Prevalence, Affecting Factors, and Impact of Urinary Incontinence on Quality of Life

Journal of Education and Research in Nursing, 2023

Background: Urinary incontinence is an important problem that is frequently seen in women and affects women's health physically, psychologically, and socially and reduces women's quality of life. Aim: This study was carried out to determine the incidence of urinary incontinence in women, its affecting factors, and its effect on quality of life. Methods: This study was conducted descriptively and cross-sectionally in the gynecology polyclinic of a university hospital in Izmir. The sample of the study consisted of 304 volunteer women living with urinary incontinence. The data were collected with urinary incontinence form, individual description form, and urinary incontinence quality of life scale. The number and percentage distributions, means, standard deviation, t-test, and one-way analysis of variance were used to analyze the data. Results: The mean age of the women was 47.61 ± 11.43, 27% of them had stress, 35.2% of urgency, and 37.8% of mixed urinary incontinence. The majority of women experience urinary incontinence 1-2 times a day (42.4%) and for 1-2 years (33.2%). The mean total score of women urinary incontinence quality of life scale was 79.57 ± 15.05 and the mean of the total scores obtained from the subscales was as follows: behavioral restriction was 27.03 ± 5.86, psychological effect was 36.14 ± 6.50, and restriction of social life was 16.39 ± 3.97. A statistically significant difference was found between urinary incontinence quality of life scale total score means of women and some factors affecting women's urinary incontinence (urgency and mixed urinary incontinence, duration, and frequency of urinary incontinence and such) (P < .05). Conclusion: In the study, it was determined that all types of urinary incontinence are seen in one-third of women, are affected by many factors, and cause deterioration in the quality of life. Nurses should inquire urinary incontinence, which is frequently seen in women, know the factors affecting urinary incontinence, and screen women of all age groups. Thus, nurses will be able to take preventive measures regarding urinary incontinence, determine the factors affecting urinary incontinence, and provide necessary training and counseling by identifying risky women.

Quality of life in women with urinary incontinence

Medicinski glasnik : official publication of the Medical Association of Zenica-Doboj Canton, Bosnia and Herzegovina, 2011

To determine the characteristics of urinary incontinence and its impact on the quality of life in adult women with urinary incontinence who presented to a tertiary care clinic of Vojvodina from September 2008 to May 2009 for treatment We used a prospective case-control study. Cases were defined as patients (47) with urinary incontinence symptoms. Controls (50) were defined as patients without urinary incontinence who presented to a tertiary care gynecology clinic for other reasons. Both, cases and controls, completed two questionnaires recommended for the evaluation of symptoms, The Urinary Distress Inventory, and quality of life impact The Urinary Impact Questionnaire. There was a significant correlation between aging (r=0.614; p<0.01), body mass index (r=0.357; p<0.01) and menopause (r= -0.572; p<0.01) and urinary incontinence. All patients had symptoms of stress incontinence, 61.7% had urge incontinence symptoms, 21.3% voiding difficulty and 85.1% dysuria. Ninety-four pa...

Urinary incontinence and quality of life

Women's Health Medicine, 2005

Traditionally, incontinence has been assessed using symptom scores and objective investigations concentrating on its aetiology, diagnosis and treatment. However, little research has been carried out on the effect of incontinence on the quality of life (QoL) of patients.

Prevalence of Urinary Incontinence and Impact on Quality of Life: Observational Study in a Higher Education Institution Citation

Introduction: Urinary incontinence is more common in women due to anatomical reasons, as well as births and pregnancies, that weaken the perineal muscles, negatively influencing quality of life. Objective: To identify the prevalence of UI among women in an academic environment and, among incontinents, to assess the impact of incontinence on quality of life. Materials and methods: Observational and cross-sectional study with a sample of women linked to a higher education institution. For data collection, an online questionnaire was made available to volunteers via Google Forms to be answered anonymously. Results: 63 women were interviewed with a prevalence of urinary incontinence of 36.5% among respondents. Among incontinents, there was mild incontinence in Arch Physiother Rehabil 2021; 4 (1): 005-011 Archives of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation 6 78.2% and moderate in 21.7% and negative impact on personal relationships in 47.8% of them. Conclusion: The results of the present study showed a prevalence of UI equal to 36.5% among women inserted in an academic environment. This percentage can be considered high due to the average age of the sample and the context in which these women are inserted. Regarding the impact of urinary losses on quality of life, almost half of the incontinent sample reported that the losses interfere with personal life. Despite this, they perceived their health status positively.

Urinary incontinence in both sexes: Prevalence rates and impact on quality of life and sexual life

Neurourology and Urodynamics, 2000

The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of urinary incontinence in both sexes in Austria and to assess its impact on quality of life and sexual function. Voluntary health examinations free of charge are regularly organized in the area of Vienna. From May 1998 to April 1999 we have included in this health examination an incontinence questionnaire containing 37 items, which was largely based on the Bristol female lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) questionnaire. This questionnaire asks in detail for various aspects of urinary incontinence/voiding problems, including the impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life and sexual function. In this questionnaire, urinary incontinence was defined as any involuntary loss of urine within the past 4 weeks. The data of 2,498 participants (1,262 women [f]: mean age: 49.7±13.6 years and 1,236 men [m]: 48.6±13.0 years; age range: 20-96 years) were analyzed. Overall, 26.3% of women and 5.0% of men reported on episodes of urinary incontinence during the past 4 weeks. Prevalence rates increased constantly with age in both sexes: 20-29 years: 4.1% (f), 1.7% (m); 30-39 years: 10.8% (f), 2.7% (m); 40-49 years: 22.9% (f); 3.9% (m); 50-59 years: 34.9% (f), 3.7% (m); 60-69 years: 36.9% (f), 7.6% (m); 70 years or older: 36.0%% (f), 11.5% (m). Overall, 65.7% of women and 58.3% of men stated that quality of life was affected by their incontinence status. A moderate or severe impairment was reported by 18.3% of women and 16.6% of men. Impairment of quality of life was related as statistically significant (P < 0.05) to frequency and degree of incontinence (irrespective of the type of incontinence), the impact on sexual function and need for pads or other incontinence devices. Patient gender, age, and the duration of incontinence had no effect (P > 0.05) on quality of life. An impairment of sexual life by urinary incontinence was stated by 25.1% of women and 30.5% of women, respectively. Although only 65.7% of women and 58.3% men with urinary incontinence reported on an impairment of quality of life, these data underline the high prevalence and socioeconomic implications of this disorder. The impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life is significantly higher than on sexual function.

Selected determinants of quality of life in women with urinary incontinence

Menopausal Review, 2014

Urinary incontinence (UI) is one of the most common diseases in women. It involves uncontrolled leaking of urine through the urethra. UI incidence depends on age and in certain age groups it can affect up to 60% of the female population. The symptoms can be persistent and due to their embarrassing nature they can lead to significant deterioration of quality of life and psychological functioning. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the quality of life and selected aspects of functioning. Seventy female outpatients of a public clinic in Nałęczów, Poland, were examined, and the following methods were

The Assessment of Quality of Life and Biopsychosocial Implications in the Diagnosis of Women’s Urinary Incontinence

Revista De Cercetare Si Interventie Sociala, 2015

Urinary incontinence is a major cause of morbidity and invalidism which influences the quality of life and affects women of all ages. Therefore, this represents a social or hygiene problem and can be objectively demonstrated. In this context, urinary incontinence can be considered a public health problem, as it causes a significant decrease in the quality of life and affects the patient’s life socially, psychologically, occupationally, physically and sexually. The study addressed these women’s quality of life, so that the result of the analysis would be an optimal collaboration with the patients in order to find the best possible diagnosis and treatment methods. As it is not a life-threatening condition, but rather a personal and social hygiene problem, the necessity of a treatment was perceived differently depending not only on the level of education, but on the degree of social and professional integration, too.

Assessing the impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life: systematic review of instruments in Portuguese

Manual Therapy, Posturology & Rehabilitation Journal, 2014

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) can have a large impact on quality of life (QOL), which can harm social, economic, psychological and sexual aspects. Instruments are used to assess such damages. As it comes to subjective information, questionnaires are suitable tools to measure these variables. Objective: To identify the instruments used to assess the impact of urinary incontinence on quality of life and evaluate them regarding the psychometric properties. Method: A search for articles that used specific questionnaires to assess the impact of urinary incontinence on QOL was conducted using the following descriptors: urinary incontinence, questionnaire, quality of life, in English, Portuguese and Spanish in the following databases: PubMed, SciELO and Scopus, then the validation of questionnaires in Portuguese (Brazil) to classify them as to the process of cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric properties. Results: Seven questionnaires were found: International Consultation...
