information and communications technologies (ICT) at SMEs to increase their productivity and competitiveness. SMEs are organizations that lag behind in technology adoption. Several investigations have been carried out to characterize them, but no questions have been raised regarding the different types of SMEs that can be found according to their ICT implementation. This research aimed to determine the current usability and perception in the implementation of ICT and subsequently classify organizations based on these two factors. The results describe five types of SMEs: those that experience, those that have been negligent, those that lag behind, those that hesitate, and those that improvise. The data were collected in 2019, reflecting the state of SMEs before the lockdown due to the SARS-CoV-2 virus outbreak.

A knowledge management-based conceptual model to improve the level of utilization of ICTs in Mexican SMEs

The current commercial context for the Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is an ever-changing environment that is strongly influenced by the information and communication technologies (ICTs). This has led enterprises to implement these technologies as supportive tools for their business processes. Nevertheless, a vast number of SMEs have not obtained favorable results in implementing ICTs, since the lack of knowledge about the potential and application of these technologies has made this technological implementation activity prevail as an action oriented to the simple acquisition of equipment and informatic systems with a short-term vision without considering a business strategy. The aim of this paper is to perform a literature review that shows evidence of the low utilization of ICTs in SMEs, particularly in the Mexican environment, which leads to proposing a different approach where enterprises consider Knowledge Management (KM) in the implementation of the informatic technology, leading to a conceptual model to ensure human, organizational and relational capital provide the proper capabilities to complement a strategy that implies carrying out a correct acquisition and application of knowledge that contributes to improving the utilization of ICTs in the business processes.
