PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCE OF ENGLISH TEACHERS IN INDONESIA: A PROFILE OF EXEMPLARY TEACHERS

This study was conducted to find out the profile of exemplary English teachers at secondary schools. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires. The study was conducted in four towns, covering exemplary teachers in one senior high school and three junior high schools. The subjects were exemplary in terms of their active participation in the Teachers' Forum (MGMP), and their roles in the professional development of both themselves and their colleagues. This study was done mainly to find out (1) the professional competences of the exemplary teachers in each town and (2) how they achieve the competences. The collected data were analyzed qualitatively by the usual process of sorting, coding, and analyzing. The findings reveal that the subjects in three of the four towns have all the four competences (subject matter, pedagogical, social and personal competences), with the personal competence being the most influential in shaping them as professional and exemplary teachers. From the findings a profile of the professional competences of the exemplary English teachers at secondary schools is developed. Keywords: professional competence, exemplary teacher, profile.

Professional and pedagogic competences are the basic aspects for effective teaching and learning to take place in classrooms. They are dealing with the quality of teaching-learning process. However, the average score of UKG (Teacher Competence Test) in Indonesia did not achieve standard expected target. The Analysis of Certified English Teacher’s Performance

Teachers nowadays are called professional educators. They must have at least a bachelor's degree in specific major. These teachers have the right to get recognition from the government as a decent and able to be certified through series of tests.This study aims todescribe the performance of educated certified English teachers in terms of the four types of teacher competencies. This study uses a descriptive qualitative approach. The sample is certified English teacher from SMKN 1 Cinangka Serang Regency. The sample is chosen purposively. The instruments used were questionnaires, interviews and documentation. The result showed that English teacher at SMKN 1 Cinagka Kabupaten Serang included in pedagogic competence 81%, personality competence 82%, social competence 83% and professional competence 81%. The mastery of the four competencies will produce good teaching performance as well. To conclude, the teacher in SMKN 1 Cinangka Serang Regency is proficient and has showed the teacher's performance in each competency in excellent way.

Answering the quality of education is to see the teacher performance problems.Etnografi method was describing of the teacher characteristic and phenomenon of pedagogical competence and profesional competence through qualitative approach toward group of teacher with qualitative design, to identification group of teacher. The data stated by Education Deparment of Banjarmasin. The participants were 99 teachers; 24 male and 75 female teachers. The data took by observation, interview and document. The resulted; the teacher competency test quality; Part time teachers 28.28%, rank and class <IV / a 54 545%, Chronological age <53 years of 67.67%, not certified 33.33%, Education <S-1 20:20%, private school 24.24%, Non S-1 guidance and counseling 24.24% , graduates under 2005 59.59%, Pedagogic value <60 97.97%, professional value <65 55 545%.From deep interview; the teacher lack of reading books and browsing, they also lack of independence to enhance their competence, out of date the technology, over 150 student teacher ratio, guidance and counseling are considered public, cite the extra hours for subjects, the teaching profession is no longer their eagerself.

The existence of development in the education field requires teachers to be able to act more than just a teacher who knows how to teach. To become an advanced teacher, a teacher should have good professional competence and pedagogical competence. The Competence of Primary School English Teachers in Indonesia

The problem of this research is 'what is the level of professional and pedagogic competence of English primary school teachers?'. This paper highlights the findings of a study which was undertaken at primary schools in Indonesia. The aims of the study were to explore the primary school English teachers' competence about their professional and pedagogic competency. Test and open question were employed to obtain the data of the level of professional and pedagogic competencies. The recommendations for the improvement of professional and pedagogic competencies of primary school teachers of English were also provided.

Teachers Pedagogical and Professional Competences in CLIL-Based Primary Schools in Indonesian Context

To face the Millennium Development Goals, schools are supposed to equip the students to have proper English skills to help them interact in AEC. Yet, empirical evidence revealed that the education in Indonesia ranks 64 out of 120 countries (EDI, 2012). For this, Universitas Negeri Malang as one of the teacher training institutions in Indonesia takes the responsibility in improving the teachers’ quality. Hence, this research investigated the teachers’ pedagogical and professional competences in teaching English, Math, and Science. There are many challenges in implementing the quality of education in Indonesia. To face the challenge, teachers' competence is very needed. That is why, competence must be possessed by every teacher especially English teacher.
