Plagiarism amongst research students in the University of Moratuwa (UoM) in Sri Lanka

Plagiarism lias becomc a major issue in learned societies with the advent of sophisticated software and information via digital media, though the scholars should practice qualities of honesty, ethics and professionalism. Under this circumstance, it is obligated to explore the concerns on plagiarism in the University' of Moratuwa (UoM) as information professionals. Therefore, this research focuses on investigating the state of affairs about plagiarism of the research students in die UoM. The survey research strategy was adapted and a structured questionnaire was distributed among 181 stratified random sample of final year students and the postgraduate students in the UoM. Results reveal that even though most of research students suppose that they are knowledgeable about plagiarism, they do not have a complete knowledge of plagiarism. Further the eight significant factors affecting plagiarism were extracted using the principal component analysis. The key factor to lead plagiarism was the lack of awareness about plagiarism. Therefore, the recommendations were composed to make research students aware of plagiarism via specific programs.

With the development of the Internet and the abundance of sources available to students, plagiarism has become more prevalent and widespread in the academic community. There are now a number of special software recognition programmes which can detect academic misconduct and plagiarism. Investigating Plagiarism: The Form and the Motivation in Performing Plagiarism in High Education
The rapid development of information technology, especially the Internet is pointed out to be factor driving the student to practice plagiarism. Prevention efforts continue to be made both from government policies and stakeholder by creating software anti-plagiarism. However, in the reality the practice of plagiarism remains common and relatively more widespread. This practice continues to be varied, so that we need to update the information and findings through investigations plagiarism practices in student assignments. The method used was a mixed-method approach or mix of quantitative and qualitative approaches. A quantitative approach was done by using software turnitin.com to scan for plagiarism indication of the level of student assignment in common. To study the behavior of plagiarism, the interview process was also done informally to students who commit high plagiarism. The results showed that the pattern of students' plagiarism consists of five forms: sham paraphrasing, illicit paraphrasing, other plagiarism, copying verbatim and purloining. Illicit paraphrasing practices are a form of copy-paste literature review and did not pay attention to the bibliography. Besides, the practice of plagiarism is closely associated with low academic writing knowledge. Therefore, the practice of plagiarism should not only be viewed from the perspective of the academic violations, but also from the other perspectives.
Plagiarism in higher education environment: causes and solutions

In the academic arena, plagiarism is on the rise. As a consequence, Higher Learning Institutions are putting in place severe punitive measures. Most of these measures are more reactive than preventive because they focus on plagiarism detection and the kinds of punishments to administer to students who plagiarize. In fact, these measures fail to address particular or primary reasons for plagiarism in students’ works. This may be one of the reasons why such measures have done little to reduce the incidents of plagiarism. Using a desktop research pathway, this paper discusses the concept and practices of plagiarism and raises a number of issues which need to be considered in framing measures to address it. Among other workable strategies proposed in this paper include the (i) strengthening of reading and academic writing skills, (ii) institutionalization and dissemination of anti-plagiarism policy and (iii) using technology in detecting plagiarism among students’ work. Plagiarism is a massive issue in today’s academic field due to the information overflow. It can be noticeable at every level of the academic career. Many academicians take shortcuts when working, which leads them to use plagiarism because they are unaware of plagiarism, do not want to break the copy-and-paste culture or are pressed for time. Plagiarism is when someone takes someone else's work and passes them off as their own. Plagiarism is strongly linked to forgery and piracy, both of which are illegal under copyright laws. This is a significant problem for university students and research scientists; everyone must be extremely cautious with their academic work to solve it. This study shows the awareness of plagiarism among the students of two renowned universities in Delhi. It also shows the reason behind the adoption of plagiarism. A quantitative survey was conducted in Delhi with a sample of 100 students from Delhi University (DU) and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The first main finding of the report is that the reasons for plagiarism are a lack of willingness to study and a copy-paste culture. Second, most students learn about plagiarism through lecturers or other sources like web sources. Nowadays, plagiarism has become a punishable offence, so we need to be extra careful about plagiarism.
Knowledge and Perception Regarding Plagiarism among Students of Khulna University

ABSTRACT Plagiarism is realized as a rising global problem in higher education around the world. This study was conducted to explore the university students’ knowledge and perception towards plagiarism. Qualitative research method was applied to conduct the study. This study was exploratory in nature and students of Khulna University from various disciplines were interviewed through in-depth interview which was a qualitative research tool. Students who had thesis course before and doing thesis currently during the study, were selected as a respondents so that the researcher could acquire better result from the study and the respondents’ number was 30. An Interview schedule was made to collect the data from the respondents. Collected data were processed through thematic analytical tool. The themes were generated through reading of transcripts which were written in a note khata by hearing the audio of the respondents. The themes were presented using MS word. In the themes, students of Khulna University told some causes of doing plagiarism in academic writing by the students such as disinterest in thesis course, laziness, excessive page limitation compelled by the teachers, lack of knowledge, lack of checking plagiarism and weakness of English writing etc. Students gave some opinion to reduce plagiarism among the students which were: no page limitation in academic assignment, giving penalty, making specific course on plagiarism, workshop on plagiarism, using plagiarism checker etc. Key Words: Plagiarism, University Students, Khulna University, Perception, Knowledge
Perception and Attitudes toward Plagiarism by A Deemed University Research Scholars Chennai

This study looked into how students saw plagiarism, where they found information about it, how they felt about it, why they committed plagiarism, and whether they knew what the repercussions were. A quantitative strategy was applied. A survey was used to collect data from 224 students from Hindustan university , who were chosen using the stratified sampling technique. The questionnaire served as the primary tool for gathering data, which were then descriptively analyzed. The results demonstrated that everyone was aware of plagiarism and that their primary information source was lecturers. Although most students had a rudimentary understanding of what plagiarism is, they have expanded its definition to include other types of academic dishonesty. They plagiarized despite thinking they had control over the practice. Plagiarism was motivated by a number of factors, including pressure to succeed, insufficient academic writing abilities, laziness, a lack of time management skills, a poor comprehension of plagiarism, and ease of downloading other people's work from the Internet. Students' knowledge and comprehension of the subject matter are enhanced and plagiarism and its repercussions are brought to light by the study. It also advances information and gives scholars and students studying this field of study another resource to consult.

The extent of plagiarism has been rising globally and many universities are trying hard to eradicate this practice. The challenge is being exacerbated by the availability of information due to technological advancements such as the Internet. Researchers and students become exposed to too much information but sometimes disregard the copyright and intellectual issues surrounding use of such. This exposure has contributed to the rise in plagiarism. Students at universities have had difficulties in understanding plagiarism and avoiding it. The study is conducted on plagiarism awareness, perception, and attitude of research scholars in Farook College. There are 101 research scholars and the whole population is selected for the study. A questionnaire tool was used for data collection. The present study describes various aspects of plagiarism such as awareness of plagiarism, perception of plagiarism, use of plagiarism detection software, satisfaction with plagiarism detection software, use of citation styles, and awareness of punishments for plagiarism.
