The taxonomy and geographic distribution of the freshwater crabs of the family Pseudothelphusidae Ortmann, 1893, of Costa Rica, Central America, particularly of the genus Ptychophallus Smalley, 1964, are revised. Historical materials deposited in major collections of several institutions were examined, as well as valuable collections in the Zoological Museum of the University of Costa Rica that include abundant specimens obtained recently (2007-2010) in the southern region of the country. The pseudothelphusids of Costa Rica consists of 15 currently valid species belonging to Achlidon Smalley, 1964 (two species), Allacanthos Smalley, 1964 (two species), Potamocarcinus H. Milne Edwards, 1853 (three species), and Ptychophallus (eight species). Two species seem to be restricted to the Atlantic drainage, while seven are known only from the Pacific drainage; six species occur in both drainages. A new species of the genus Phallangothelphusa Pretzmann, 1965 is described, increasing the number of species in the genus to three: P. dispar (Zimmer, 1912), P. magdalenensis Campos, 1998, and P. juansei, new species. The new species is distinguished from its congeners primarily by the morphology of the first male gonopod, specifically the different shape of the distal and proximal projections of the mesial process; lateral process with distal bulge covered with rows of conspicuous spinules, and subtriangular outline of the apex. Phallangothelphusa is endemic to Colombia and its distribution comprises the upper and middle Magdalena valley region, including adjacent slopes of the eastern and central Andes, at elevations ranging from 300 to 1500 m. An updated key for the identification of the species is presented.

A new species of freshwater crab of the family Pseudothelphusidae from Zongolica, Veracruz, Mexico, is described. Only one previous report exists of a pseudothelphusid crab from the Zongolica region in central Veracruz, but that one belongs to a different tribe. The new species is placed in the genus Pseudothelphusa due to the evident torsion of the male gonopod and to the presence of the typical reniform caudo-marginal projection of Pseudothelphusa. The new species can be distinguished from its congeners by a gonopod with a caudo-marginal projection with a single large lobe, which extends proximally to reach beyond the middle of the gonopod's principal axis, and a conical prominence with terminal pore setae on the distal crest of the caudo-lateral surface. The new species represents the 26 th species of the genus with affinities with species from the Pacific versant of Mexico.

Tv^o new species of Pseudothelphusidae are described from Colombia. Strengeriana chaparralensis, n.sp. adds a fifth species to a primitive group of crabs from the Central Cordillera; its gonopod resembles that of its nearest geographic relative, S. tolimensis Rodriguez and Diaz, 1981. Chaceus davidi, n.sp. also belongs to a small genus of primitive crabs from the Sierra de Santa Marta; the gonopod has characters of both Chaceus and Hypolobocera. A geographical record is given for Hypolobocera martelatani Pretzmann, 1965, which was originally described from an unknown locality in "Columbia.

We describe two new species of Neostrengeria Pretzmann, 1965, N. bataensis, from Santa María, Boyacá Department, and N. celioi, from Aguazul, Casanare Department, on the eastern slope of the Eastern Andes. With the addition of the new species, the number of species in the genus rises to 23. These new species are distinguished from their congeners primarily by the morphology of the first male gonopod, particularly by the shape of the lateral and accessory lobes, outline of apex, mesocaudal projection and mesial lobe. The genus Neostrengeria is endemic to Colombia and is distributed in both slopes and the high plain of the Eastern Cordillera, at elevations ranging from 470 to 3000 m. We present a key for the identification of the species based essencially on the morphology of the first male gonopod and pereopods.
