DOI: 10.25136/2409-868X.2020.2.32226 The object of the research is the Russian Navy under the reign of Peter I and Anna Ioannovna, when there was an aggravation of the foreign policy situation in the Azov and Black Sea region. The subject of the research is the history of the restoration and development of military shipbuilding on the Don River in 1721-1735. The author examines in detail on the published and archival materials the process of the formation of the Don Flotilla, which included 9 large and 6 small prams, 15 galleys, 30 small vessels. The novelty of this research is the reconstruction of shipbuilding work on the Don River in 1721-1735. The construction process in 1721-1724, their re-conservation in 1733 and the subsequent completion of the ships of the Don Flotilla before the start of the Russian-Turkish war of 1735-1739 are shown in detail. The shipbuilding process itself is also analyzed, the main results of which are that the flotilla was not ready for the start of large-scale hostilities against the Ottoman Empire.

DOI: 10.18384/2310-676X-2019-2-114-126 The paper is devoted to the actions of the Don Flotilla built in 1723–1724 and 1733–1735, which played a crucial role during the siege of Azov in 1736. Despite a rather extensive historiography of the Russian-Turkish (Austro-Russian-Turkish) war, this issue has been studied poorly and in isolation from the Russian military-historical context. Based on a large number of Russian and Turkish sources, the author reconstructs and analyzes key stages in the use of the Russian navy against the Turkish garrison and ships, which were sent from Istanbul to help the fortress. Using sources that have not been previously considered in historiography, the author clarifies a number of facts and proposes their new interpretation. A comparative analysis of the actions of the navy during the siege of Azov in 1696 and 1736 is conducted, which allows new trends in the development of Russian military art of naval warfare to be determined.

Военно-морской флот во время русско-турецкой войны 1735-1739 гг.: историографический аспект // Клио. 2019. № 3 (147). С. 37-43. The paper discusses the Russian and foreign historiography of the Russian-Turkish war of 1735-1739 and the naval studies in it, which plague the history of the Don and Dnieper flotillas. The analysis of the published works demonstrates the beginning of interest in this military conflict at the end of the 18th century by foreign historians, and then Russian. The historiographic base of the war of 1735-1739 was formed at the end of XIX - beginning of XX centuries. The historians of the Navy reproduced the existing model of research and concentrated on the publication of sources at this time. In Soviet times, the study of the war almost stopped. The naval context of the war has ceased to be in the field of view of Soviet historical science. New impetus to the development of historiography is identified at the beginning of the XXI century. Russian and foreign historians publish many works and significantly expand the list of problems. There is a widespread presence of the naval theme, emphasizing the fact that most researchers limit themselves to describing the history of the construction of flotillas without a comprehensive analysis of their shipbuilding programs, staff and combat use. In addition, many modern military historians do not use the experience of previous historiography and base their work on a lapidary list of sources. The analysis of the historiography of the Russian-Turkish war of 1735-1739 demonstrates that Russian and foreign researchers ignore each other’s sources and literature.

The paper is enlightened to the first shipbuilding program of the Don Flotilla, which was built in Tavrov in 1723–1724 for military action against the Ottoman Empire. It was taken part in the Russo-Turkish War (Russo-Austro-Ottoman) of 1735–1739. The starting point in the history of the flotilla is revealed Through unpublished archival materials. It is determined the reasons for its creation and the role in the foreign policy of the Russian Empire in 1720s. The ship’s composition of the naval formation is analyzed, including large and small prams, half-galleys and boats. Based on the large number of sources, hypotheses are advanced about the origin of the constructed ships, which makes it possible to establish the strategic and tactical tasks of the flotilla in the alleged military conflict. Particular attention is paid to the construction features of each type of ship.
