Lack of appropriate equivalences for terms or technical words is the result of ineffective translation guidelines adopted in the translation process. This study provides a comparative analysis of the characteristics of Persian medical terms, using the universal naming guidelines and local naming principles in Persian. The aim of the study is to determine the similarities and differences of the compatible and incompatible terms (Persian equivalents) with respect to the applied translation procedures and the employed word formation processes. The descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis were employed to analyse the collected data which consisted of a population of 339 English medical terms and their pairs in Persian. The research was based on two theoretical frameworks, namely Sager's naming criteria and word designation principles by the Persian Language and Literature Academy to investigate the effective translation procedures and word formation parameters for the transla...

Medical language, as many technical languages, is rich with morphologically complex words. The increasing number of foreign words and specific terms incorporated into the native language are due to the ongoing development of technology and science. Many problems appear in medical translation when the Persian translators try to employ non-Persian or imported words in medical texts, in which multiple equivalents may be created for one particular word based on the individual preferences of authors and translators in the target language. According to this study, following the analysis of the data based on the applied translation procedures and word formation processes, the compatibility of the resulted characteristics has been investigated based on Sager's naming criteria and it is concluded that the main problem is due to the translation procedures of borrowing and substitution.
Persian Medical Terms, Naming and Morphosemantic Factors: A Discussion in Medical Translation
2015
The language of medicine with its morphologically complex words will provide considerable and interesting issues that can be studied by both linguists and translators. Lot of surveys were done previously to analyze the language of these most ancient medical records, but the study on the development of Persian medical terminology is limited in number. This paper provides a brief terminological description of the selected English medical terms and their equivalents in the Persian language. The data consisting of 339 medical terms chosen under the “Connective Tissue and Musculoskeletal System” of the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) and their equivalents in the Persian language are selected for this study. The target terms are compared and analyzed based on the secondary term formation processes, with regardnto morphosemantic factors. The quantitative and qualitative analyses of the data indicate that various morphosemantic factor...
Trends in Persian medicinal terminology a progressing field of interdisciplinary research
Conceptualization for new findings is the main aim of science and technology development. Sometimes new concepts are pathfinders for science and starting fundamental revolutions in science. An important area in scientology or scientific studies is the concept and term field, so terminology and its effect on science and technology is one of the most important subjects in the last decade. Standardization in scientific terms (scientific term selection) is one of the strongest terminology methods. These methods break down the terms to their meaningful parts or use prevalent terms, which are common among people or use eponyms and abbreviation processes, and finds the appropriate equivalent for them. The word parts are prefixes, suffixes and stems. In medical sciences, terms are mostly originated from Latin stems, so this method could be extremely efficient in these fields. The terminology committee of Persian Academy studied the highly frequent prefixes, suffixes and stems to help the standardization of terminology in medical sciences. This research introduces methods of term selection, some approved terms and their Persian equivalents. Term selection for medical terms is not an obligatory rule, but is a proposal for meeting the researchers need to strength Persian language as a scientific language.
Multiple Arabic Equivalents to English Medical Terms
International Linguistics Research, 2018
Translation of medical texts poses several challenges to undergraduate student-translators due to multiple Arabic equivalents to English medical terms. For medical terms such as clinical, intensive care, polyp, and osteoporosis several Arabic equivalents exist. A sample of English medical terms with multiple Arabic equivalents was collected from several English-Arabic medical dictionaries to find out the types of multiple Arabic equivalents given, the shortcomings of Arabic equivalents, and the difficulties that students have with multiple Arabic equivalents. Two lists of categories with definitions and examples were developed and used in classifying and evaluating the equivalents. In addition, students answered an Arabic medical terminology test and responded to a questionnaire-survey to find out their difficulties. Results of the analysis and evaluation of the Arabic equivalents, medical terminology test, and responses to the questionnaire-survey are reported in detail. Recommenda...

Translation on Medical Terms into Indonesian
IJASS JOURNAL, 2022
This research reveals the linguistics phenomenon especially translation. Translation in this research is focused on medical and the use of medical technical terms. The problems were formulated into translation prosedur on medical terms into Indonesian. The theories of this research were translation theory namely translation procedure by Vinay dan Darbelnet (in Venuti, 2000), theory of semantics (semantic features) by Nida& Taber (1975). Research related to medical linguistics so far is still relatively small and the object of research so far is still in books or library research. This research reveals translations in health terms. The results of this study are the procedures for translating health terms that are reformulated in accordance with research needs. Therefore, research on the translation of health terms necessary.
Language Planning and Terminology Management: Case Study Medical Terminology in Jordan http://www.sciencepublishinggroup.com/book/B-978-1-940366-09-8 Dr Hussein Abdo M. Rababah Al- Imam Muhammad Ibn Saud Islamic University- KSA Languages and Translation College Abstract Language Planning and Terminology Management: Case Study, Medical Terminology in Jordan Language planning and medical terminology management in Jordan is investigated as a case study, both qualitatively and quantitatively, from the perspective of general language planning and terminology management theories and principles. English is the communicative and professional medical language in Jordan. Medical staff often switch from English to Arabic and vice versa. Arabic medical terminology, which is important for patient and medical staff communication, is not properly standardized. There is more than one Arabic medical equivalent for the same medical concept, which causes ambiguity and confusion to language users. The assumption of this study is that Arabic medical terms are available, but they are not well disseminated. Code switching, translation, bilingualism, euphemism, dysphemism, synonymy, term formation, as linguistic notions, are discussed in their relation to language planning and terminology management. The methodology of this research includes attitudinal questionnaires for investigating medical language users’ opinions and attitudes towards terminology management, a translation form for evaluating the mechanisms for spreading Arabic medical terminology, a survey of medical dictionaries for the availability of Arabic medical terminology, and interviews with the people responsible for language planning and terminology management. The expected benefits of having a standardized and disseminated Arabic medical terminology include the enhancement of communication between health care providers and users, the facilitation of the translation process, the transfer of medical knowledge to Jordan, an increase in the health awareness of people, and improving the education of medical related careers. The research concludes that there is no organized strategy for innovating and disseminating medical terminology in Jordan. The subjects are generally in favour of keeping English as the medical language as well as having a standardised and disseminated Arabic medical terminology. A practical strategy is proposed, and the terminology committee is recommended to appoint a Medical Terminology Monitor and a Liaison Person.
Information transfer occurs between societies for various reasons, mostly political and social relations such as migration, war and trade. Instead of giving a name to the innovations learned during this transfer, sometimes the source language's words are borrowed in the target language. Language is one of the most critical factors influenced by Turk-Arab relations, which have a history of nearly fourteen centuries. During this period, word translations occurred in many fields, from Turkish to Arabic and from Arabic to Turkish. One of these fields is medicine, where the Arabic language has been dominant for a long time in Islamic civilization. It is seen that many Arabic medical terms are used in Turkish, as they have been influenced by the works and practices of many medical scholars in the Arab world. In this study, medical words that passed from Arabic to Turkish were determined. These words were examined in terms of phonetic events and semantic, and the effect of Arabic on Turkish medical terminology was revealed.
